Holy God, creator of light and giver of goodness, your voice moves over
the waters. Immerse us in your grace, and transform us by your Spirit, that
we may follow after your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives
and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
 PRAYER OF THE DAY

Let us pray. Almighty God, you anointed Jesus at his baptism with the Holy
Spirit and revealed him as your beloved Son. Keep all who are born of

called children of God, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who

A MESSAGE FOR OUR CHILDREN

FIRST READING: Isaiah 43:1-7

Near the end of Israel’s exile in Babylon, God promises to bring them
home. They need no longer be afraid, because the one who formed, created,
and called them by name now redeems them from all their enemies. God
declares them precious and honored, and God loves them.

he who created you, O Jacob,

he who formed you, O Israel:
Do not fear, for I have redeemed you;
I have called you by name, you are mine.

When you pass through the waters, I will be with you;

SECOND READING Acts 8:14-17
Peter and John are sent to support the new Christians in Samaria, a group
that was recently baptized after hearing the good news of Christ through
the preaching of Philip. Here the Samaritans receive the gift of the Holy
Spirit in the laying on of hands.

Now when the apostles at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the
word of God, they sent Peter and John to them. 15The two went down and
prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit 16(for as yet the
Spirit had not come upon any of them; they had only been baptized in the
name of the Lord Jesus). 17Then Peter and John laid their hands on them,
and they received the Holy Spirit.

GOSPEL: Luke 3:15-17, 21-22
As the Gospel is announced, worshippers are invited to trace a cross upon
their forehead, then over their lips, and then over their hearts, silently
praying, “May the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ be ever on my mind, on
my lips, and in my heart.”
The holy gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Luke.
Glory to you, O Lord.
The reading opens with questions about the identity of the Messiah. John
the Baptist insists that he is not the Messiah; instead he points ahead to one
who is coming. And whether the voice of God was heard by all or only by
Jesus, God settles the matter: Jesus is God’s beloved Son.

As the people were filled with expectation, and all were questioning in
their hearts concerning John, whether he might be the Messiah, 16John
answered all of them by saying, “I baptize you with water; but one who is
more powerful than I is coming; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his
sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 17His winnowing
fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into
his granary; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.”

Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been
baptized and was praying, the heaven was opened, 22and the Holy Spirit
descended upon him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from
heaven, “You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.”

HOLY BAPTISM
In Holy Baptism our gracious heavenly Father frees us from sin and death
once and for all by joining us to the death and resurrection of our Lord
Jesus Christ. We are born children of a fallen humanity; by water and the
Holy Spirit we are reborn children of God and made members of the
church, the body of Christ. Living with Christ and in the communion of
saints, we grow in faith, love, and obedience to the will of God.

Called by the Holy Spirit, trusting in the grace and love of God, do you
desire to have Samantha baptized into Christ?

becoming a member of Trinity Lutheran Church?

to live with Samantha among God's faithful people,

sin, and confess the faith of the church.

this world that rebel against God, and the ways of sin that draw you from

THANKSGIVING AT THE FONT

It is right to give our thanks and praise.
We give you thanks, O God, for in the beginning your Spirit moved over
the waters and by your Word you created the world, calling forth life in
which you took delight. Through the waters of the flood you delivered
Noah and his family, and through the sea you led your people Israel from
slavery into freedom. At the river your Son was baptized by John and
anointed with the Holy Spirit. By the baptism of Jesus' death and
resurrection you set us free from the power of sin and death and raise us up
to live in you.
Pour out your Holy Spirit, the power of your living Word, that those who
are washed in the waters of baptism may be given new life. To you be
given honor and praise through Jesus Christ our Lord, in the unity of the
Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen.

INVITATION TO COMMUNION

Christ gave his life to free us from every kind of sin, to cleanse us, and to
make us his very own people, totally committed to doing good deeds.
(Titus 2:14) Come, behold and receive the Word made flesh.

Lutherans believe, teach and confess that we receive the true Body and
Blood of Christ in Holy Communion. If you desire to pick up the cross and
live in Christ, we hope you will receive with us. Even if you do not feel
prepared to receive the sacrament today we hope you will join us at the
