EEL3086 Tutorial – 1

Q1- What are TSM, PS, and PSM in Time-delay Over Current Relay?

Q2- A potential transformer rated 14,400/115 V and a CT rated 75/5 A are used to measure
the voltage and current in a transmission line. If the voltmeter indicates 111 V and the
ammeter reads 3 A, calculate the voltage and current in the line.

Q3- Determine the time of operation of a 5 A, 3 seconds overcurrent relay having a current
setting of 125% and a time setting multiplier of 0.6 connected to supply circuit through a
400/5 CT when the circuit carries a fault current of 4000 A. Use the curve shown in
Figure- Q3.

Q4- A CT has a rating of 50 VA, 400/5 A, 36 kV, 50 Hz. It is connected into an ac line,
having a line-to-nutral voltage of 14.4 kV. The ammeter, relays, and connecting wires on the
secondary side posses a total impedance (burden) of 1.2 Ω. If the transmission line current is
280 A, calculate
a. The sec current
b. The voltage across the sec terminals
c. The voltage drop across the primary

Q5- A circuit breaker equipped with current transformer having a ratio of 600:5 is protecting a
4.16-kV distribution feeder. The characteristics curves of ABB-Westinghouse’s CO-7 relay
used are shown in Fig. The relay is to operate when the load current on the feeder is 500A. In
addition, the available short-circuit current is 5000A at the breaker location and 2000 A at the
far end of the circuit. Determine
a. the appropriate tap setting required
b. required time dial setting (TSM or TMS) to allow a time delay of 0.7 sec at maximum
fault current levels
c. under certain condition if the secondary current of CT is 8 A and time dial setting is
0.5, what is the time of operation of the relay?
