Questions 16 to 25
Read the following page from a leaflet about bicycles and answer the questions that follow.

WHEEL LOVE
Our country has great roads and parks. It’s part of the reason why more Malaysians are getting on
their bikes. Here is why you should too!

Do you know that cycling does wonders to yourself? You will discover a new you once you start
cycling. Before you start, invest in a bicycle that best fits you. Ask yourself what kind of cycling you
plan to do and there is a bicycle to cater for your need.

A recumbent bike is great for hobbyist and is best used on flat roads only. If you are the
adventurous kind, then the mountain bike is the best as it has all the bells and whistles to tackle varied
terrain and slopes.

If you have developed road confidence and fancy leisurely long distance rides with an element of
sightseeing, the touring bike is the best as it is designed for comfort. On the other hand, an every day
bike will be the cruiser bike which you can use to nip around the neighbourhood or commuting within
the city.

Who knows, you might have set eyes on serious cycling competition in the stadium. Then, fixed
gear bike will be your choice.

Any doubts? WHEEL LOVE is here to help you!

HOW TO STAY SAFE ON TWO WHEELS

 Always wear a cycling helmet that has been adjusted to fit your head
and is secured tightly.
 Don bright coloured clothing and reflective stripes so you are noticed
in low light conditions.
 Get your bicycle fitted with a light on the front, a hazard light at the
back and reflectors on the wheels
 Carry a water bottle to stay hydrated at all times. For easy access, get a
water bottle cage mounted on the bicycle frame
 Ride in a single file when on roads open to motorised traffic
 Always adhere to traffic light signals, traffic signs and road markings.

Questions 16 to 20

Raj is going on a bike tour. Using words from the leaflet given, complete his blog entry below. Use no
more than three words for each blank.

RAJ’S BLOG
March 20, 2018 – Bike Tour

I went on my first bike tour last Sunday. Luckily, I was advised by WHEEL LOVE to get a
___________________________ (16) which was of great comfort and I could leisurely tour the
countryside. Luckily, I did not buy a ___________________________ (17) as our sightseeing did
not include trekking through the hilly jungles. I would also consider getting a
___________________________ (18) to help with the errands at home and save on fuel. A
___________________________ (19) is definitely a no for me as I am not interested in velodrome
competitions. Neither would I invest in a ___________________________ (20) as the place I stay
is quite hilly.

[Time suggested : 50 minutes]
Questions 26 to 31 are based on the following passage.
1 All kinds of celebrations are going on around the world to create awareness
about tigers. Unfortunately, deep in the Malayan rainforest, there are no
celebrations. It is just another day as the future of my tribe and fellow forest
dwellers seem grim.
2 I wanted to make my day a bit cheerful by hoping to have a sambar deer for 5
lunch but I have not spotted one in weeks. I have to settle for a goat which isn’t a
favourite dish on a festive day in the jungle. As I finish my simple meal and survey
the jungle around me, a shiver runs down my spine when I see the near emptiness of
my surroundings. It makes me think how one species is driving biodiversity loss at
an unprecedented rate. Man’s reckless actions are leaving devastating impacts on 10
this fragile planet.
3 My tribe, the iconic Malayan Tiger that is known as king of the tropical jungle,
is fast disappearing along with the other forest dwellers. In fact, in my lifetime I
have seen the Sumatran rhinoceros fade into extinction in the Malayan peninsula. I
have been told that during my forefathers’ era, we too had the Javan rhinoceros but 15
they were driven to extinction in the 1930s by merciless game hunting when this
land was ruled by people from a far-off country.
4 The fate of the Sumatran rhino is a sad story. It evokes many emotions in me –
anger, sadness, sense of loss and depression. They were driven to extinction
probably because of change in land use, poaching and lack of knowledge. As I 20
reminisce about my Javan and Sumatran rhino friends, the fate of my own tribe
comes to my mind. In fact, I have just come back after roaming the forest and it’s
scary that I have not met any of my buddies for quite a while. I hope they are fine.
5 We, tigers have been hunted by man relentlessly. We are also being poached
mercilessly for our body parts which are being processed into luxury decorative 25
items and medicinal remedies.
6 My wise grandfather told me that in the 1970s there were about 3,000 of us
gracefully roaming in the Malayan peninsula. Now, only 10 percent of that number
remains. If there is no action taken by the relevant authorities to save us, I am
certain my tribe will be at the brink of extinction in peninsular Malaysia by 2030. I 30
pray this does not happen.
7 The forest spirit has urged me to be optimistic on this auspicious day. I am sure
since Malaysia’s football team is named after us and one prominent bank also uses
us on their logo, Malaysians will not let us fade from this land. I am not being self-
centred in asserting the need to save my tribe. We, tigers are an umbrella species. 35
Saving us saves biodiversity, the ecosystem and all my fellow forest dwellers. This
SULIT 1119/2

in return ensures the continued ecosystem services which man heavily relies on for
their well-being and material progress. I hope man realises we are all connected in
this fragile web of life and that conservation is development too.
8 I end this lengthy roar by extending my appreciation for the continued efforts 40
taken by the government, NGO’s and other stakeholders in trying to save us and the
flora and fauna of this beautiful country. On behalf of my tribe, I salute all of you. It
is our hope that we will continue to roam this land forever. Happy Tiger’s Day!

32 Read the poem below and answer the questions that follow.

The Charge of the Light Brigade

Half a league, half a league,

Half a league onward,
All in the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.
“Forward, the Light Brigade!
Charge for the guns!” he said.
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.

“Forward, the Light Brigade!”

Was there a man dismayed?
Not though the soldier knew
Someone had blundered.
Theirs not to make reply,
Theirs not to reason why,
Theirs but to do and die.
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.

Cannon to right of them,

Cannon to left of them,
Cannon in front of them
Volleyed and thundered;
Stormed at with shot and shell,
Boldly they rode and well,
Into the jaws of Death,
Into the mouth of Hell
Rode the six hundred.
