AREA 2

The context
Description of the area and its features relevant to the objectives and project indications
The area is located in the coastal hamlet of Torre S. Giovanni, adjacent to the existing town centre,
bounded by a historic inter-municipal road.
The area, partly built up and partly abandoned, is located close to the already built up areas of the city
centre, destined almost completely to second homes and tourist facilities. Along the road mentioned,
there are abandoned historical quarries and an ancient "colonial center", also abandoned.
The particular location suggests the themes of urban completion and enhancement of existing cultural
resources, also in order to alleviate the coastal settlement pressure and qualify and diversify the tourist
offer of the small settlement.

Objectives
Objectives related to the project of the area
The general objective of the intervention is the redevelopment of the entire area to be configured as a
framework for the completion of the city:
The specific objectives are:
- the construction of a new residential settlement as matrix of the completion of the city,
also possibly by intervening on existing buildings considered worthless;
- the creation of public spaces for relations, of which the settlement is lacking
- the construction of the "park of the quarries" and the contextual development of the
"colonial center" as a new attractor and connection of these elements with the coast
- the reconfiguration of the intermunicipal connection road along with the park of the
quarries and the enhancement of the “colonial centre”
- the creation of a road system for cars, bicycles and pedestrian that allows both the internal
relations of the new settlement, and the connection with the equipment, with the coast
and the countryside and its landscape routes
- the redevelopment and development of the city's edge towards the countryside

Specific requests for plant, relations, materials
The entire area must be affected by a coordinated and comprehensive project with a uniform design
idea.
The planivolumetric solutions, the layout of the public spaces and the road axis of penetration must be
read in an integrated and complementary way.
From a design point of view, consideration is fundamental:
- the size of the city, its fabrics and its public spaces, which the project must complete while
respecting its characteristics
- the need to redevelop the seasonal settlement as a whole, avoiding the repetition of the
settlement fences that characterize the most recent interventions
- the need to enhance the pre-existing features: of landscape value (disused quarries), by
creating a real park; of architectural value (colonial centre), by avoiding considering it as an
“island” separate from the city, but instead attributing to it a nodal and qualifying function
of the settlement
- the need to reorganise the intermunicipal link road as the 'park' road
- the need to connect the new intervention to the coast, considered as the main attractor
and landscape emergency
- the characteristics of the coastal territory of Ugento, rich in landscape and cultural values,
which the project must enhance through paths, views, construction of the urban margin
