Introduction:
• Positive youth development (PYD) theory promotes
guidelines to support young
people so as they can thrive into adulthood.
• Conventionally, youth development services are
reactive and emphasizing on fixing problems of
target youth population.
• PYD is characterized as proactive and focus on
developing positive outcomes to molding all young
people to become successful adults.
• PYD is summarised through model of 6Cs. 4

1. Competency
The ability and motivation for civic and
cultural engagement, physical and
emotional health, intellectual
achievement, and employability.

• Educate the youth to make their own decision.
• youth does not learnt through ‘telling them
thing’, they should be given trust to make best
decision by taking into account both side of
the coin.
• The resulting from their decision; be it positive
or not, should be own by the youth – thus
making them learn effectively through first
hand experience.
• Youth should be trained early, by providing
them options in daily life activities.
• When they face with options that directly
effecting their future, such as the courses of
their degree, youth should be able to come up
with pros and cons of each options, before
making their decision.

2. Confidence
Having a sense of self-efficacy, or the
ability to believe in oneself and have a
positive outlook toward the future.

• The ability of the youth to trust in themselves.
• Many things contributed to the confidence in
one’s self – intellectual, social status, talent,
beauty, etc.
• Youth can overlook their own potential as
they become overwhelm by others that they
think superior than them.
• In truth, no one is truly better than others, as
we are all unique in all aspect of life.

3. Connection
Having strong relationships with friends and
families, a feeling of membership and
belonging, and a sense of safety and
structure.

• Youth tends to group and limit themselves
into only a particular circle of peers they
choose.
• No exposure to other people different in age,
interest, belief, etc., is root of many problems.
• By putting them into group with people that
they will not choose otherwise, will expand
their social connection.

4. Character
Having an understanding and respect for
societal norms, a sense for what is right and
wrong, and acting with integrity and
responsibility.

• Character involves the acquisition of mental
and behavioral attributes that develop
through bidirectional feedback (Person and
Context Relations) between the social world
and an individual’s behaviors develops in
context.

5. Caring
Showing a sense of empathy and concern for
others.

• Caring of others by supporting them even if
you have to refuse them.
• Caring not only to the people we knew, but
also strangers.

6. Contribution:
Being an active participant in one’s community,
with family, friends, and taking
good physical care of oneself.
Contribution involves active and engaged citizenship:
Civic duty, Civic skills, Civic participation and
Neighbourhood social connection

contribute something to the society.
