COMPOUNDS

Endocentric compound is a type of compound in which one


member functions as the head and the other as its modifier,
attributing a property to the head. The relation between the
members of an endocentric compound can be schematized as 'AB
is (a) B'.

EXAMPLES:

1. She stepped forward and pulled the newspaper down with one hand.
2. Eli found my lost textbook.
3. The classroom was clean and tidy.
4. She had her handbag stolen.
5. The owner of my favorite bookstore is retiring and the spot is closing.
6. In the darkroom they found that only half the film had been exposed.
7. He had always hated smalltalk.
8. Ralph built Grover a doghouse with windows and a hinged door.
9. That bookcase wobbles whenever you put anything on it.

Exocentric compound is a compound construction that lacks a


head word: that is, the construction as a whole is not grammatically
and/or semantically equivalent to either of its parts.Contrast
with endocentric compound (a construction that fulfills the same
linguistic function as one of its parts).

EXAMPLES:

1. Put the clothes on the scarecrow.


2. The pickpocket pinched her purse and ran away.
3. White-collar workers now work longer hours.
4. The 21-year-old skinhead sitting to my left began to squirm in his
wooden seat.
5. I find beards a real turn-off.
6. A firefly is a type of beetle.
7. Doctors these days tend to be more open-minded about alternative
medicine.
8. Casson was publicly criticized as a turncoat and a traitor.
9. There are blockheads among the critics too.
10. The Government was dominated by self-important eggheads.

Copulative compounds are compounds with two semantic


heads.Both meanings of the two words are both part of the
resulting meaning of the compounds.

EXAMPLES:

1. All his life it would loom bittersweet in memory.


2. When I lie down calmly pondered when the bed, I only then soberly
realize myself to sleepwalk.
3. Tom is a real playboy.
4. We broadcast the news to the local population every morning.
5. He was a better songwriter than performer.

Appositional compounds are compounds in which both


compounds have the same referent.Appositional
compounds are lexemes that have two (contrary) attributes
that classify the compound.

EXAMPLES;

1. The player-coach is angry.


2. Twenty years ago singer-songwriter John Prine released his first
album.
3. Without preaching, writer-director Tim Robbins presents the
arguments of opponents and proponents of the death penalty.
4. The student-teacher was mad.
5. She had even formed friendships with the cook and the
two maidservants.
6. He used to be a singer-actor.
7. She is a Filipino-American.
8. The black widow spider has red-orange markings on its body.
9. The tumbled surface of the sea looked blue-green, with white horses
as far as the eye could see .
10. In the beginning, says Malone, our ancestors lived as small groups
of hunter-gatherers, enjoying close-knit social bonds and egalitarian
decision-making.

Borrowed Compounds are compounds formed in English


borrowed from Latin and Greek.

EXAMPLES:

1. Attach a recent photograph to your application form.


2. The microscope magnified the object two hundred times.
3. The biologist advanced a new theory of life.
4. This process involves the addition of microorganisms, nutrients and
an electron acceptor into the saturation zone of a contaminated
aquifer.
