PICKLEBALL STUDY GUIDE

Serve
-Serve must be underhand and the paddle must be contacted below the waist. The server
must hit the ball in the air
-Serve is made diagonally cross court and must clear the non-volley zone and land in the
service box
-For our class, you get one redo serve for every serve attempt that you make
-If the score is even, serve from the right box. If the score is odd, serve from the left box.
Start of Game
-Begin with rock, paper, scissors to see who serves first
Scoring
-A team can only score points when serving
-A player who is serving keeps serving unless their team makes a fault
-Partners switch serving boxes only after scoring
Volley
-To volley means to hit the ball out of the air
-All volleying must be done with the players feet behind the non-volley line
-If a player goes inside the non-volley zone, they must let the ball bounce (they cannot hit the

ball out of the air)

Double Bounce Rule
-Each team must play their first shot off of the bounce. After the two bounces have occurred,
the ball can be volleyed or played off the bounce
-After the serve=receiving team lets it bounce, serving team lets it bounce, and then can hit
out of the air (on the 4th hit)
Fault
-hitting the ball out of bounds
-not clearing the net on the serve
-not serving it into the correct box after your redo serve
-stepping into the non-volley zone and volleying the ball
-not following the double bounce rule
