BETEL LEAF AGAINST E.

COLI
The Ethanolic, Methanolic, Ethyl Acetate and Cold Aqueous extracts of Piper betel var. Jaleswar
posses good antimicrobial properties against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli.
The antibacterial activity of leaves of Piper betel may be indicative of presence of metabolic
toxins or broad spectrum antimicrobial compounds that act against gram positive as well as gram
negative bacteria especially in solvents Ethanol, Ethyl Acetate and Methanol. [Agarwal, Singh,
Shukla, et al, 2012]

According to the study of Chakraborty & Shah in 2011, the maximum inhibition of aqueous
extract of Piper betel leaves was obtained against Escherichia coli at the concentration of 100
mg / ml. Whereas, in case of methanolic extract maximum inhibition was obtained against
Staphylococcus aureus. Ethyl acetate extract of Piper betel gave clear zone of inhibition against
Escherichia coli
