The Coat of Arms

F
OR ME and many others, the gemsbok antelope, or oryx as they are
called locally, typify Namibia. The West-African nation’s coat of arms
features a shield with its national colours, flanked by an oryx on
either side. Such is the importance of this species to the country and
its people, and numbers are thriving thanks to a well-managed
hunting industry. With its stunning sabre-like horns, and striking
black and white facial markings, the gemsbok is certainly one of the most iconic of
the African plains game species; and Namibia is the place to go to hunt them. Here
they graze in large numbers; and in this semi-arid fringe of the Kalahari desert,
some of the biggest oryx trophies in all of Africa grow, and often die of old age, too.

The Cleaning Rod. I started my
.17 journey using an Otis “flexible

effective, it was fiddly and time
consuming. But it still sits there in
my field kit if needed. I have used
Parker Hale coated spring steel

.17 calibre. So I then moved on to a
stainless steel rod and because I
used just a bit too much force on
the rod in its initial outings, it
developed more than one bend in
it. No attempts to straighten it
were successful enough to not
feel the rod bearing on the

Satanic Bulls
S
CRUB bulls have caused me more concern over the years than buffalo have, and I’ve
shot far more buffalo. When a buffalo bull lifts his head and looks at you, it’s mostly
just curiosity. When they actually have a go, it’s for good reason. I guess scrubbers
have their reasons, too, but they react to them more often! If wounded, they’re far
more likely to make an aggressive last stand than buffalo. This doesn’t mean that
buffalo are to be taken lightly, but I believe that scrubbers will try to kill a fellow more often,
provoked or not. I’m a pretty safe operator, and I don’t have many tales of “death at my feet” charges
from buffalo, scrubbers, boars, camels, one of each. But add the sudden attacks that don’t develop
into full-blown charges due to quick shooting, and there are a few more stories – and a few more
trips to the shop for new jocks. Anyway, scrub bulls aren’t usually that bad given you’ve got a
proper rifle and have your wits about you. Mostly, worry results when you look down at your rifle
and realise that it’s not a stopper. And then, as you look at that mad scrubber walking toward you,
with his evil-looking light-skinned eye patches, the thought crosses your mind that he might look
satanic. Dramatic? Yes. But you can be forgiven for just a little drama pumping through your veins!
