Intro to Exceptional Final Project

Grade:9-10
Subject: High school math, Algebra

Concept being taught: FOILing

Domain: Polynomials and Rational Expressions

Cluster: Perform Arithmetic Operations on Polynomials

Standards:
Understand that polynomials form a system analogous to the integers, namely, they
are closed under the operations of addition subtraction, and multiplication; add,
subtract, and multiply polynomials.

Domain: Reasoning with Equations and Inequalities

Cluster: Understand solving equations as a process of reasoning and explain the
reasoning
Standard: Explain each step in solving a simple equation as following from the
equality of numbers asserted at the previous step, starting from the assumption that
the original equation has a solution. Construct a viable argument to justify a solution
method.

Topic: The FOIL method in distributing binomials (First, outer, inner, last)
Content Taught: Students will learn to multiply two binomials, using the foil method,
to form a polynomial. Next students will combine like terms correctly.
Goals: To have students understand the FOIL method and successfully use it to
expand two binomials into a polynomial.

Objectives: Students will be able to recognize when using the FOIL method is
necessary. Students will understand the fundamentals of the FOIL method and will
use it to distribute binomials. Students will be able to FOIL the correct terms in the
correct order.

Teaching methods: I will be teaching the lesson first in a lecture style and then I
will invite different students to the board to work out problems. I will split the class
into four groups and play a game with them. Each group will work to solve the
problem and the first group to solve it will earn a point. First group to ten is the
winner.

Description of Students in Class: This general education class consists of 25 ninth

graders. Ten have IEP’s, four are gifted, two have physical handicaps, and one is
autistic. Many of the students have also been moved around classes because of
behavioral problems. They can be challenging but I am willing to work with them to
the best of my abilities.
Accommodations: I know my students very well by know and know which ones
struggle learning concepts and which ones learn things very easily. After lecturing
on how to FOIL I will split the class into four groups, making sure each group has a
few students that understand it and a few students who might still be struggling.
During class I will give printed notes to those students who benefit from it and
cannot keep up with the lecture otherwise. The two students who have physical
handicaps will be seated near the front so to not be in the way of other students and
bring less attention to them. Each group will have a chance to write and answer on
the board if they answer a question correctly. Only one student will need to do this
so those who cannot physically make it to the board will not have to worry about
moving.

Lesson Plan: Desks will be in four groups of 6 before students come in. Students
will have assigned seats for todays class. There will be nametags on the desk and the
students will be able to find their desk when they come in.

1. I will lecture for the first 20 minutes of class including a few examples of how
to FOIL with different types of problems.
2. Move in to the game part of the class.
3. Explain how the game is going to work, let students know that they will be
working together as a team to figure out the problem and the first one to
come to an answer will go to the board and write the correct answer for the
rest of the class to see.
4. This game will last 25 minutes or as long as time permits till the end of class.
5. The first group to get to ten points will receive a prize.
6. The point of this exercise is to let the students help each other. Those who
understand the concept will help those who are struggling. This is why they
are in specific groups.
7. Homework for tonight will be many different problems on FOILing.

Academic Language: Students will need to understand what the following words
mean: FOIL, Binomial, polynomial, combining like terms.

Assessment Method: I will be gaging the understanding of the material through the
game played at the end of the class period along with the homework I will assign for
the same night. Each new problem of the game I will observe a different group and
see how well they are working together and who is struggling and who has
understood the material. The next day we will go over the homework and see which
problems were more difficult than others and where the students are still struggling
for this lesson. For the students who are still struggling I will provide extra practice
as well as extra teaching and learning of the lesson.
