Subject: English Grammar

Topic: Greek Mythology

Sub-topic: Comprehension

Time: 40 minutes

Materials: chart, vocabulary list, markers, comprehension passage, question sheet.

Previous Knowledge: Students have read and answered questions with regards to
comprehension passages.

Objectives: Through discussion and group activities, students will be able to:

1. Analyze the comprehension passage “Echo and Narcissus in Greek Mythology”.

2. Modify certain parts of the passage to make it more interesting.

3. Appreciate the use of reading, as a means for building on vocabulary skills.

Concept:Greek mythology is the body of myths and legends belonging to the ancient
Greeks concerning their Gods and Heroes, the nature of the world, and the origins or
significances of their ritual practices. Eg Echo and Narcissus, Rhea and Cronus.

3. Summarize events

Attitudes: Appreciate the use of new words to increase vocabulary.

Introduction:

1. Students will be presented with the topic of the lesson “ Echo and Narcissus in
Greek Mythology”. Teacher will provide a chart with the KWL strategy on it.

2. Teacher will randomly ask students what they know about the topic presented.
Students will write their responses on the chart, with a marker provided.

3. After getting a minimum of 3 responses, the teacher will ask the students that they
want to know about the topic. Some students will also be asked to write their
responses on the chart.

4. Teacher will explain that the comprehension passage that the class will read will
help them to answer some of the questions that they wrote on the “what I want to
know” column.

Development:

1. Students will be given a list of vocabulary words and will be asked to look up some
of the meanings in their dictionaries.

2. Teacher will then give the comprehension passage to the students and read the
passage to them, making pauses where necessary.

3. Students will be placed in groups with the use color coded wooden sticks. Groups
will be given a set of questions to answer. They will have 15 minutes to answer the
questions.

4. Teacher will review the answers to the question as a whole class.

Conclusion: Teacher will review the lesson with the class by filling in the last section of
the KWL chart “what I have learnt”. Teacher will tell students that the other questions that
they have concerning Greek Mythology might be answered as the unit is taught further on.

Extended Activity: Students will be asked to look for the meaning of the 15 vocabulary
words they were provided with and to write a sentence using each of the words.
