I.

Objectives

At the end of a 60-minute lesson, the students must have demonstrated the following with
at least 78% proficiency:

a. defined the Law of Conservation of Mass;

b. explained the Law of Conservation of Mass through balancing chemical equations;
c. determined the significance of balancing equations in chemical reactions;
d. solved problems involving law of conservation of mass though balancing unbalanced
chemical equations.

II. Subject Matter

A. Topic: Chemical Reactions

Law of Conservation of Mass and Balancing Chemical Equations

C. Skills: Communicating Ideas, Imaginative Skills, Problem Solving, Inference

D. Values: Mutual Respect, Cooperation, Patience and Problem Solving

E. Science Ideas:
Law of Conservation of Mass is proposed by Antoine Lavoisier
and states that during any chemical reaction, matter is neither created
nor destroyed, there was only grouping or regrouping (rearrangement)
of atoms. Mass is conserved from reactants to products.

MASS REACTANTS = MASS PRODUCTS

Chemical Equations are used in representing chemical reactions.

These equations aid chemists and colleagues in deciphering chemical
reactions.
Chemical equations are needed to be balanced observing the
law of conservation of mass.

III. Procedure:

A. Pre-developmental Activities

Recall:
“Good Morning Class, what have we finished the last time?”

Motivation:
The class will play a game called “Atom Socialization”
B. Developmental Activities

 Introduce the Law of Conservation of Mass in relation to the “Atom Socialization

Activity”.

 Discuss the Law of Conservation of Mass, the definition and it’s proponent.

 Explain the Law of Conservation of Mass through illustration and problem solving.

 Introduce Balancing Chemical Equation

 Solve cases of unbalanced chemical equations, observing the law of conservation of

mass

C. Post Developmental Activities

Guide Questions:

1. What is the Law of Conservation of Mass?

2. Who proposed the Law of Conservation of Mass?
3. Why is it important to observe a balanced chemical equation in
representing chemical reactions?

IV. Evaluation

Administer a short quiz regarding the Law of Conservation of Mass and

Balancing Chemical Equations.

V. Assignment
