Experiment: 5.3
Aim: To show that oxygen is needed for
combustion.

Identifying the problem:

Is oxygen needed for combustion.
Hypothesis:
Oxygen is needed for combustion.
Constant variable:
Type of candle
Manipulated variable:
Air supply
Responding variable:
Time for candle to go out

Diagram:
Figure 5.17

Procedure:
1. Two similar candles are lightening up as
shown in Figure 5.17.
2. One of the candles is placed inside a gas jar.
3. What happens to the candles are observed
after a little while.
4. A report is written in my science report book.
Observations
1. The candle in the gas jar goes out.
2. The candle outside the gas jar continues to
burn.

Interpreting the result/discussion

1. The candle in the gas jar goes out because
the oxygen in the gas jar has been used up.
2. The candle outside the gas jar continues to
burn because there is continuous supply
oxygen in the air.

Conclusion:
1. Oxygen is needed for combustion. The
hypothesis is accepted.
