Almighty and eternal God, the strength of those who believe and the hope of

fullness of Christ's blessing, who is alive and reigns with you and the Holy
Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

Holy and eternal God, whose glory cherubim and seraphim and all the hosts
of heaven proclaim: Sanctify and bless, we pray, the music of our worship
and all who make it. Grant that the service that we offer here may reflect
your eternal glory which we share with all your saints in light. Amen.

BISHOPS IN APRIL April 5 & 19
On Easter Day, Bishop Peter Fenty, our Area Bishop, will be
making his second episcopal visit since his consecration in
June 2013. He will also be attending the next meeting of our
Advisory Board on April 21. On April 19, Bishop Bill Hockin,
who served as one of the interim pastors before the
appointment of Canon Stephen will be our guest preacher.
We look forward to welcoming them.

WEDNESDAYS IN LENT Wednesday April 8
On April 8 at 7:30 p.m. we conclude our series as we consider
the call of Paul. John Carrington will facilitate the session in
the church. Let’s explore the following questions:
What was he doing? What was he called to do?
What was the context into which he was called?
What challenges did he faced? How do we compare?
LOONIES FOR LENT
At Easter we celebrate our deliverance from things that can
enslave our bodies, minds and souls, evil, sin and death. We
continue to live into that new life with the Risen Christ offers
by making that life known to others. One way will be the use
of our “loonies and toonies for Lent” to support the Thornhill
Public School’s nutrition program, our 185th anniversary
outreach project. Please convert your coins to a cheque or
“bills” and send them in Lenten Envelope. You may use any
blank envelope as long as you mark them “LENTEN Offering”
and include your name or envelope # so that tax receipt can
be issued.
SENIORS’ LUNCHEON Wednesday April 8
We invite mature adults to share in the Eucharist at 11:00 am
followed by fellowship/luncheon. Please let us know that you
are coming to ensure adequate seating and staffing by calling

RUMMAGE SALE Saturday April 18
As we do spring cleaning please consider donating your gently
used & clean items for our sale. Items are accepted between

linens, kitchen & household items, books, CD/DVD, toys, small
appliances (in working order & less than 10 years old).
We cannot sell: furniture, infant crib/car-seats/playpen,

HTS MUSICAL PRESENTATION April 26
On March 1, under the direction of Ms. Danielle Stock,
students of the Holy Trinity School blessed us with their music,
drumming and singing. They are returning for another musical
presentation as the school’s contribution to our 185th
celebration, on Sunday April 26 at 10:00 a.m., forming part of
the service.
TOWN HALL MEETINGS
Episcopal areas will hold Town Hall meetings in April to
prepare for the next Regular Session of Synod. The meetings
have been scheduled over two dates, covering the entire
Diocese with one session in the morning and one session in
the afternoon on each day. You may select whichever date is
most convenient for you. The dates are as follows:

York-Scarborough – St. Andrew, Scarborough(2:00-4:30 p.m)

The focus of the Town Hall meetings are to present the
proposed revisions to The Constitution and Canons (namely,
eliminating mandatory retirement and changes to Synod
composition) and to provide an opportunity for Synod
members to have their questions answered in a smaller
setting. The intention is to provide a full and open process for
obtaining feedback on the proposed changes before they are
presented to Diocesan Council for recommendation to Synod.
Registration and check-in will take place 30 minutes prior to
each meeting. Town Halls are open to anyone interested in

STUDIO ARTISTS OF THORNHILL
Regret to inform that there will be no Art Show & Sale this
spring due to unforeseen circumstances. However, they will
continue hosting the Sunday May 3 Coffee Hour.
HEALING AND WELLNESS MINISTRY
Pedometers
This $15 device has proven to be
effective in motivating us to be more
active. I have posted success stories
on the bulletin board. Please contact
me if you’d like to have one.
Caregivers Support Network.
Caregivers are busy people and so it has been difficult to find a
time for them to get together for support. At present, we will
not meet as a group, but will continue to see what time might
work best for people.
Healthy Living Follow-up session is scheduled for Monday
May 4 at 12:30 pm in the Reception room. Please RSVP your
attendance by April 20 and if we have enough participants, I
will request the presenters to return for an up-date.
Organ Donations. March was Kidney and Liver Disease
Awareness Month, as well as Nutrition. Please consider organ
donation and register on-line your wishes to do so. If you don’t
have a computer, you can call 1-800-263-2833.

CALLING KNITTERS
Wellspring Westerkirk House at Sunnybrook is seeking simple
knit slippers in various sizes. Wellspring provides over 53
types of programs for persons diagnosed with many types of
cancer as well as their supportive family and friends at no
charge.
When patients/families participate, especially during
inclement weather, they are encouraged to take off their
shoes at the front door and put on slippers for comfort, and to
reduce the mess in the house. The slippers are laundered after
each use, so should be made from washable wool/yarn - and
will be welcome in any colour or style. Pompoms optional!!!

OUTREACH
As of March 24, there have been nine deliveries of canned/
packaged food and personal use items to the Richmond Hill
Food Bank, All Saints Community Kitchen and Eva’s Place.
There have also been two deliveries of adult apparel to the All
Saints ‘Clothing Closet’. Thank You! for your continued interest
and support, including financial contributions to purchase food
items for Richmond Hill and All Saints. Much appreciated.

185th Off To A Good Start

It was quite appropriate for Vic Steyck, who assumed the York-Credit Valley and a former assistant curate who
leadership of the 185th anniversary committee, following spent the weekend with us at Breakfast on February 21
the sudden passing of Ross Creber, to inaugurate the when he discussed the future of the church and was
celebrations of our anniversary year on Sunday, January 4. celebrant and preacher on the following day.

Lent & Easter 2015

Wednesdays in Lent
With absence of some persons involved in Wednesdays
in Lent, we will conclude our series on April 8 when the
call of Paul will be discussed. This session will be
facilitated by John Carrington. We have been considering
the call of God on the lives of a few persons in the
biblical narrative. To date, we have discussed God’s call
of Abraham, Moses and Mary to share in God’s mission.
Toonies & Loonies for Lent
The theological underpinnings of the Exodus story
(Passover) are akin to those of the Easter story (The
Pascha). As we observe Lent, we are invited to read
excerpts from the Book of Exodus. To mark our 185th
anniversary, the Advisory Board has voted to support the
Thornhill Public School’s nutrition program as an
outreach project. As we read, we are encouraged to put
aside a “loonie” or “toonie” each day (40 days) to
support this project.
After Easter please convert your coins to a cheque or
“bills” and send them in Lent Envelope (available
starting on Palm Sunday). You may use any blank
envelope as long as you mark them “LENTEN Offering”
and include your name or envelope # so that tax receipt
can be issued.

Vestry Notes
Our Vestry meeting was convened on February 15 and
was adjourned until the spring when the audited
financial statements will be received. This delay was
beyond the control of the Wardens. Vestry made some
significant decisions, among them are the following.
Audio Visual Projection
In 2014 Vestry authorized the Churchwardens to
continue to explore the integration of video technology
into our worship and to make any temporary
installations to facilitate this process, not exceeding a
budget of $6,000. Bob Priestman and Canon Stephen
subsequently talked to a number of suppliers about
demonstration projects using monitors placed around
the church. Proposals were discussed with the Wardens.
The Churchwardens were authorized to request
quotations for the audio-visual equipment and
installation as described in the update presented and,
subject to consultation with Advisory Board, the
Churchwardens were authorized to award the contract
to the best qualified bid, based on cost, proposed
technology, support service, warranties and other
relevant considerations. The total cost of the project,
including contingencies, is not to exceed $40,000."
Subsequent to our Vestry meeting, a group of members
visited St. John's York Mills to see their setup and spoke
to the parish administrator and other persons who were
involved in the project there. They had a similar
challenge regarding their stained glass window. This was
addressed by installing two screens off centre. They gave
a strong endorsement for their supplier, who has also
been recommended by a couple of other churches.
Following this visit and a look at our sanctuary it is
believed that four monitors can be tastefully installed in
the sanctuary and the two wings (by the chapel and
pulpit). We will invite companies to consider our issues
and then submit proposals with suggestions (and costs)
as to how we can proceed. The congregation will be
given an update in June.
Looking to the Future
There was a presentation “Looking to the Future” – What
then shall we Do? Ministry after 185 years”. This arose
out of the conversations in the Fall. The presentation
included the “Back History” of what Holy Trinity has
done over the past 185 years realizing that we have gone
from a rural community to an extension of Toronto – an
area far too expensive for our children to live.

Subsequently, as a result of the growth and change of
demographics of the area, our church is facing significant
challenge.
It was noted that a Missional Church goes out to the
community to find out what God is already up to and to
help God along. It was further noted that we need to
continue build relationships with people in our
community. We are currently involved in several
initiatives including the Out of the Cold program and
mentoring at Holy Trinity School. We have begun
conversations with York Regional Police and the United
Way.
Members were invited to speak of their “passions” and
to consider how these match the needs of our
community. It was suggested that we implement one to
two projects in 2015. Our work continues.
Climate Change
The Archbishop of our Diocese, in his letter to Vestries,
asked each parish to consider passing motions at vestry
to take some local action to address climate change and
to call on provincial or federal governments to
implement effective policy to reduce greenhouse gas
emissions and combat ongoing climate change. The
Advisory board considered this request and suggested
possible actions, and recommended the following
motion which was approved by Vestry:
“That the parish supports the Diocese’s advocacy at the
provincial and federal government level for responsible
and effective policy on climate change. Furthermore,
that the Advisory Board investigates opportunities and
considers suggestions from parishioners to reduce our
local carbon footprint over the next year, and reports on
results and recommendations for future action to the
2016 vestry.”
Stephen Law has agreed to undertake the leadership of
this initiative. Iverson Grimes, Deputy Warden, will be
the Wardens’ liaison on this initiative

The nature of our worship was discussed and it was
agreed that a committee will be established to evaluate
our current worship experience and make
recommendations of improvement.

The Canon’s Column
I began my report to vestry by
saying that “I believe that the
year 2015 will prove to be one of
the more exciting years in our
parish community since our
foundation in 1830.” Our recent
Vestry Meeting seem to have
echoed that statement by making
some significant decisions.
The Wardens were given clear
direction and financial mandate to
get complete the much discussed
audio visual project intended to enhance worship
experience! Vestry also responded favourable to a
request from Archbishop Colin Johnson regarding
“Climate Change”! There was support for a critical
evaluation be done of our main service on Sunday
mornings! There is a commitment to engage in a ministry
that will take us into the future!
To summarise, “something good is happening here”!
Our 185th anniversary is off to a good start! My thanks
are again tendered to our hardworking anniversary
committee as they continue to enable us to “celebrate
our past and embrace our future”. Elsewhere in this
newsletter you will be reminded of the upcoming events.
Every event is a highlight. The first half of the year will
climax in May with the visit of Archbishop Colin Johnson
and the Community Day with Canon Bob Grisdale.
Please invite your children, many of whom grew up with
Canon Bob, grandchildren and friends to join you in these
celebrations. Encourage them to come out on
Community Day (May 31) which is also the Feast of The
Holy Trinity.
I also invite you to come out and help us host some
visitors over the next nine months.
Visits by Two Organisations
The Toronto branch of the ruling parting of the
government of Barbados, The Democratic Labour Party,
will be celebrating the 60th anniversary of the foundation
of the party in April. As branches at home and in other
countries share in this celebration, the Toronto chapter is
planning to worship with us on April 26 at the 10:00 a.m.
service. Last June, the Alexandra School Old Scholars
Association of Barbados (Toronto) joined us at worship to
celebrate their school`s 120th year Anniversary. They will
be coming to us on May 31, for their annual corporate
worship.

Prison Ministry Sunday
For the past two years the First Sunday of May was set
aside in our parish for an annual Day of Observance of
The Prison Ministry. The focus of the service is on the
ministry to prisoners, chaplains, staff, and all who are
engaged in this work. This year, I have invited Mr.
MacDonald Boyce, a faithful Anglican (Lay Reader) and a
retired Manager in the Ministry of Correctional Services
to be our guest speaker on May 3 at 10:00 a.m.
Holy Trinity School Concert
On Sunday, March 1, under the direction of Ms. Danielle
Stock, several students of the Holy Trinity School blessed
us with their music, drumming and singing. The
comments afterwards were quite affirming of their
musical offerings and there was satisfaction all around.
Ms. Stock offered to present a concert by the students of
the Holy Trinity School in the spring. The concert will be
on Sunday, April 26 at 4:00 p.m. All details were not
confirmed at press time. Look out for more information
in the upcoming edition of Trinity Mail and on our
website and Facebook page.
Sabbath Leave
I was granted permission to take a Sabbath leave in
September 2011. However, following my appointment as
Incumbent in August 2011, I deferred this leave until a
more appropriate time. With the support of the Wardens
and the Area Bishop, I will be away from June 1 until
September 30.
During this time The Rev. Paul
Walker will serve as Priest-in-
Charge. Fr. Paul is no stranger to
Holy Trinity, he has been supply
priest for us on several occasions
in the past. The Churchwardens
made provision in our 2014 and
2015 budgets for a supply priest to
provide six (6) units per week for
the period.

serving meals including clean-up, providing medical care & company, entertainment, etc.

The Eva Rea Millennium Fund & Bursary
Eva Rea and her husband moved to Thornhill in
1976 but sadly he passed away before they
had moved into their new home.
Eva Rea was an active member of Holy Trinity and was
very involved with many aspects of the church. Upon her
death, Eva left a considerable, undesignated bequest to
the church and this resulted in the formation of the Eva
Rea Millennium Fund.
The fund comprises the initial bequest from Eva and sub-
sequently, a portion of all other undesignated bequests
received by Holy Trinity Church.
Although Eva had no family of her own, she loved chil-
dren. In recognition of Eva Rea’s ongoing interest and
support of our parish youth, part of the income of the
Millennium Fund is annually awarded as an Educational
Bursary.
The Eva Rea Millennium Bursary is available to all active
parishioners of Holy Trinity Church who feel that such a
bursary could aid them in pursuing further education.
Programs that qualify are not solely limited to traditional
educational institutions such as college and universitiy,
but extend to those students, and families, who may be
having difficulty financing music lessons for example, or
have special need, such as medical expenses due to a
disability. You may apply if you are enrolled full time or
part-time.
To qualify you must be an active member of Holy Trinity
Church. You also must be a student, which by definition
is an individual under the age of 25 at the time that the
course of study commences.
If you would like to get more information about the Eva
Rea Bursary and the application process, please join the
committee in the auditorium for a “Meet & Greet” on
Sunday March 29, 2015 after the 10:00 a.m. service.

Footlights from page 1
The presentation will feature two of their most popular
sketches of the past, “The Waiting Room” and “Dinner
For One”. Back by popular demand will be a musical
treat featuring Stephanie Birrell. Your $15 ticket
includes cheese, assorted nibbles, coffee/tea and a
chance to mingle. Tickets are on sale on Sundays or by

are available to purchase.
Photo Directory. We have now completed two photo
sessions. Approximately 70 families and/individuals have
made use of this opportunity to be a part of this
important moment in our history. The final sessions will
be held on April 8 and 11. Appointments may be made
by registration on the church’s website or by contacting
Wendy Locke at 905 881 6478. The directory will be
published in the Fall.
Anniversary Lecture. Danielle Terbenche, a member of
Cemetery Committee, will present a Breakfast Lecture
on Saturday, April 25 at 9:30 a.m. The lecture is entitled
“The financial challenges of Rev. George Mortimer and
Rev. Dominick Blake, the first rectors of Holy Trinity
Anglican Church, Thornhill (1832-1844; 1844-1859)”.
Freewill donations will be accepted.
Community Day. A significant moment in the
anniversary year will be our community day on Sunday,
May 31, The Feast of The Holy Trinity. The guest
preacher with be Canon Bob Grisdale who was
Incumbent from 1976-1991, a period many view as the
“glory years” of Holy Trinity in the post war era.

An invitation has been sent to our political
representatives and will be extended to our wider
Thornhill community. A special invitation is extended to
those who were children, youth and young adults during
this time.
Following the service there will be a community BBQ
which will be followed by a memorial service in the Holy
Trinity Cemetery and a guided tour of the cemetery. In

Healing & Wellness Ministry
Spring has finally arrived! Our pedometer promotion to
encourage people to be active has been a great success.
The first order of 25 pieces was sold by Christmas and we
recently placed an order for 15. If anyone is still interest-
ed, let me know. I am inviting those who are using the
pedometer to write a brief testimony, for the next Trinity
News, on how it helped them become more active. We
can inspire one another.
March is Nutrition Month and nutrition is another im-
portant factor, along with exercise, for promoting and
maintaining good health. Cathy Pearson has provided
fact sheets on various nutrition aspects. I have posted
some on the bulletin board and will have copies available
at the

Wednesday March 18 10:30 a.m.
Judith Wahl (solicitor) will speak to us about CCAC
(Community Care Access Centre) and our recourse when
we have disagreements with them. Free admission but

Support Group. If you are interested please let me know
your availability. This group meets bi-monthly and is a

HAPPY 185th ANNIVERSARY!
As we celebrate the 185th anniversary of Holy Trinity
Church it is with much appreciation and thanksgiving
that we reflect upon all those who have gone before us.
It has been the faith and dedication of the parishioners
and spiritual leaders that have allowed us to continue to
worship and to serve the community in this beautiful,
historic church.
THE FIRST DEDICATION OF TRINITY CHURCH
Trinity Church, as it was formerly named, was construct-
ed at its first location, on the west side of Yonge Street at
the top of the hill, opposite Royal Orchard Boulevard.
Prior to that, however, services were held in the Cober
schoolhouse, once located on the north-west corner of
Yonge Street and Uplands Avenue. This location then
became the site of Langstaff Public School, and later the
school building was extended and renamed Uplands
School. It is currently used for the teaching of Adult Eng-
lish As A Second Language classes.
In 1828 Thornhill was one of several places selected by
Dr. John Strachan, Archdeacon of York, later the first
Bishop of Toronto, to receive the ministrations of theolo-
gy professors and divinity students who conducted reg-
ular services. When Trinity Church was completed, Arch-
deacon Strachan himself came north for the dedication,
which took place on February 28, 1830.

Mary O'Brien, who was married to Captain Edmund
O'Brien, a half-pay officer in the British army, was an ear-
ly parishioner who wrote what has become an invaluable
diary. This treasured source, now located in the Archives
of Ontario, includes descriptions of early days in Thorn-
hill. The following excerpt describes the dedication of
the church.
"We had service in the morning in our new church. Dr.
Strachan came out expressly to officiate and read for the
First Lesson the Dedication of the Temple. He preached
for an hour and a half a sermon which, if not perfect as a
composition, was so good in matter and feeling that
most of the party left the church with the most charitable
feelings towards the preacher."
"It chanced that the Methodist preacher who was ex-
pected at a neighbouring place of meeting came late,
and his congregation had agreed to adjourn to our
church. On arriving, he determined to follow them, and
thus we had a very numerous assembly."

Michael Ball, another former parishioner whose family
were longtime, dedicated members of our church. Mi-
chael sent me a fascinating 1937 newspaper excerpt
about the 107th anniversary of the church. The article
refers to an old hourglass in our church that was

golden staff and enter the Kingdom.' The
pilot goes into Heaven with his robe and
staff.
Next, it's the priest's turn. He stands erect
and booms out, 'I am Father Bob, pastor of
Saint Mary's for the last 43 years.'
Saint Peter consults his list. He says to the
priest, 'Take this cotton robe and wooden
staff and enter the Kingdom.
