The Last of The Cheju Divers
The Last of The Cheju Divers
The Last of The Cheju Divers
(1) For many years the women of Cheju Island in South Korea have made a
living as divers. (2) Today these women divers can make as much as 300 U.S.
dollars a day. (3) However, the job is dangerous and most younger women on the
island don't want to do it. (4) Right now, the youngest diver is 45 years old and
the oldest is 75. (5) In the past, diving was the only way women could get food
for their families. (6) Now it helps them save money for their children's
education. (7) However, today the younger women have other choices as well,
which is a good thing. (8) For example, a young woman named Sunny Hong
didn't want to become a woman diver. (9) She decided to become a tour guide
instead. (10) She said that she wanted some kind of job that she would be good at
and where she could use the English language.
