This can be recognized P-taphorically in this composition, which sheds light on this state from three angles. These angles represent three iods that play an important role in the history of Virginia: the colonization, slavery, and the American Civil War. Je composition starts with a short, expressive introduction in a slow tempo, followed by two parts in lively temp. e, the adventures and hardships of the first colonists ate depicted. They are first depicted by means of a acteristic theme with a lively, typically American sounding accompaniment, resulting in a new theme. Through regular alternation of times (6/8 and 2/4) and keys, the music finally calms down in a unison final note, which resents the colonists reaching their goal - in 1607, they founded the first permanent English settlement: town, the benefit of the tobacco plantations, in 1619, Virginia introduced black slaves from abroad. This is expressed the following slow movement in which a melancholic minor theme forms the starting point. Also, we can hear Pements of the blues, which reflects the nature of the slaves’ emotions. xt, in the brass section, the foreboding of the American Civil War can be heard in which Virginia becomes the sin battlefield.-The battle between the northern and southern states emerges in a war-like part. The same theme used as in the beginning movement, where the colonists fought with the Indians, seration and hope sound trough in the slow final theme where we detect the minor theute of the middle part. wever, the theme is played in = major key here, threegh which the optimism for the future ari QD Aut der Landiarte sieht der amerikanische Staat Virginia wie ein etwas schief geratenes Dreieck aus. Diese Form schlagt sich bildhaft in der vorliegenden Kemposition nieder, die den Staat aus drei verschiedenen Blickwinkeln beleuchtet, drei Zeitabschnitten, die fOr Virginia von besonderer Bedeutung waren: Dis Kolonisation, die Sklaverei und der amerikanische Birgerkrieg. Das Werk beginnt mit einer kurzen, ausdrucksstarken Einleitung in langsamem Tempo, woraut zwei sehr rasche Abschnitte folgen. in ihnen sind die Abenteuer und Mihen der ersten Kolonialsten dargestellt: An ein charakteristisches Thema mit lebhafter, typisch amerikanisch wirkender Begleitung schlieSt sich ein zweites Thema an. In regelmaSigen Tonarten- und Taktwechseln (6/8- und 2/4-Takt) kommt die Musik allmahlich zur Ruhe: Die Kolonialisten haben ihe Ziel erveicht; im Jahre 1607 wurde mit -amestown die erste feste englsche Siedlung gegrindet. 1619 wurden zur Bearbeitung der Tabakplantagen schwarze Sklaven nach Virginia gebracht. Der entsprechende Abschnitt der Komposition ist langsam und entwickelt sich von einer melancholischen ‘Melodie in Moll aus. Elemente des Blues spiegeln die Gefthle der Sklaven wider. Als Nachstes erklingen in den Blechblasern die Vorboten des amerikanischen Burgerkrieges, der zu inem wesentlichen Teil in Virginia ausgetragen wurde. Der Kampf zwischen den Nord- und Sddstaaten wird in einem kriegerisch klingenden musikalischen Abschnitt greifbar. Emeut taucht hier das Thema aus dem Anfangsteil auf, in dem der Kampf der Kolonialisten mit den Indianecn dargestelit wurde.
