GUIDELINES FOR APPLICATIONS FOR FULL-TIME OR PART-TIME LEAVES OF

ABSENCE WITHOUT PAY

Faculty members requesting full-time or part-time leaves of absence without pay should complete the
“Application for Leave of Absence Without Pay” form. Eligibility for service benefits (credit toward
service salary increase, credit toward probationary service, and credit toward sabbatical leave) shall be
determined in advance of the leave. The application form incorporates the request for leave with request
for service benefits. Applications for leaves of absence should be submitted prior to June 15 (for Fall
semester) or November 15 (for Spring semester).

Faculty members are referred to Section 674 of the CSUN Administrative Manual Section 600 for
guidance in seeking information used in requesting service benefits in the case of leaves without pay. In
preparing the statement in support of the leave request, the faculty member should keep in mind the
criteria that the various approving agencies will apply in reviewing the request.

There are two types of leaves of absence without pay (personal and professional) and three general
categories of service benefits. Only probationary or tenured faculty requesting a professional leave are
eligible for any of the three service benefits. However, pursuant to Article 22.2 of the CBA, a temporary
faculty unit employee shall receive credit towards SSI eligibility while on leave. All faculty seeking a
leave for professional purposes, except those who are at the SSI maximum of the salary range or have
received all SSIs to which they are entitled during the period they would be on leave, should be
interested in applying for credit toward service salary increase. Faculty members who have not yet
earned tenure at CSUN might be interested in seeking credit toward the number of years required to
achieve tenure. The majority of faculty going on a professional leave would probably be interested in
obtaining credit for service toward sabbatical leave. On the application form the faculty member should
check those benefits that are requested. Please note that no more than one year of credit towards service
salary increase, tenure, or sabbatical leave may be granted for any leave and extension thereof.

The College Dean grants or denies the leave request. If the leave is granted, the College Dean will
forward the application with further recommendations to the Associate Vice President, Faculty Affairs,
who acts upon the requests for service benefits and notifies all parties of the action taken. Any faculty
member not satisfied with the decision of the Associate Vice President, Faculty Affairs may request that
the Personnel Planning and Review Committee review the application and make a final
recommendation.

Per Article 22.7 of the Unit 3-Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement, a faculty member on a leave of
absence without pay shall notify their College Dean no later than April 1 of his/her intention to return to
duty at the beginning of the academic year or no later than October 1 of his/her intention to return to
duty at the beginning of the spring semester.

If any credits have been recommended, the faculty member, upon return from the leave, must complete a
“Report of Activities During Leave of Absence Without Pay” form and submit such report (which will
become part of the Personnel Action File) to the Associate Vice President, Faculty Affairs, who will
determine whether the leave was used in accordance with the approved leave plan. The Associate Vice
President, Faculty Affairs shall consult the Personnel Planning and Review Committee in cases where
there appears to have been a deviation from the leave plan. Such a report must be submitted no later
than one calendar year after the faculty member returns to active service.
