MOBY DICK (2018)

GRADE A - B

Based on the novel Moby Dick by Herman Melville, the story is about one man’s quest to kill a gigantic white
whale called Moby Dick. A challenge is to confront Captain Ahab’s obsession to kill Moby Dick which is faced by
Starbuck.

Captain Ahab was only focusing on his revenge to kill Moby Dick because it took his leg. Starbuck was the only
one who questioned Captain Ahab’s terrible decision. He thought it was wrong to go after Moby Dick for revenge. He
always reminded the captain on the objective of their jorney although the captain was angry at him. He just wanted
to focus more on getting the whale oil for money, not revenge. He was also the only one who oppesed Captain Ahab
openly in front of everyone. He spoke up for the crew and warned Captain Ahab even though the captain was
pointing the gun at him. Being a responsible crew, Starbuck insisted they stop the ship to avoid losing all the whale
oil. He even challenged Captain Ahab when the captain wanted to continue to pursue the whale instead of replacing
the leaking barrels. The whale oil was so important because they all need that for money to provide for their families
back home. He was feeling so upset when Captain Ahab thew away the map into the ocean because no ship can sail
without it. At one point, he thought of killing Captain Ahab because he felt that the captain was endengering their
lives. However, he didn’t do it as he was still loyal to Captain Ahab although he disagreed with him. Starbuck even
cried when Captain Ahab made peace with him before the last battle with Moby Dick.

In conclusion, I think the challenge to confront Captain Ahab’s obsession to kill Moby Dick which is faced by
Starbuck really shows that Starbuck is indeed a great whaler and can be considered as the hero in this novel.
