VOCABULARY

ACCIDENT.- something bad that happens that is not expected or intended and
that often damages something or injures someone.

 I was hardly able to move my arm after the accident.

ARRIVE.- to reach a place, especially at the end of a journey

 We didn't arrive at our hotel until after midnight.

AMBULANCE.- a special vehicle used to take sick orinjured people to hospital.

 The siren signalled the approach of an ambulance.

BREAK.- to (cause something to) separate suddenly or violently into two or


more pieces, or to (cause something to) stop working by beingdamaged

 Charles is always breaking things.

DROP.- to fall or to allow something to fall

 Amanda dropped her sunglasses in the fountain.

FAINT.- not strong or clear; slight

 My grandfather is getting old and can't hear very well.

PARAMEDIC.- a person who is trained to do medical work, especially in


anemergency, but who is not a doctor or nurse.

 Paramedics go to dangerous places to help people.

Plant(n.).- a living thing that grows in earth, in water, or on other plants, usually
has a stem, leaves, roots, and flowers, and produces seeds.

 This plant grows quickly and provides excellent ground cover.

Put.- to move something or someone into the stated place,position, or direction

 She put her hands over her eyes.

RUN.- (of people and some animals) to move along, faster thanwalking, by
taking quick steps in which each foot is lifted before the
next foot touches the ground.

 I can run a mile in five minutes.

SCREAM.- to cry or say something loudly and usually on a


high note,especially because of strong emotions such as fear, excitement,
oranger.

 They screamed with laughter at her jokes.

SEND.- to cause something to go from one place to


another, especially bypost or email.

 The news report was sent by satellite.

Shout.- to speak with a very loud voice, often as loud as possible, usually
when you want to make yourself heard in noisy situations, or when
the person you are talking to is a long way away or cannot hearvery well.

 He shouted from the garage that he'd be finished in


about half an hour.

STRANGE.- unusual and unexpected, or difficult tounderstand.

 I had a strange feeling that we'd met before.

SUDDENLY.- quickly and unexpectedly

 I suddenly realized what I'd said, but it was too late.

TOUCH.- to put your hand or another partof your body lightly onto and off
something or someone.

 I could feel myself tense up as he touched my neck.

WIN.- to achieve first position and/or get a prize in a competition, election, fight,
etc.

 This is the third medal she's won this season.

WINNER.- someone who wins a game,competition, or election.

 The winner of this match will play Aston Villa in the semifinals.

BACKPACK.- a large bag used to carrythings on your back,


usedespecially by people who go camping or walking.

 Ashley slung her backpack on a chair.

CATCH.- to take hold of something,especially something that is moving through


the air.

 We saw the eagle swoop from the sky to catch its prey.

FLASHLIGHT.- a small light that is held in the handand usually


gets its power from batteries.

 She shone the flashlight into the dark room.

GET DARK.- Term used especially in the Midlands for a situation turning
nasty.

 We remained in the plaza until it began to get dark

GO BACK.- to return

 We can always go back to the original plan if necessary.

GO FOR A WALK.- a rude way of telling someone to go away

 Let’s go for a walk before it gets too hot.

MAKE A FIRE.- Create a flame.

 He explained how to make a fire.

MAP.- a drawing of the earth's surface, or part of


that surface, showing the shape and position of different countries, political
borders, natural features such as riversand mountains,
and artificial features such as roads and buildings

 This map has contours marked at 250-metre intervals.

POCKET KNIFE.- a small knife that folds into a case and is usually carried in
a pocket.

 It was a small, expensive pocketknife with a little shield set into


its bone handle.

PUT UP.- an attempt to trick or deceive someone.


 The hotel looked like a good investment, but it turned out that
the whole thing was a put-up job.

SLEEPING BAG.- a large, thick bag for sleeping in, especially when you
are sleeping outside, for example in a tent.

 Get a sleeping bag that is warm but light in weight.

SMOKE.- the grey, black, or white mixture ofgas and


very small pieces of carbon that isproduced when something burns.

 I heard a loud bang and then saw black smoke.

TENT.- a shelter made of canvas or


asimilar materialand supported bypoles and ropes, that you can foldup
and carry with you.

 We thought we'd insure against rain by putting a tent up


where people could take shelter.
