ethics alone on all eight Saturdays for the last

Friday for the first four months and for the last
two months, I consumed a relatively smaller
amount of alcohol, as I would have to read
ethics the following morning. Sucks.

I always made sure to make time to exercise
even for just 10 minutes, since it helps to
regulate my sleep.

Sleep at least 7-8 hours every night, including
the night of the exams. Prioritize sleep over
studying. Try to get regular exercise also, since
this helps you sleep better and supposedly
improves brainpower and memory.

• I had no day during the week where I would
not study at all. I would just have longer rest
periods before and after
meals. Schedule can be adjusted as needed. If I
felt like I didn’t study as much, I would shorten
my break times the following
day to compensate. I would follow my schedule
more strictly as it got closer to Bar month.
• For my meal periods, I would usually watch
one 20-minute show (Friends, Big Bang
Theory, Modern Family) while eating,
then Facebook/internet afterwards.
• Rest day (2-3 times a week): essentially the
same, but I replaced exercise with longer free
time and a bit of studying
before lunch.
• I took around 3-5 completely study-free
break days during the entire Bar review.

Review Schedule:
• 1st reading: feel free to follow any order
for your first reading; I started with Poli
and Labor first since I didn’t take Labor
Law review (I coupled it with Poli for no

Bar Tips Analysis 2016 Raymond Mercado IVA #Goodluckbatch2016 #NotoCrabs #OBF #maytheforcebewithyou 17
reason). I studied Tax and Ethics the last,
since I was pretty confident with Tax.
• 2nd reading: I started following the order
of the exams, but in a mirror fashion. So, I
studied Rem first, and ended
up with Poli. I made it a point to finish my
2nd reading before September ended
(although I don’t remember if I was
successful. Hehe)
• 3rd reading: I told myself that I’d start
with my third reading in September. I did
the mirror technique again, but gave
myself only one week to study the two
subjects coupled together. What I didn’t
finish in one week, I finished during
preweek.
I just marked where I left off on my notes.
◊ So, in the first week of September, I
studied Rem and Ethics. Second week, I
studied Comm and Crim. Third
week, I studied Civ and Tax. Fourth week, I
studied Poli and Labor.

◊ I found this “one week to study
everything” technique useful for two
reasons: first, it built my confidence since
getting three readings in was my goal to
begin with; and second, by the time I
started with Poli and Labor, the Bar
exams for those subjects were two weeks

Bar Tips Analysis 2016 Raymond Mercado IVA #Goodluckbatch2016 #NotoCrabs #OBF #maytheforcebewithyou 18
away. So it’s like I had two weeks for my
“pre-week” in Poli and Labor.

• So my goal for my first reading was to
read different materials, determine which
one I was most comfortable with, and
consolidate my notes in what I called my
“final” reviewer (if you check the chart I
made below, the materials with the most
readings were my “final” reviewers. All my
notes were consolidated there). For
example, in my first reading in Poli, I read
Bernas and Nachura, and then
consolidated the my notes in Bernas
(meaning, I put stuff that were in Nachura,
but not in
Bernas, in my Bernas book). So when it
came to my 2nd, 3rd, and pre-week reads, I
just had to open one book (except
Civ, which I swear had a thing against me.)

Anderson, Mandy 5th (2015) I relied a lot on what I learned during law school. It might help to have some
confidence yourself. Learn to relax and please please please, DO NOT PANIC.
Understand what you’re reading. Don’t compare your pace with your friends.
Everyone’s study habits are varied and our capacity to retain and understand
things are different. We are all special in that sense. We’ve studied for four years
in law school, if whatever study habits you had worked for you during that time,
then don’t change your strategy. Make sure you sleep well at night. It helps with
your memory.

Do not cram! I never studied the day before the exams since I believe it messes up
you’re understanding of things you’ve already understood (or thought you
understood). DO NOT PUT YOURSELF IN A SITUATION WHERE YOU COULD
PANIC. I’ve known a lot of people who’ve blacked out from cramming the night
before and not getting enough sleep.
Arceo, Reginald 4th (2015)
Tiu, Jericho 8th (2015) I did not attend any other lecture, even Jack’s non-pre-week for comm and poli. I
decided that by not going to lectures, I would save time and finish my reading
goals, which I did, to some extent. Do I regret this decision? Not at all. Pick your
lectures. Some people will say that going to all the lectures is will be tantamount
to one read, but in my opinion, that is a fucking pipe dream. Nothing will
compensate for actual hardcore reading. Honestly, I felt that I should have left
after the first 20 mins. of Alex Dy, but I didn’t want people to judge me lol I
should’ve left though. Sayang yung two hours.
Drilon, Christian 2nd (2014) Follow what worked for you during law school. You’re the only one who knows

Bar Tips Analysis 2016 Raymond Mercado IVA #Goodluckbatch2016 #NotoCrabs #OBF #maytheforcebewithyou 33
what works best for you given your strengths and abilities. Don’t feel pressured
by your batchmates, because everyone has their own style and pace. Have a plan
at the beginning of Bar review and try to stick to it as much as possible. Decide
how many reads you want to achieve, where you want to study, who you want to
study with, what your review materials will be, etc. Don’t listen to rumors about
examiners, and don’t try to read everything, because you’ll run out of time. Decide
early on what you want to achieve, and adjust as you go along. Generally, it’s
better if you use the books/reviewers you used in law school.

Fulgueras, Marjorie 9th (2013) My strategy was just to treat the exam just like an ordinary law school final exam.
I maintained my usual study habits and read the same textbooks and reviewers I
used in law school. It takes a while for me to adjust to new schedules so a sudden
change in study style for the bar would prove to be very difficult. When I started
reviewing after graduation, it was like I never left law school. It was just like
preparing for a recit five/six times a week, one subject at a time, and taking the
finals in October.

So my advice is to stick to your study habits and trust in your Ateneo education.
That would be enough to give you the composure and confidence you need when
you take the bar this October. However, don’t get overly confident. Remember,
you may have graduated from this school but that doesn’t mean you don’t have to
work hard to pass (or top it).

Things to Avoid
• Avoid neglecting the codals. Push comes to shove, the codals will save you.
My style is to read the codal before reading the commentaries. This may be time
consuming at first, but after the first and second reading, it will save you A LOT of
time.
• Try to avoid people that will just stress you out. DON’T compare your
progress with others.

Bar Tips Analysis 2016 Raymond Mercado IVA #Goodluckbatch2016 #NotoCrabs #OBF #maytheforcebewithyou 34

Best Kind of Help
Just stick to what works for you and treat the bar just like an ordinary final exam.
This way, you’ll get rid of all the stress, anxiety and paranoia. Talk to Topnotchers
and other barpassers for reassurance. Make a schedule and stick with it. Don’t
forget to rest but make sure you also make up for any wasted time.

But more than anything else, always remember that taking the bar is also a test of
character. Try to go through the process with grace. You may be reviewing for the
bar, but that doesn’t mean the world will stop just to accommodate you. Just be
quiet, find your own corner, read, pray, and don’t waste your energy doing the
unnecessary. And while you’re at it, try to enjoy the experience.
Wilwayco, Dianna 2nd (2013) During the entire Bar review, I listened to various study playlists. I had an upbeat
playlist (mostly Zedd, David Guetta,
etc) to wake me up. I also had an intense playlist that altered my brainwaves so
that it would be in the zone (Joe Hisahishi’s
compositions. If you know Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle, or Princess
Mononoke, you’ll know the music. Otherwise,
if you go to Ikkoryu Fukuoka Ramen, that’s the playlist). Be careful though,
because my intense playlist is really
intense. After listening to it for 4 hours, you’ll probably need to take a break.
Seryosong intense siya.

Ingles, Ignatius 1st (2012) Things to Avoid
1) Panicking. You panic, you’re halfway to losing.
2) Forgetting your exam permit. Photocopy it in color to be sure.
3) Drugs. Drugs are bad.
Best Kind of Help
Prayer and family.

Bar Tips Analysis 2016 Raymond Mercado IVA #Goodluckbatch2016 #NotoCrabs #OBF #maytheforcebewithyou 35
• Relax. My goodness, relax and don’t pressure yourself. You already know the
gravity of the exams, adding useless
pressure on yourself will just make you crack. Relax.
• Don’t stress yourself out with super complicated situations and “what if”
scenarios. The examiners will rarely ask
something that hasn’t been set in stone anyway. And it just adds useless worry.
• Stay with positive people. The bar is stress enough, no use having negative
people adding bad vibes to you.
• Don’t get into this mindset that “I have to stop my life for the bar and that I
shouldn’t have other world problems while
I’m reviewing.” The reality is, you WILL have other problems. Having that mindset
will just aggravate the problem. Instead,
have people who will help and support you through the “non-bar related”
problems. The world doesn’t stop for the bar,
and the sooner you accept that, the easier it’ll be to deal with non-bar related
problems. With that said, you should still
prioritize the bar.
• Exercise. Sound mind, sound body. Fit brain, fit belly.
• Take breaks, for the love of mankind.
• Take mini-vacations to reward yourself.
• When it came to study materials, the most important thing for me was that I
only had one material to study. That’s why I
made all those reviewers – to consolidate everything that I had to know in one
material. Having just one reviewer made it
easier for me to memorize and faster for me to study. It’s really hard having
different books in front of you when studying.
It’s a clutter and I found it cluttered my brain as well. (That’s why I had such a
hard time studying Civ, since everything
was scattered between different authors.)
• I also made it a point to just study Ateneo reviewers. (Although I’d consult with

Bar Tips Analysis 2016 Raymond Mercado IVA #Goodluckbatch2016 #NotoCrabs #OBF #maytheforcebewithyou 36
some Beda reviewers if some points
were missing in the Ateneo reviewers.)

Atadero, Raoul 1st (2011) Exercise & Eat Healthy. Apart from not overindulging on comfort food, try to put
in some exercise to keep yourself fit. You
cannot afford to get sick, so exercise, eat well, and take vitamins if necessary. If
you’re a stress eater, this will offset the Bar
Review weight gain. Remember though, that your first priority at this point is to
pass the Bar Exams – while you should put
in some exercise, don’t spend all your time at the gym getting yourself bikini-
ready.
Study Goal Fails. Don’t be too hard on yourself when you fail to meet the study
goals you’ve set for the day, week, or month.
I fell short on a lot of days.
Talk it Out. It helped me to take breaks to talk to the people I was studying with.
Apart from gossip (an excellent way to relax), we discussed things in our study
materials we were confused with – this was an excellent learning exercise.
Nap. When you need to, nap. There’s no point studying when you’re sleepy. I
usually couldn’t help myself – I was always
dozing off at the library (usually around 15-30 minutes).
Don’t Force It. If by the end of the day you’re very tired and sleepy, don’t force
yourself to study when you can’t process or
retain what you’re reading anyway. Sleep and continue the next day.
Pray. When you’ve studied harder than you’ve ever done before, there’s nothing
else to do but trust in some higher power.

Cast as wide a net as possible for your 1st reading. Try to read or at least browse
through as many books as you can for
your first reading. This allows you to whittle down your reading list for your 2nd
and succeeding readings to those materials

Bar Tips Analysis 2016 Raymond Mercado IVA #Goodluckbatch2016 #NotoCrabs #OBF #maytheforcebewithyou 37
that you think are useful and those you are comfortable with. Further, by reading
a range of materials, you’ll get at the very
least a vague familiarity of many different things – vague as this may be, you can
never tell when such stock knowledge at
the back of your mind might be needed.
Stick to the Beaten Path. Index your chosen study materials with those
recommended by people who have taken and
passed the Bar Exams before you. The materials chosen by the majority should be
sufficient. Now is not the time to be
eccentric!
Stick to Review Books or Reviewers. Resist the temptation to re-read your law
school textbooks for Bar Review when there
are review books or reviewers that will suffice. You do not have time to read all
your law textbooks again if you plan to do
more than one reading. If you feel that the available review materials for a
particular topic don’t quite meet your standards, then make exceptions. Make
these exceptions few and far between, however.
Organize your materials properly. Boxes, folders, bags, it doesn’t matter –
organize your materials in such a way that you can keep track of what you have
and find them easily. I personally wasted a lot of money photocopying or buying
materials
I forgot I already had because my things were in a sad state of disarray.
Bring your reading materials to Bar Review Lectures. Your Bar Review professors
might have updates to the law or jurisprudence that have not been incorporated
into your books and review materials. Bring them along to lectures so you can
make marginal notes on them to reflect these updates.

Javier, Filemon 2nd (2010) General Tips
In preparing for the bar exam it is important to PLAN, STUDY, FOCUS, and ENJOY.
It is crucial to have a plan or strategy when one is to take a monumental task, such

Bar Tips Analysis 2016 Raymond Mercado IVA #Goodluckbatch2016 #NotoCrabs #OBF #maytheforcebewithyou 38
as taking the bar exam. It is a must to have a study schedule as it will guide you
during the entire period of your bar preparation. You may not be able to follow
your schedule strictly, but at least try to go back on track and catch up for the lost

Be physically fit. Exercise. Take vitamins. Eat nourishing food. Pray. Sleep.
Enjoy. The bar experience is a wonderful experience. Enjoy every single day of it.
Focus. My father died during the first month of my review. I took good care of my
pregnant wife during the entire review period. Those factors could have easily
distracted me. I was still able to focus. You can also.

be willing to sacrifice more. You will not top the bar just because you are brilliant.
There are equally brilliant law graduates who will be taking the bar with you. The
only way you can out shine them is by being better prepared. Do not waste time.
Study now.

First, assess yourself. Know your weak and strong subjects.
List the subjects and try to evaluate what your weak and strong points are. From
there, you can craft your strategy. Think of what works for you (e.g. book or
reviewer type of person).

Target:
Weak subjects → at least 75%
Strong subjects → 90% up

Decide how many readings you will have. Make your schedule. After making your
schedule, read trending topics.

Browse past bar examinations, before you start studying. Don’t forget to check the
suggested answers.

If you are a “fast-reader”, I suggest that you try to have four (4) or five (5)
readings. If you are the more deliberate type, two (2) or three (3) readings should
be enough. Do what worked for you during your years in law school. Do not
change gear just for the bar exam. Your study schedule should fit you. Hence, your
assessment of yourself is important.
I had four (4) readings excluding pre-week (hence, I had 5 readings in total). I
read the text books that I used when I was still in law school.

Deactivate facebook, Twitter and other social media
After the finals exam, ceremonial change of life style (no social media)
Email yahoo groups and cellphone
Madaming matatalino na bumagsak because of facebook
Its a good ceremony to settle your mind set
Do not change love life during the four months
Clean your room
Guilty ka na natulog ka.
Do not play games!
Master some subjects, and know little of everything
In the bar exam, katakot takot na jj gagawin mo.
Study as if you will fail, and study as if you will pass.
Balance of confidence and fear
Be scared of repeating the whole experience

Bar examiner - impt rumor. Because usually the bar examiners have books. And
the examiners are required to submit a hundred questions. And definitely may

FOCUS, BAD THINGS HAPPEN, BUT FOCUS. FOCUS LANG YAN KAYA MO
YAN.INVESTED KA NA DAPAT SOBRA. INVESTED KA NA.
Mejia, Cecile 7th (2007) Make a self-assessment: “This is my weakness, this is my strength.” Disable social
media accounts. Make your phone simple or just leave your phone. I only used
books cause I’m not used to reviewers. If you’re not a memorizer do more
readings. It’s all about discipline. Let go of toxic friends. During the bar you have a
heightened sensitivity. Emotions are always fragile. Madali kang magalit at
mairita at mainis (waste of time), I let go of ASIL don’t do Colayco Cup, let go of all
activities. It’s just review, review, review. Also, enjoy mo kasi once mo lang yan
iexperience. Pray everyday. Bawal breakdown, bawal away pre-week, go with
your friends on pre-week.

Tell yourself: “This is the first and last I am going to do it”

Jimenez, Jack 3rd (1968) Not enough to use reviewers, use textbooks, more particularly the books you used
in school

Devote the most time on Rem and least on Ethics
Don’t feel insecure with others who are faster and who have handouts
If the person giving the bar lecturer is your professor, skip it, but if its someone
new I suggest you take it.

Topics to watch out for:
o Limited liability
o Provisional Remedies
o Prelim Injunction
o Res Gestae
