Good Grammar Can Make You Money

Goal for the lesson:

sh
• To improve the ability to hear grammar mistakes.
• To gain confidence in describing everyday objects and ideas.
• To improve oral comprehension of grammar standards.

li
• To build teamwork and group cohesion.

ng
Classroom Activities:

E
Activity 1: Advanced Taboo
• Write the word taboo on the word, explain the concept (something you cannot/should not
talk about), and give two or three examples.

al
Tell the class the purpose of the game is to practice describing objects (such as hat).
Identify and note some ways to describe things on the board, such as colors, size, uses,
on
cost, etc. Ask the class for examples, e.g. the hat has many colors. It is bigger than a hand
but smaller than a football. We use it on the top of our body. It keeps us warm and
fashionable.
• Divide the class into groups of three (a group of two is acceptable in odd numbered
i

classes).
at

• Distribute the Taboo Slips, 2 per person (it is okay if duplicates are given to DIFFERENT
groups).

rn

Remind the class that they must describe the word to their group without saying any of
the taboo words.
• Circulate among the students to help.

te

After a few minutes call time and randomly ask each student to provide an example to the
class until all of the students have given examples.
In

Activity 2: Good Grammar Can Make You Money

• Explain that grammar is important to English and can be difficult to learn; however, many
eb

native speakers learn the basics of grammar before they read. They learn it by practice
and through listening. We must improve our ears so that we can trust what “sounds right”.
• Write the following sentences on the board and ask the class for corrections:
W

o We went home and cook the dinner (cooked).

o She likes to playing in the park (to play).
o We will go to the movies next weekend (fine).

• Divide the class to two teams.

• Cut up the good grammar slips (BEFORE CLASS) and divide them roughly even
amongst the two teams.
• The students are divided into two teams. [A and B]
• The teacher gives each team a captain, the teams can only speak through their captains but
they can discuss each sentence among themselves before their captain gives an answer,
the teacher only takes answers from the captain.

• Team A, is given a sentence by the teacher to read; It may have bad grammar or good
grammar.
• Team B has to say whether it is good or bad.
• If they are right, give them 1 counter.
• Then if the sentence is wrong ask them if they want to double or quit.
• They can double their money by making the sentence right if it is wrong.
• If they are wrong they lose all their money in this go.
• If the sentence is correct then they can ask for a new sentence and again go ‘double or
quits’.
• If they decide not to play any more then the turn goes to the other team and the money

sh
they have won in this round is safe.
• The teacher handles the money and explains the grammar points as required.

li
Teachers’ Note: The following sentences may seem ambiguous:

ng
I have drunk tea before. – Bad grammar: non-standard past participle
I would go in a while. - Bad grammar. This on its own without a conditional clause is not a
sentence in the context of this activity. The only way it could be correct is if it were a response.

E
E.g. ‘When would you go to visit her in hospital if you were me?’ ‘I would go in a while.’ The
correct form is, ‘I will go in a while.’
I would give you a call tonight – Bad Grammar for the same reason as above.

to cough every winter.’ al

I would cough every winter. – Bad Grammar. No conditional clause. The correct form is ‘I used

Is there any taxi available? – Bad grammar – non-standard form. ‘Any’ can only be used with a
on
plural. Correct form can be either ‘Are there any taxis available?’ or ‘Is there a taxi available?’

How many persons are coming? – Good grammar. The word ‘persons’ is usually only used in
i

legal contexts but there is nothing actually wrong with it here, although you might tell students
at

that it sounds overly formal.
