2. Unit Topic: Combatives and Self-Defense 3. Grade Level and Course: 7-8th grade, High School, Physical Education 4. CA Content Standards: Grade 10 a. 1.4 Explain and demonstrate advanced offensive, defensive, and transition strategies and tactics in combative, gymnastic/tumbling, and team activities. b. 1.6 Evaluate the relationships of physical, emotional, and cognitive factors affecting individual and team performance. c. 1.10 Analyze situations to determine appropriate strategies to use in combative, gymnastic/tumbling, and team activities. d. 3.3 Evaluate the psychological benefits derived from regular participation in physical activity. e. 3.8 Identify leadership skills, perform planned leadership assignments, and assume spontaneous leadership roles. 5. Driving Question: How can you use self-defense strategies to protect yourself and the agitator? 6. Project Summary: Students will come together in groups and organize the self-defense techniques they learned to create an encounter that utilizes those techniques to showing how the students can diffuse the situation. Techniques possible may include actual combative skills, social encounter techniques, and outdoor safety strategies. 7. Final Products: Encounter/Altercation Resolution Flow Chart, Encounter Simulation Presentation. 8. How Student Products will be Assessed: Scoring guide for graphic organizer, and team presentation.
