Job Description
At Cal Poly Pomona, the Office of Student Life and Cultural Centers houses all eight
cultural centers for the university. Each of these centers is budgeted to have one Coordinator,
and supervise four to five undergraduate students in the role of Social Justice Leader each year.
At the Pride Center, Bri Serrano has been Coordinator for the last three years. The coordinators
of the cultural centers report to the Senior Coordinator of Cultural Centers, which reports to the
Director of the Office of Student Life and Cultural Centers. They meet with their supervisory
staff and fellow cultural center coordinators at least once a week. Bri also meets each week with
their student staff; they meet once as a group altogether and also have one-on-one meetings with
each of the Social Justice Leaders for 30-60 minutes per week.
In this role, Bri is tasked with educating the broader community on LGBTQ+ issues and
provide ways for those in the campus community to become supportive allies. Bri provides
educational workshops such as Safe Zone Ally Training for all faculty, staff, and students on
regularly scheduled dates and as requested. They provide guidance and support on inclusion
policies for the university to provide gender inclusive facilities, option for preferred name, and
access to resources. They work in conjunction with the Title IX Coordinator to ensure that
LGBTQ+ student rights are protected. The Coordinator of the Pride Center also works with the
Office of Equity, Inclusion, and Compliance to support the equity of queer and transgender
students on campus. For the purposes of cohesive programming, coordinators of the cultural
centers collaborate on many events throughout the year on events such as the following:
LGBTQ+ Latinx Night, Dia De Los Muertos event, Diversity and Inclusion Training, etc.
PRIDE CENTER PROGRAM EVAL 4
Within the Pride Center, Bri helps coordinate program and services such as Queer Chats,
Drag Show, Lavender Graduation, Halloween Party, Holiday Dinner, Trans Fem Conference,
Scholarship Reception, and others. Bri helps facilitate and coordinate group discussions as
necessary, whether it is for Queer Chats, Diversity and Inclusion workshops, or for O-STEM
celebrations such as on Trans Remembrance Day. For the program, Bri has an overall budget of
about $40,000. This consists of accounts within Associated Students Inc. and Cal Poly Pomona
Foundation. While this amount of money has been sufficient so far, it continues to decrease over
time. In the past, this has created complications for the installment of necessary staff members
According to the Cal Poly Pomona Pride Center website, the mission of this cultural
center is to provide “education, advocacy, support and a safe space for the lesbian, gay, bisexual,
transgender, intersex, queer, questioning (LGBTIQQ) and ally community at Cal Poly Pomona”.
The website also indicates that goals for this cultural center are:
2. Students will have raised social consciousness and cultural awareness of LGBTQ and
intersectional identities.
3. Students will utilize opportunities for leadership, academic, and personal development.
4. Students will increase collaborative efforts with faculty, staff, and other students across
the university.
5. Students will develop and cultivate relationships with surrounding schools and
community agencies.
6. Students will have increased retention and success through programs and services.
The overall purpose of these goals is to have students develop a sense of belonging within the
While the Pride Center had a clear mission and goals, the program and services did not
have a clear plan for program and service evaluation. It was important to narrow down all
programs and services offered by the Pride Center, and then identify the specific goals for
student learning of each of these. By doing so, it was determined whether student learning and
growth aligned with the mission and/or goals identified for students who participate in Pride
Center events. The following is a breakdown of these programs and services and their respective

● They were primarily (1) Latinx, (2) White, and (3) Asian Pacific Islander.
● The majority of respondents had visited the Pride Center for less than two years.
● Most students participate in the study and lounge space, Queer Chats, Safe Space, and
● Students feel that the Pride Center provides a community, mental health support,
● Students would like to see career development, a mentorship program, and a clothes
closet.
● Additional comments
○ Everyone is super nice
○ Larger/more space
○ Space gets packed sometimes. I wish there was a bigger lounge space.
○ Bigger center please! :)
○ More regular Sex Chats
○ The Pride Center is a great place and I aim to come to visit more often!
○ To be honest, for me the pride center is very accommodating and loving.
○ It can always be better, like from 100% to 110%. We should have a bigger space
to be more ADA and inclusive to those who don't like small spaces.
○ Therefore we can accommodate more folx and more identities having space
where I am not judged, rather celebrated for being who I am makes college even
more enjoyable.
○ As we've discussed, the pride center really needs a bigger space! It never occurred
to me to try to hang out or study there aside from scheduled chats, because there
simply isn't room.
○ I didn’t know about the Halloween party and holiday dinner, but now I will learn
more about the events.
○ Larger space
○ I would like to start taking advantage of said services but I am anxious to become
involved!
○ I’m a first year, so I may be wrong, but maybe hosting more social events to a
broader audience to welcome new people.. seems like the people who attend are
mostly regulars. Great community though!
○ I'd like to see more inclusion for asexuals in the community. More documents that
we can read in order to be informed about coming out to others but also to
ourselves.
○ We all hope for a bigger center but maybe in the future, it can be obtained. The
Pride Center is a place to call home and I am an extremely grateful that this place
exists.
