MFT Circular Disc Module Cd9
MFT Circular Disc Module Cd9
MFT Circular Disc Module Cd9
The main idea for this circular flow was to reach a steady and defined flow situation at every point of the mem-
brane surface by leading the feed flow in circular direction through a stack of discs with membrane – cushions
placed in between (table 1).
The new outstanding fluid form of CD – Module has the following profits :
• Avoidance of frequent sharp reverse turns of 180° (in conventional disc modules 2 turns per plate level)
• Defined flow in the complete membrane stack,
• Defined velocity without slow down or accelerating sections
• Avoidance of sections with low velocity (danger of fouling),
• In all parts diminished pressure losses at higher velocities!

The technical realisation of this kind of flow can be obtained by the combination of discs and membranes,
which has been patented by mft (DE 19536560; EC Patent 96931010.1-1213; USA Patent 5,925,247).
Table 2 shows the disc and the principal way of stacking the membrane cushions in between the discs.
The to be separated medium cross flows the membrane cushion on both sides in the cut between the mem-
brane surface and the support plate (carrier disc). The diversion of the flow fluid from one level to the next
happens in a flat ramp with an angle of declination of 35°. By this fluid guidance the velocity does not change.
The ramp of the support plates fit together so that the flow way is guided without hamper from one disc to the
next.
The permeate passes the membrane into the membrane cushion and is led off into the middle of the module.

Comparison of the flow configurations of different membrane modules
The following table compares the flow parameters of different membrane modules:

Pressure drop per m² 0,02 bar/m² 0,35 bar/m² 0,9 bar/m² 0,2 bar/m²

Comparing the CD- module with spiral wounded modules it become obvious that the spiral wound modules
are less expensive but cannot be used specially in waste water applications with high scaling or biofouling
potentials.
By reason of the open flow channel and the high flow speed (Reynolds number), tubular modules do not
block as much as spiral wounded elements. Therefore they can be operated in problematic fluids. Compared
with the CD - module tubular modules are more space consuming (because of their low packing density) and
suffer under the high energy consumption because of the necessary high feed volumes.
Disc modules in their optimised construction as CD - module combine the advantage of the open channel
technique with the high membrane packing density (density rises factor 5 against tubular modules). The very
low energy demand because of the optimised and lower feed volume. In comparison to the other disc mod-
ules the CD – modules avoid the sharp 180° turns, have a continuos flow velocity, don’t change the diameter
of the channel and have therefore a drastically reduced pressure loss over the module.

The variation of the speed on each circular route is low (ca. +/- 10%)
Another special quality of circular flow is the secondary flow in a tube loop (table 6) .

To realise the different applications in membrane technique, two variants of discs have been developed. They
are different in their size of the flow channel. The modules in their different applications which mft can offer
are shown in the following tables:

Applications of the CD – Module
The application of the CD – Module lies mainly in Waster Water or Product Concentration where you have to
cope with blocking and fouling substances in the water or product. As an example a 3 staged waste water
application is shown in the below schematic graphic.
