Date:

Experiment: 5.2
Aim: To Show that living things give out
carbon dioxide during respiration.

Identifying the problem:

Do living things give out carbon dioxide
during respiration?
Hypothesis:
Living things give out carbon dioxide
during respiration.
Constant variable:
Air in the test tube
Manipulated Variable:
The presence of living things
Responding Variable:
The colour of bicarbonate indicator.
Diagram:

Figure 5.15
Procedure:
1. The apparatus is set up as shown in
Figure 5.15.
2. The test tubes are kept in a dark
cupboard for three hours.
3. The colour of bicarbonate indicator is
noted at the end of the experiment.
4. A report is written in my science report
book.

Observations
1. The bicarbonate indicator in the test
tubes that contain living things change
colour from red to yellow.
2. The bicarbonate indicator in the test
tube that does not contain any living
thing does not change colour.
Interpreting results/discussions
1. The bicarbonate indicator changes
colour from red to yellow because the
content of carbon dioxide in the test
tube that contains living things has
increased.
2. The test tube that does not contain any
living things acts as a control
experiment.
3. It is used to show that any carbon
dioxide detected is given out by the
living things in the test tube.

Conclusion;
1. Living things give out carbon dioxide
during respiration. The hypothesis is
accepted.
