SYNOPSIS 1

(KERALA CULTURAL REALM-A LIVING MUSEUM)

1.1 Project Introduction


The increase in the rate of development in Kerala and the influence of
modern architecture affected the use of vernacular architecture in
Kerala. By the time changes we are going lose our own traditional
architecture and values. This project consists of the conservation of
vernacular architecture of Kerala and allows to experience and learn
about our vernacular architecture values. It creates a raw atmosphere
of traditional housings and act as a referring center for vernacular
architecture.

1.2 Need of study

In India people are eager to get up-to-date with the latest trends and
technologies. The propagation of modern architecture and technologies
reduced the use of traditional architecture in Kerala. Actually we are
losing bit by bit our traditional architecture and their features. So we
should bring it back in propagation and conserve as much as we can. It
is essential to display and make people feel how good was our
traditional architecture and to make clear about the logic in vernacular
architecture.
1.3 Aim of study

The purpose of this project is to show case the traditional architecture


details, conservation of traditional values and to experience the
atmosphere of traditional housing in Kerala.

1.4 Objectives of the study


1. To showcase traditional architecture details.
2. Promotion of vernacular architecture.
3. Recreation of traditional housing atmosphere.
4. Recreation of raw landscape.
5. Library to refer about vernacular architecture.
6. Promote traditional games of kerala.
7. Bring forward the arts and crafts of kerala.
8. Helping people to understand the importance of vernacular
architecture.
1.5 Requirements
1. Museum building to showcase traditional architectural details.
2. Kerala traditional housing complex (nalukettu, pathayappura ,
kalappura , cattle shed , kulappura , kavu etc.).
3. Various forms of traditional kerala residences.
4. Library.
5. Space to perform Kerala arts.
6. Rooms for the accommodation of visitors.
7. Shop for traditional wears and articrafts.
8. Raw landscapes
9. Kiosks in the form of huts.
1.6 Limitation

This project is only based on the vernacular architecture of Kerala.


1.7 Site
1. Location: The site is located in Malappuram district, edappal near
edappal substation.
2. Approach: The site is about 500m (walkable distance) away from
the Thrissur-Kuttippuram Highway.
3. Site area: 25,317.21sqm (5.81acres).
4. Site surroundings: The site is surrounded by Manoor lake in 3
sides and the rest by some residences.
5. Reason for selecting this site: The site is rich with Kerala raw
landscape, have maximum view towards the lake , about 120m of
the site boundary is exposed to approach road and Ayurgreen
health resort is also near to this site.
