Best friends till Janah

Relations between people are very important in Islam and maintaining good relations with
others is a main priority of a practicing Muslim. This is something we try to teach our
children from a very young age.

Masha Allah, Yusuf and Sameeha have become good friends. Yusuf who normally plays by
himself happily engages with Sameeha. Although, Sameeha has a very dominating personality,
on many occasions I have noticed that she gives in to Yusuf. I think Yusuf realizes that which
is why he chooses to play with her.

Their friendship started when one day Yusuf was very upset when grandma left and Sameeha
kept giving and passing him toys until he calmed down. Since then, slowly Yusuf started to
respond to Sameeha’s warmth and you often find them playing together now. They have started
to share the same interests.

Islam takes friendship to a higher level, referring to Muslims as brothers and sisters, and
expecting them to treat each other as such. A Muslim is expected to wish for others that which
they wish for themselves. From Te Whariki perspective, by playing with others they develop
social skills which in turn allow for social emotional growth and growing sense of identity as
learners.
