Grade Level: 4th grade Subject Area: Science

1. State Standards:
4-PS3-2 Energy: Make observations to provide evidence that energy can be transferred from place to place by sound, light, heat, and electric
currents.
4-PS3-3 Energy: Ask questions and predict outcomes about the changes in energy that occur when objects collide.
2. Lesson Objective(s) & Targeted Outcome(s):
I can explain how energy transfers in a collision.
3. Materials & Resources:
 STEMScope videos: Asteroids and Science Today
 Worksheets: Connection Video and Science Today
 Chrome books
 SEP
 Groups:

4. Knowing the Students:
The students have completed a unit for math. They are going to be taking the test on Wednesday. I know there are three or four students
who are struggling to understand different parts of the unit. I decided to do jeopardy after talking with my CT about review for the test.
Students are going to be interrupted for an assembly, so allowing them this time to practice without having to write on a piece of paper.
5. Literacy Connection:
W.4.8: Recall relevant information from experiences or gather relevant information from print and digital sources; take notes and categorize
information and provide a list of sources.
6. Technology Integration:
Students will watch two videos on the board while taking notes. They will be interacting with the Chromebooks to explore the SEP which is
discussing how energy can transfer.
There groups are based on their reading NWEA scores – low with high-low and high with low-high.

● Put library books away
● Fourth graders, today we are going to watch a couple videos on collision and do
an activity. You are going to be working in partners for part of the time.
● Tomorrow there is going to be a
Step-By-Step Procedures ALL: watch the videos, do the activity
1. We are going to be stopping the video along the way to answer questions. I do MOST: complete the notes, work with
not want you to move ahead. their partners to do the activity
2. Watch STEMScope Video – Asteroids SOME: won’t want to work with a
3. We are going to watch another video talking about collisions as well. When we partner.
1:05-1:40 complete this video, we are going to fill out another worksheet individually. IEP: Have a partner to work with
4. I would like you to get in your partners from reading Monday. I have the groups if
you need them. We are going to open Clever and find STEMScopes.
5. You are going to do an SEP. This is going to be investigate Kinetic Energy
transferring.
6. You are going to work together and make sure you write questions because we
will be checking your scientific questions.
1:40-1:45 8. Closure:
● I would like you tell your partner one thing you learned today.
10. Assessment & Evaluation:
● I want students to turn in their video notes to see how they did on the them. It
might end up just walking around and checking to see how they did.
● They have a quest tomorrow that will decide how much they’ve learned.
11. Reflection (after teaching lesson):
Immediately after you have taught this lesson, reflect on your teaching by composing a response addressing the questions below. A
complete reflection includes all of the following:
● What went well with this lesson? Describe what went very well.
● What did not go as anticipated? Describe at least one unexpected issue that arose and why you think the lesson went in that direction?
● What would you do differently next time?
After you have reviewed your assessment data for this lesson, respond to the following questions:
● What do the assessment results indicate you achieved with this lesson?
● Did this lesson meet or exceed the target learning goal?
● Based on your assessment findings, what and how will you teach the next lesson?
