Self care tasks:

Folding laundry
Teacher Liz
November 2018

Sean , When teacher Nur hung the laundry outside today, you took an interest in helping straight away.
Teacher Nur assisted you to be able to hang the washing out. You were so eager to help & willing to be
shown what you needed to do. By helping to take part in chores at An-nur you will have a real sense of
ownership and belonging here. You are learning to participate in taking care of the environment and take
responsibility.
What other centre chores could I involve you in?
You are definitely becoming more interested in developing your own self care skills, I know that you can
wash and dry your hands, eat lunch, choose experiences you want to do, open doors and put on your own
jacket. I wonder if there are any other self-care tasks I can help you to master? Can you put your own
shoes and socks on?
Other children saw you and wanted to join in too, your interest contributed their learning too.
Through involving children in chores like this they feel a valued member of an ako environment, rather
than an adult/child relationship. An ako environment values the children’s contribution and recognises
that everyone is a teacher and everyone is a learner.
Through participating in centre chores you will develop:
Maths – counting, pattern, Language – listening to instructions, giving others instructions, Motor skills-
control hands and fingers to be able to use pegs, pincer grip, Hand eye co-ordination – practice, Social –
belonging, participation, responsibility, contribution, Self care skills, Independence.
