COMMON LABORATORY APPARATUS

1. Bunsen Burner is a common piece of laboratory equipment

that produces a single open gas flame, which is used for heating, sterilization,
and combustion.

2. Graduated cylinder is a common piece of laboratory

equipment used to measure the volume of a liquid. It has a narrow cylindrical
shape. Each marked line on the graduated cylinder represents the amount of
liquid that has been measured.

3. Stirring Rod is a piece of laboratory equipment used to mix

chemicals and liquids for laboratory purposes.

4. Test tube rack pieces of equipment that are

used to hold upright multiple test tubes at the same time.

5. Wire Gauze is a sheet of thin metal that has

net-like patterns or a wire mesh. Wire gauze is placed on the support ring that is
attached to the retort stand between the Bunsen burner and the glassware to
support the beakers, flasks or other glassware during heating.

6. Beaker is a generally cylindrical container with a flat

bottom. Most also have a small spout to aid pouring, as shown in the picture.
Beakers are available in a wide range of sizes, from one milliliter up to several
liters.
7.

8. Ring Stand sometimes called a clamp stand or a ring stand, is a

piece of scientific equipment, clamps can be attached to hold other pieces of
equipment.

9. Buret Used for dispensing an accurate volume of a liquid.

10. Beaker tongs are used to handle hot beakers.

Typical beaker tongs can grab beakers of any size and can also be used to move
other objects, such as cans

11. Evaporating Dish Used to heat liquids for

evaporation.

12. Clay Triangle Used to support a crucible during

heating.

13. Crucible Tongs Used to hold crucibles.

14. Erlenmeyer Flask Used to hold and mix chemicals. The small
neck is to facilitate mixing without spilling.

15. Forceps Used to pick up or hold small objects.

16. Laboratory Coat is a knee-length overcoat/smock

worn by professionals in the medical field or by those involved in laboratory work.
The coat protects their street clothes and serves as a simple uniform.

17. Lab funnel is just like any other funnel except that it was
designed to be used in a laboratory setting.

18. Volumetric flask is a round flask with a

long neck and flat bottom. It is used to measure an exact volume of liquid.

19. Droppers these are small glass tubes with

narrow tips on one end and a rubber bulb on the other. They suck up liquid that
can then be squeezed out in small drops. These can be used to add an indicator
to a solution about to be titrated.

20. Safety goggles are required wear in all

chemistry labs. Not wearing them puts you in danger of eye irritation and possibly
blindness in the case of an accident. A small droplet of acid could splash out of
the container at any time. Better safe than permanently blinded!
