Chapter 36: Discontinuing an IV Line

1. Assists the client to a comfortable position.
2. Places a linen-saver pad under the extremity that
contains the IV catheter.
3. Applies procedure gloves.
4. Closes the roller clamp on the administration set.
5. Carefully removes the IV dressing and tape that is
securing the tubing.
6. Applies a sterile 2×2 gauze pad above the IV
insertion site and gently removes the catheter, directing
it straight along the vein. Does not press down on the
gauze pad while removing the catheter.
7. Immediately applies firm pressure with the gauze
pad over the insertion site. Holds pressure for 2 to 3
minutes; longer if bleeding persists.
8. Removes the soiled 2×2 gauze pad and replaces it
with a sterile 2×2 gauze pad. Secures it with a piece of
1-inch tape.
9. Disposes of the IV catheter in the appropriate
sharps container.
10. Discards the IV tubing, linen-saver pad, IV solution
container, and gloves in the appropriate trash container,
according to agency policy.
