VIVITROL® FACT SHEET

 Vivitrol® is an extended-release injectable medication that

blocks the effect (or the high) from heroin (and other opioids)
that is given every 28 days.

 The Vivitrol® pilot program kicked off on June 13, 2016 at the
Orange County Jail in conjunction with Florida Alcohol and Drug
Abuse Association (FADAA) community providers.

 Screening is completed on everyone coming into the jail who

self admits to heroin use, or who tests positive and undergoes
detox.

 The pilot program consists of a screening to determine

eligibility, an evaluation to see if the inmate meets clinical
criteria, some lab work to ensure he or she is healthy enough to
go through the program, and an initial injection of Vivitrol® prior
to being released from jail.

 The pilot program is voluntary, and inmates who self-identify as

users are offered the opportunity to receive the injection.

 Inmates who participate receive follow-up care managed by

Florida Alcohol and Drug Abuse Association providers.

 The jail also offers Naloxone, a prescription medication that can

reverse the effects of an opioid (including heroin) overdose if
given in time. If inmates would like to receive the drug, it will be
placed in their property prior to release with overdose
prevention information.

 The Vivitrol® pilot program is paid for with state funding.

 The Vivitrol® pilot program is an outcome of the Orange County

Heroin Task Force.
