Rosebrook a huge
loss for Carter family
HORSHAM’S Donald Carter has described
the destruction of the historic Rosebrook
homestead at Wartook as a huge loss for
his family and the Wimmera.
The homestead and National Trust-
classified woolshed were gutted by the
Grampians fire last week.
Mr Carter said Phillip Rose built the
homestead in about 1843.
The Carter family bought it from Mr
Rose in 1853.
Mr Carter grew up in the homestead.
“I was the fifth-generation and lived there
between 1939 and 1964,” he said.
He said seventh-generation Carters Jim
and Jenny Carter now owned the property.
Mr Carter said in the mid-1950s, his
father completely renovated the property.

“It originally had three gables, all with
hips and valleys in between and they used
to leak like sieves,” he said.
“The place had a lucky let-off in 1945 – it
got very close to being burnt down then.”
Mr Carter said the homestead contained
many historical items, including a series
of oil paintings of the Carter generations.
“The woolshed hadn’t been used for
many years and it was destroyed,” he said.
“The original old carriage shed and stable
was on the driveway on the way in and it
had been converted into a machinery shed
and other things and it’s all gone.
“There were two pine tree driveways and
I’m not sure if they’ll survive.
“It’s a big loss, huge.”
