A Holiday in October

• Halloween is
celebrated on
October 31st.

• Many countries in
Europe and around
the world celebrate
Halloween
• Halloween comes
from the Celtic
/keltic/ tradition.
• Around this date,
the Celts celebrated
the end of summer
and the beginning of
winter.
• This festivitiy was
called Samhain.
• The Celts
believed the
spirits of dead
people came alive
on this night.
• They built
bonfires and wore
costumes to send
evil spirits and
ghosts away.
• This Celtic tradition was turned by the
Catholic Church into “All Hollows Eve”
which means the vigil of all Saints.

• This is where the word Halloween comes

from.
• The Celts used pumpkins to frighten
evil spirits. Now, many families carve
pumpkins together. They cut a face in it
with a knife. They put a candle in the
inside to make it light up.
• This is called a Jack-o-lantern.
They put the Jack-o-lantern in a
window so everybody can see it.
• Many people
also dress up in
costumes.

• Costumes can
be scary or
funny.
• Children “Trick-or-
Treat” in their
Halloween
costumes to get
sweets.

They go to a door
and knock.
When it opens they
scream,
TRICK OR TREAT!
