Malaysia as a tourism destination for health.

Malaysia is most popular destination for tourist in over the worlds. Malaysia also had
many kind of place to visit includes beach, waterfall, forest and so on. The tourist also had many
choice of food, which may offer visitor Malay, Chinese and Indian traditional food. Western
food also they can get anywhere in Malaysia. Many of the tourist said Malaysia is a tourist’s
heaven. Statistic indicate a strong and growing interested people from around the world visit
Malaysia every year. Now Malaysia had an extra interest, why tourist like to come here, that was
Medical Tourism.

Medical Tourism or Health Tourism or Global healthcare are very familiar terms in
current healthcare systems. But to general public and common people, medical tourism of health
tourism is still not that much clear. If we review the general information available on internet it
really explains a lot of good and positive information about medical tourism and health tourism.
Overall the entire developing world, where there are good hospitals and very skilled doctors and
low cost healthcare packages, are really getting benefited from medical tourism, while developed
world like USA, UK, Canada, Australia, where there are good healthcare facilities but they are
so expensive that a lot of their own indigenous people can not avail them. Over all medical
tourism is really providing a well required positive change in healthcare economy and more
patient entered activity is benefiting the general public, and globalization and technologies have
really made it possible.

Malaysia has gained reputation as one of the preferred locations for medical tourism and
healthcare tours by virtue of its highly efficient medical staff and modern healthcare facilities.
Medical expertise in Malaysia is a par with the western countries and most private hospitals in
the country have internationally recognized quality standards. All private medical centers are
approved and licensed by the Ministry of Health and are required to maintain stringent quality
standards.
Malaysia is a tourist heaven and it’s no exception for patients coming from medical
tourism. Patients get ample opportunity to enjoy the beaches or go for sightseeing and participate
in other tourist activities during their recuperation. While patients for less critical care cases can
enjoy an exhilarating tourist experience, Malaysia also offers enough opportunity for critical-ill
patients to take a leisurely vacation on the quiet beaches. An extensive tour of Malaysia not just
works as an enriching experience but also actively contributes to the patient recovery.

People from around the world visit Malaysia for Medical Tourism and avail high quality
medical treatment in some of the best healthcare facilities in the country. Medical Tourism in
Malaysia has been patronized by tourists looking for critical medical treatment as well as by
people in need cosmetic and preventative care. Malaysia’s success in establishing itself as a
regional hub foe excellent healthcare, capable of providing state of the art medical facilities and
services for health tourists, began following the setting up the National Committee for Promotion
of Health Tourism in January 1998.

Besides the Health Ministry, the Committee includes the Ministry of Tourism, the
Association of Private Hospitals of Malaysia and other government agencies such as the
Malaysia Association of Tours and Travel Agencies, Malaysia Airlines and several private
hospitals. The Committee has been cooperating with other agencies in carrying out promotional
activities concerning health tourism in the country. This includes collaborations with the
Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation.

Objective

Malaysia is fast becoming a strong competitor in the global health and medical tourism
sector. Given the potential of health tourism as a foreign exchange earner, the government has
taken a series of proactive measures to exchange Malaysia as a preferred health tourism
destination. Health tourism in Malaysia consists of two main categories which are medical
tourism and wellness programme. Patients can opt for medical treatments in one of our
internationally recognised hospitals, and stay on during the convalescence of recovery period. Or
they can come for a holiday by exploring the various forms of wellness programmes that are
available in Malaysia.
Advantage and the reason why the tourist choose Malaysia for Medical treatment.

The visitor for medical tourism likes to visit Malaysia for medical treatment because
Malaysia had many advantage:_

1. Before the patient think about his medical, they must think first about the cost, this is
the reason why they choose Malaysia. The price for any treatment and hospitalized
too cheaper than the first class country. For the example for cardiac bypass surgery
( CABG) in Malaysia including room and food may be taken around eight and nine
thousand US dollar but in United States the cost may be become three or four time
than Malaysia.
2. The tourist also had a choice to choose with hospital they need. This because,
Malaysia also had 35 private hospitals which identified ready to promote their
comfortable treatment all around in East and West Malaysia, including Sabah and
Sarawak.
3. This country is stable in politically not like the other country, so the visitor fell very
safety and comfortable. that why they must this t now Malaysia had a new income to
make tourist visit Malaysia.
4. Accommodation and hotels in Malaysia are another very good reason for medical
tourism promotion in this country. Malaysia has very extensive network of all
categories of hotels and motels. All big international chain of hotel are available in
Malaysia. Also very competitive in terms of service and cost, Malaysia is enriched
with variety of these accommodation places, ranging from personalized residences at
beautiful lush green terrains to exquisite chalets at the seaside. Hotels in the cities are
packed with features of style and living. All at affordable prices, a sound reason for
patients and tourists traveling for medical tourism, to choose Malaysia as the choice
destination.
Affordable and easy accommodation. Most private medical centres in Malaysia
also offer comfortable accommodation raging from private rooms to suites for single
occupancy or more. Room charges, inclusive of meals, vary at medical centres but are
attractively priced. Some medical centres even provide highly qualified and trained
private nurses and personals butlers at a reasonable cost
5. Got ISO from Malaysia Society for Quality in Health ( MSQH). Malaysia offers a
wide choice of state-of—the –art private medical centres boasting an impressive array
of sophisticated diagnosis, therapeutic and in-patient facilities. These establish are
well-equipped and staffs to ensure the highest level of professionalism, safety and
care to patients. Most private medical centres have certifications for internationally
recognized quality standards such as MS ISO 9002 or have given accreditation by the
Malaysian Society for Quality of Health.
6. Multi-cultural and religion to accommodate all patients of different cultures and
religions.
7. Easy communication, all staff speaking in English. To communicate, this is the
important things for patient all over the world selected Malaysia as a best place to
them to get medical treatment. They ( the patient ) fell comfortable when they can
talk to anybody staff in the hospital during the treatment.
8. To ease entry formalities for patients, the Immigration Department of Malaysia has
implements the Green Lane System at main entry points which expedites custom
clearance for medical travelers. Accompanying family members or friends of the
patient can take advantages of their visit to sample Malaysia’s various interesting
tourist attractions. Cities like Kuala Lumpur and Penang offer truly comprehensive
range of both health and tourism services, all within easy reach. Penang, for the
example, is not just home to many hospitals and medical centers: it boasts the
rejuvenating air of Penang Hill, the cozy warmth of shady beaches, and endless
cultural discoveries
9. Another promising feature about Malaysia as a top destination for medical tourism is
its quality of medical staff. May it be doctors or nurses; Malaysia is blessed with
some excellent doctors, who are ranked among the best in the world in their particular
fields of specializations. Malaysian doctors are trained in USA, UK and Australia
after they complete their local specialization training in Malaysian hospitals. Almost
all of the Malaysian doctors are sent overseas for at least one year training to gather
enough exposure at some center of excellence related to their field. Most of these
doctors are sent to UK, Australia of USA, and few in some other European countries.
The medium of learning of medical education in Malaysia is English, both for
doctors and nurses. Nurses here are trained for higher courses of learning after their
basic four years of education and training. A good number of nurses are sent overseas
for further studies and post graduation. A nurse is very well versed in talking and
conversing about medical issues and commons topics of interests with any English
speaking foreign patient, a quality which is not available in many medical tourism
oriented places.
One of the most promising aspect of medical tourism facilities in Malaysia is its
healthcare facilities. Malaysia has about 400 plus government and 200 plus private
sector hospitals. Almost every city and town has private and government hospitals.
Private sector has taken care of medical tourism sector and they are doing it very
well. Malaysia has excellent hospitals in terms of specialties available. Like almost
every large hospital in Malaysia, has surgical, medical and other specialties with most
of them have further sub subspecialties. The equipments available are latest up to
international standards. Both in private and government sectors in Malaysia one can
find top notch facilities, of robotic surgery, cyber knife surgery, latest ophthalmology
machines, and latest diagnostic equipments like PET scan. IF we think of specialty
hospitals, we can number IJN or National Heart Institute, solely a hospital for heart
conditions management. Tun Hussein Onn Eye Hospital is purely for ophthalmology.
National Cancer Institute of NCI is another good example of specialized services
hospital for cancer and allied illnesses. This is one of the very important aspect in
medical tourism, that tourists should pick a destination which complete in terms of
healthcare provision and where latest technologies are available, and medical practice
is a thorough entity.
10. Another aspect of Malaysia being very careful in providing information and medical
care is its Organization, named Medicine Advertisement Board. This advertisement
board called Lembaga Iklan Ubat in local language ensures that the information
provided to public in Malaysia is ethical and people are not wooed by trendy and
market driven hoarding. This board has devised policies for publishing and
advertising on internet and other media. This is a great proof that Malaysia has taken
care of its healthcare and they want healthcare providers to be careful and judicious.
This is another factor which makes world community of medical tourism, to believe
that Malaysia is prudent in providing healthcare solutions.

Comparison with the other countries.

When people around the word the choose Malaysia as a destination for second home option and
an avenue to save high costs of maintaining health and wellness. It is even more compelling to
choose Malaysia as a top destination in this regard. The age groups who choose to live in
Malaysia as a second home choice are mostly above 40 years, and this is the time, it becomes
more expensive to maintain health and prevent disease. It becomes necessary to have regular
checkups and medical reviews by qualified hospitals and doctors. The costs of this in USA, UK
and Europe are exorbitantly high, while at destination Malaysia it is reasonably well within the
reach and pocket size of international community.

Malaysia has an added advantage of being cost competitive and with highly skilled healthcare

Medical Tourism is fast developing sector in health care industry. A number of developing and
developed nations have their hopes in the system that can provide them some leverage to pay for
their healthcare bills. Certainly increasing bills of healthcare in developed world is a reason of
worry for the Governments, and they are eagerly looking forward if some one can bail them out,
some one to share their problem. On the other hand developing world is relying on earning some
quick buck out of this fast growing trend. The numbers are really amazing and every coming
day, alarming reports are published, which is creating some hope and belief for one side and a
business model to improve the standards of healthcare system for others.
Improving life expectancy resulting in growing number of old age patients, inception of newer
technologies, increasing costs of medicine are few of the most important factors resulting in
higher healthcare costs. Increasingly expensive healthcare costs, expensive healthcare insurance
costs, long waiting time have made people to cross borders to get affordable and low cost
healthcare provisions. Though this is an age old way of seeking treatment but for past one decade
it is growing exponentially and for last two to three years, it has come up to expectations. .
Internet is the main driver behind it and has made it successful. With clear and transparent
healthcare provision and patient centered approach at all levels of delivery systems has cemented
the success of medical tourism. More and more countries and healthcare providers are adopting it
and certainly it is coming up, as one of the important sectors of revenue generation. Thus
countries like India, Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia have become the ideal destinations for
Medical Tourism.Medical Tourism is fast becoming a preferred method of seeking solutions for
expensive procedure and other medical treatment options for people who are not able to pay for
unavoidable health and wellness care.
Medical Tourism, health tourism is expected to be valued at US$ 40 Billion annually in USA
alone, by year 2010. On the other hand, more than 2.9 million patients visited Malaysia and
neighboring countries to seek medical treatments in the past year. Deloitte a statistical consultant
firm of international repute estimates the number to increase by 17% CAG, year by year and
there will be 2 million patients/ tourists coming to Asia Pacific region from US/ Canadian region,
alone. Thus, the facts and figures show strong market position for medical/ health tourism.

Consequently, between years 2000 to 2007, the increase of receipts from health tourism has been
growing at 30 per cent a year and this is forecast to continue until year 2010. By then, it is
expected that a total of RM584million in medical revenue will be generated. This is a
constructive advantage reported by Association of Private Hospital Malaysia. Medical Tourism
industry in Malaysia though seems to be growing, but it has yet to reach its full potential as
resources are not used to the utmost. The industry is highly supported by the Health Ministry of
Malaysia as an economic overview has stated that it will be a constructive one ahead of time. In
nutshell, the industry is encouraged and expected to grow and prosper in the years ahead, thus
allowing healthcare providers, facilitators, corporate players to leverage and prosper to provide

Medical Tourism or Health Tourism or Global healthcare are very familiar terms in current healthcare systems. But
to general public and common people, medical tourism of health tourism is still not that much clear. If we review the
general information available on internet it really explains a lot of good and positive information about medical
tourism and health tourism. Overall the entire developing world, where there are good hospitals and very skilled
doctors and low cost healthcare packages, are really getting benefited from medical tourism, while developed world
like USA, UK, Canada, Australia, where there are good healthcare facilities but they are so expensive that a lot of
their own indigenous people can not avail them. Over all medical tourism is really providing a well required positive
change in healthcare economy and more patient entered activity is benefiting the general public, and globalization
and technologies have really made it possible.
Medical tourism in Malaysia is fast growing into a big industry, the numbers and figures really speak very clearly
about its success and every year there is a very good increase in the medical tourism, health tourism related patients
and tourist. Over all Malaysia has a lot to offer to its medical tourism patients, ranging for wide variety of tourism
choices, excellent hospitals with the state of the art medical technologies and facilities, top class international
airports, excellent roads and infra structure services for tourists. A widely English speaking community and general
public are very well versed to communicate in English. Excellent hotels and food choices that every tourist falls in
love. Weather is perfectly as per choice for medical care and health purposes.
Medical tourism, numbers in Malaysia are exponentially growing. Medical tourism figures of patients grew from 75,
210 in years 2001 to 296, 678 in year 2006. And this figure of medical tourism patients grew further to 341, 288 in
years 2007. The increase in revenue from medical tourism jumped from USD 46 Million approximately in year
2005, 59 Million in year 2006 and 77 Million approximately in year 2007. This growth is expected at rate of about
30% on year on year basis till year 2010, projected by Association of Private Hospitals of Malaysia, APHM.
The healthcare sector and best practices in Malaysia is a very good example of Malaysia’s success in providing
excellent health care facilities to its general public and medical tourism guests. This is proved through its stringent
measures to be ethics based rather business oriented. This is something which is directly related to the outcomes of
healthcare provision to patients. We have heard some terrifying stories about a favorite medical tourism destination
for Plastic and Cosmetic surgery that patients go for procedures and never come out of hospitals. This is because no
restrictions are there to check the practice of provision of medical procedures and healthcare. While this is
absolutely opposite in Malaysia. The health Ministry in Malaysia has published 35 hospitals all over Malaysia to be
promoted for medical tourism. There is a standardization and accreditation body, with the name of MSQH, to make
sure, the standard practiced in Malaysia are according to the best practices in the world. This has also enabled
provision of really excellent services to medical tourism related guests in Malaysia.
Another aspect of Malaysia being very careful in providing information and medical care is its Organization, named
Medicine Advertisement Board. This advertisement board called Lembaga Iklna Ubat in local language ensures that
the information provided to public in Malaysia is ethical and people are not wooed by trendy and market driven

Another key factor in medical tourism is Malaysian healthcare affordable choices. Malaysia is really very
competitive in terms of cost of procedures, in comparison to European and US countries. Not only that Malaysia is
also very competitive in terms of price to its regional countries. Please refer to the following table which is taken
from International Medical Tourism website and Malaysian costs are added

Medical tourism isn't just about getting more reasonably priced medical care; it's also a trend a culture that people
travel to find a place where there is more natural beauty and better options for wellness, recuperation and recovery.
Three will not be many who will like to stay in the usual places, like city luxury hotels, during this medical tourism
trip. It is always a pleasure, if people can find relaxing and tranquil places to have recovery and healing fast.
Malaysia is a great place in this regard, if we talk of excellent beaches, with clear blue water oceans, yes, Malaysia
has many. If you think of topical jungles preserved in the most natural habitat, yes Malaysia is the right choice. If
medical tourism guests think of coming for some natural spas and some natural herbal bath with flowers, barks and
roots, yes Malaysia is the right choice.
Malaysian tourism is certainly one of the strong parts, of this country to make medical tourists come to this
destination. It is really a pleasure to visit these places with best ways of communication, also at most affordable
costs. Malaysia has inbound low cost airlines, one can find less than a 100 USD ticket on a week notice to fly
anywhere inside the country. There is a wide net of highways, and roads to take tourists to any remote place.
Customized and personalized tours are available in abundance. Tour may be of highland place or seas side, or it may
be jungle tracking, one can book at a short notice. Great advantage for medical tourists visiting Malaysia.
Another very important factor promoting Malaysia as medical tourism hub, is its support by the Government of
Malaysia. Medical tourism patients can benefit from long staying visas, which can be secured for period of six
months. A hospital and doctors can provide letter of confirmation that tourists may need long stay in the country and
tourists can produce this to get extended visas for medical tourism. A very important aspect of support for people
who come for medical tourism, and some times they may need to stay longer then usual stay.
Least but not last, to mention the variety in food in Malaysia is another very good reason that bring tourists from
around the world to Malaysia, Medical tourism visitors can enjoy from local cuisines to any of their choices. Once
can find Italian, Japanese, English, Chinese, Indian, Pakistani and other regional restaurants and eateries all around.
Food variety amazes the visitors in Malaysia and one can wonder to find 200 plus dishes coked in some buffets.
Certainly Malaysia is the top destination in medical tourism.

Tourism Malaysia - NOVEMBER 5, 2007

' Health tourism in Malaysia '

MALAYSIA : Malaysia is fast becoming a strong competitor in the global health and medical tourism sector.
Given the potential of health tourism as a foreign exchange earner, the government has taken a series of
proactive measures to enhance Malaysia as a preferred health tourism destination.
Health tourism in Malaysia consists of two main categories which are medical tourism and wellness
programme. Patients can opt for medical treatments in one of our internationally recognised hospitals, and
stay on during the convalescence or recovery period. Or they can come for a holiday by exploring the
various forms of wellness programmes that are available in Malaysia.
Competitive medical fees and modern medical facilities are two vital factors that make Malaysia a popular
destination among health tourists. Patients can undergo treatment and recuperate in any part of the country
for much less than what it would cost them for a treatment in other countries. For example, a normal cardiac
bypass surgery (CABG) in Malaysia would cost only between US$6,000 and US$7,000.
Malaysia offers a wide choice of state-of-the-art private medical centres boasting an impressive array of
sophisticated diagnosis, therapeutic and in-patient facilities. These establishments are well-equipped and
staffed to ensure the highest level of professionalism, safety and care to patients. Most private medical
centres have certifications for internationally recognized quality standards such as MS ISO 9002 or have
been given accreditation by the Malaysian Society for Quality of Health.
Most private medical centres in Malaysia also offer comfortable accommodation ranging from private rooms
to suites for single occupancy or more. Room charges, inclusive of meals, vary at medical centres but are
attractively priced. Some medical centres even provide highly qualified and trained private nurses and
personal butlers at a reasonable cost.
In brief, factors that contribute to making Malaysia a centre of medical excellence in the region are listed
below:
a) Safe and politically stable country
b) Wide choice of world class infrastructure facilities e.g. National Heart Institute and Tun Hussein Onn
National Eye Hospital
c) Competitive and affordable pricing and favourable exchange rate
d) Highly qualified, experienced and skilled consultants with internationally recognised qualifications
e) Tolerant multi-cultural and multi-racial Malaysian society accommodates patients of different cultures and
religions
f) Communication is easy - English speaking medical staffs
g) State-of-the-art technology, such as MRI, 64-Slice CT Scan, PET Scanner for early detection of cancer and
other diseases, cyberknife which is able to radiate tumours without damaging adjacent vital structures
h) Quality and safety system in place, such as ISO and accreditation by the Malaysian Society for Quality in
Health (MSQH)
i) Recently, the Ministry of Health, Malaysia has set up a Corporate Policy and Health Industry Division to
promote medical tourism and related healthcare products including traditional medicine, etc. As such, the
Ministry’s promotional efforts are more focused with the support from relevant government agencies and
private sector
j) Attractive and affordable packages during recuperation period.
To ease entry formalities for patients, the Immigration Department of Malaysia has implements the Green
Lane System at main entry points which expedites custom clearance for medical travellers. Accompanying
family members or friends of the patient can take advantage of their visit to sample Malaysia’s various
interesting tourist attractions. Cities like Kuala Lumpur and Penang offer a truly comprehensive range of
both health and tourism services, all within easy reach. Penang, for example, is not just home to many
hospitals and medical centres; it boasts the rejuvenating air of Penang Hill, the cozy warmth of shady
beaches, and endless cultural discoveries.
Statistics indicate a strong and growing interest in Malaysia’s healthcare tourism industry. According to the
Association of Private Hospitals Malaysia, the number of foreigners seeking healthcare services in Malaysia
has grown from 75,210 patients in year 2001 to 296,687 patients in year 2006 which generated a total of
RM203.66 million (USD 59 million) in revenue. From January to March 2007, Malaysia received 77,009
medical tourists.
---> BRIEF BACKGROUND latarbelakang
Under Malaysia’s current health tourism promotion drive, 35 private hospitals in the country have been
identified to promote Malaysia as a health tourist destination.
Malaysia’s success in establishing itself as a regional hub for excellent healthcare, capable of providing
state-of-the-art medical facilities and services for health tourists, began following the setting up of the
National Committee for the Promotion of Health Tourism in January 1998.
Besides the Health Ministry, the Committee includes the Ministry of Tourism, the Association of Private
Hospitals of Malaysia and other government agencies such as the Malaysian Association of Tours and
Travel Agencies, Malaysian Airlines and several private hospitals.
The Committee has been cooperating with other agencies in carrying out promotional activities concerning
health tourism in the country. This includes collaborations with the Malaysian External Trade Development
Corporation (MATRADE) through its trade missions; Tourism Malaysia through its promotional activities;
various state governments; private hospital groups and the Association of Private Hospitals Malaysia.

Malaysia Still Behind In Medical Tourism, Says NCCIM

JOHOR BAHARU, March 17 (Bernama) -- Although Malaysia is an Islamic country, tourists

from the Middle East make Thailand and Singapore their choice of destination over Malaysia
when it comes to getting medical treatment.

(Mac JOHOR BAHARU , 17 (Bernama) -- Walaupun Malaysia adalah sebuah negara Islam,
pelancong daripada rekaan yang Timur Tengah Thailand dan Singapura pilihan destinasi
mereka atas Malaysia apabila ia sedar mendapat rawatan perubatan.)

Making this statement, Secretary General of the National Chambers of Commerce and
Industry Malaysia (NCCIM), Datuk Syed Hussien Al-Habshee said the lack of effective
marketing strategy was the reason for Malaysia being left behind the two countries in the
multi billion ringgit medical tourism sector.

"Although we have the clear edge in terms of religion, Muslim hospital staff, halal food and
other aspects, Middle East tourists prefer to go to Thailand and Singapore.
"Due to this, the country continues to be left far behind the two neighbouring countries in
the sector which is growing annually and worth billions of ringgit," he told Bernama in an
interview here Tuesday.

Just last year alone, 6,000 medical tourists from the Middle East went to Thailand for
various forms of treatment in the country's hospitals.

He said the Middle East medical tourists arrivals in Thailand were either financed by their
respective government agencies or private funds.

Syed Hussien, who is also former Malaysian Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates, said
there needed to be more integrated strategies for the sector from government agencies
involved.

The three ministries involved, namely the Ministry of Health, Ministry of International Trade
and Industry and Tourism Ministry should have a strategy to promote and market Malaysia
as a premier medical tourism destination, he said.

He also said that in his recent trip to Muscat, Oman, to attend the International Tourism
Market (ITM) conference and exhibition, he found Thailand aggressively promoting its
medical tourism facilities to tourists from the country, with medical officers attending to
special queries.

Syed Hussien said there was a need for Malaysia during its tourism promotion to also focus
on the special area of medical tourism.

This will be in line with the government's objectives to shift the country's economy to being
services based, he added.

Choosing Medical Tourism Destination

text file

Medical or Health tourism is the practice of going abroad to undergo medical treatment.
Medical tourism is being followed by patients to receive medical services of high quality in a
country of patients choice. For most of us it is comparatively a new concept to many of us.
This is a new concept not only for common man but also for frequent travelers. Medical
tourism is not an option for those who are famous and rich. From many parts of the world
people used to visit united states and Switzerland for quality health care. 10 years before,
Asian countries realised the prospects of medical tourism, which is going to be needed by
millions world wide. Quality Medical care is available in Asian countries which less that half
the price when compared to western counties. India and Thailand currently compete as
precursors in the medical tourism industry. Other than India and Thailand Countries like
Mexico, Costa Rica, Brazil, Poland offers world class medical care.

With regard to medical tourism or to obtain medical services overseas there are concerns of
safety, knowledge and competence of staff, and the quality of medical services that are
offered. If a person travel thousands of miles to vacation, why not does it travel far to make
a medical procedure? If a person is willing to risk having a foreigner doctor perform the
process in developed countries why is this not trust anyone from the same caliber
cardiologist in the country India itself? If a person is prepared to fully investigate hospitals
and qualified in their home, why not check those abroad and not to save money by choosing
a service abroad? Due to the reason of reduced costs and easy access to air transport,
medical tourism is currently an affordable option especially for those who seek medical
treatment in western countries. Nowadays a person can get timely medical services and
quality in a vacation paradise, for a fraction of the cost of the same medical procedure in
the
country of origin.

There is a big question that how does a person begin the task of choosing a country to
consider travel as a medical tourist? Before embarking on a medical tourism tour it is
advised to start searching for which all are the countries those offer medical services and
tourism that it is safe to travel. Currently in the field of medical tourism travel agents are
there who can help you with your research and has got as many books about which you
give the advice you need. Regardless of the country you choose to receive services,
including your home, you must find and choose a service and doctors that you are confident
in it. It is true that all countries have good equipment and bad, all countries have strongly -
doctors skilled as well as those that are poorly qualified and current operations that are less
than desirable. Again, it is already looking for you, and you are wise to access these
resources.

The above said things are all that is left for you is to decide which continent you want to go,
and in which country the continent that you have always wanted to visit. After deciding that
it should be decided regarding particular parts of the country you want to see after or
before undergoing medical treatment in the location. In most of the medical tourism tour
you will be provided to visit a destination in the country along with the medical treatment or
choose a hospital located in the tourism destination. The process that you must use in
determining the country of choice is similar

India is on mission to become the largest medical tourism in the world. Ago multitudes of
hospitals, located across the country, which are of good quality and accredited by
international bodies. Their doctors are often the United States, Canada or the United
Kingdom and they are qualified fluent in English. Their intention is to supply to tourists from
the United States, Canada, UK and Australia,
in particular. If a medical tourist potential has always desired to see the Taj Mahal, Arga
then become the destination of choice. Kerala is another destination chosen, with Western
Ghats 500-2700m of domination in the east and is the meeting of forty-four rivers. If it is
hurry up and movement of the Indian city that a person wants, then New Delhi or the
dozens of others could be a better choice.

Although India has been increased, other choices are also beautiful. The destination is really
a question of deciding where you have always ardently desired to visit, and then the
combination with this holiday, to create a health holiday . Thailand offers some of the most
primitive beaches in the world. Brazil offers jungles and beaches every two, France rain
forest, offers Costa Rica offers beautiful and romantic city flicker bids from Paris, Italy and
Switzerland (of course) offers the Swiss Alps! There is much more anonymous options that
are qualified the medical travel agent can help you to discover. If you plan a vacation. As
indicated earlier, medical tourism is simply the practice of combining vacation and medical
procedures. Where is it you always have wanted to visit? There are several travel agencies
that offer available medical a full menu of choices of destinations, and procedures are
available in each!

Overweight – An Example Perjalanan Keadaan Kesihatan

Overweight is nowadays a huge problem. The solution lies in the weight loss treatments, which are usually
provided in a health-care setting, such as a clinic or hospital and are supervised by health professionals, such as
physicians, nurses, dietitians, and/or psychologists.

Clinical weight loss programs may offer various services such as nutrition education, behavior change therapy,
medical care, with or without weight loss drug treatment. A clinical program is the best option for people who are
seriously overweight or obese. So, overweight may find it difficult to lose weight through traditional methods and
people look to weight-loss treatments and surgeries to provide the answer for long-term weight loss.

Surgical procedures are generally divided into malabsorption, restrictive, and mixed, or combination. The type of
surgery any patient will undergo will depend on how much weight needs to be lost. Lap banding and gastric
bypass are two of the most common surgeries. Obese people are on the increasing rate and their chances of
contracting modern illnesses are double.

With an aim of reducing obesity in the Malaysia, Damansara Specialist Hospital has created “The Severe Obesity
Centre? operated by a team of very experienced surgeons, doctors and medical assistants to perform
“Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass? to assist obese people to reduce weight. Also known as “Roux-en-y?,

surgery, all food taken will bypass the stomach and go directly into the intestines.

compliance to the international health standards. The Malaysian Society for Quality in Health (MSQH) was
formed through the initiatives of both the Ministry of Health Malaysia and the Association of Private Hospitals of
Malaysia, which takes care of quality standards being followed at all levels of health care related to either medical
practitioners, facilities, procedures etc.

So, medical tourism in Malaysia echoes a safe and beneficial alternative to those patients who have faced the
problems of long waiting lists and expensive medical treatments back home.

Medical Tourism Evolving Trends Pelancongan Perubatan Berkembang Tren-tren

Talking of medical tourism or health tourism is not a new topic any more in health care industry and even in
general population as well. Rising costs in provision of health and increasing waiting times has lead many people
in West to fly to countries in Asia and Latin America to seek medical attention.

Started with tourists who sought some help at medical centers in visiting countries for minor procedures, like some
plastic surgery of minor nature, the trend picked up and started growing, Almost reaching its maturity in terms of
systems, processes, services, transparency, bench marks, continuity of care, quality assurance. And most of all the
quality of care provided are all setting up a really mature and promising industry. World is aware of Google search
engine, once some term is searched, it shows results in numbers, and about 8 to 9 years ago, the term medical
tourism may only fetch few hundred results. But if someone tries it now it is in millions in Google and Yahoo, and
other search engines. This is a proof of medical tourism fast evolving into a known industry and a trusted trend in
healthcare industry.

There are many facets of medical tourism and it has become a ray of hope for Governments and Institutions, for
patients and insurance providers. While on the other hand it has become a hope for healthcare organizations who
are treating these tourists to make money out of it and improve their standards of care. Like if we follow American
phenomenon for medical tourism, their hope is that it will bail out their healthcare system for quality treatment at
no delay in getting procedures done and most of all saving huge amount of exchequer. Currently, total hip
replacement, an orthopedic procedure costs about 50,000.00 US Dollars, while same procedure is done at 10 to 15
thousand US Dollars. More over current waiting time for this procedure ranges from six months to 18 months in
USA while on the other hand medical tourists can book this procedure over night with a highly competent doctor
at a medical tourism destination like Malaysia and India. This is increasingly becoming important for countries
like USA, UK and Canada to bail out its failing public health systems, to provide wide medical coverage to large
strata of population especially non affording healthcare insurance. Increasing waiting times in Canada has led to
government of Canada reimbursing costs for medical expenses at overseas destinations. US companies are luring
their employees to go for medical tourism trips, to get treated for high cost procedures like hip, knee replacement
surgeries, cardiac, heart operations etc . More over when these patients travel overseas they land at good hospitals
and experienced doctors, who are even better what these patients may have found in their own country.

Medical tourism related flight of patients away form US healthcare providers has compelled US and Canadian
hospitals to find solutions for incompetencies related to long waiting time in important surgeries. Increasing price
factor has also made healthcare providers in USA/ Canada to check this important cause of patients and insurance
providers preferring more overseas destinations then local. Like recently US state of Orlando and Boston has
started providing some low cost solutions for hip and knee replacement surgeries to US Companies, as these
companies have earlier sent employees to overseas hospitals to cut cots. Hospitals in Boston have agreed to reduce
costs to same as at one of the favorite healthcare destination in Asia. Over all medical tourism has lead US
heaalthcare providers to reduce the costs and provide better healthcare services

On the other hand medical costs and expenditures are rising everywhere in the world, I could not find any country
where medical costs have reduced over the period of time. These counties have found medical tourism a panacea
for their burgeoning medical budgets. As the money brought by medical tourist patients can pay for uplifting the
standards of medical facilities. We can very well know this from Thailand, where there are many improved
medical facilities now, with top American technologies and equipments and accredited with JCI standards. Same
holds true for India, Malaysia and other regional countries who have found money from medical tourism patients
to pay for improving the facilities and quality of care provided. Though I have yet to come across any regulations
by government bodies to make it compulsory, for institutions to spend some part of their profits, from medical
tourism to uplift the public or local healthcare facilities. But we all can very well understand that improving
standard of medical care in private sector in any country is an important area of development, and medical tourism
has really spurred this in Latin American countries like Columbia, Mexico and Brazil, and also for Asian countries
like India, Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. Thanks to medical tourism that latest robotic surgeries are now
available in most of Asia Pacific big cities. This gives a choice for local community to avail it, as previously,
people used to fly to American hospitals to be treated with advanced tools. Another evolving important aspect of
medical tourism is hospitals getting better by taking accreditations from international standardizing bodies.
Though some countries have already in place top class accredited bodies like MSQH in Malaysia, but this did spur
the demand to further improve the standards to match advanced care in developed world to provide better facilities
to incoming medical tourism patients. It has also started revolutionizing the trends of spending on technologies
like RFID in healthcare IT related solutions and improved web based services.

Another healthy aspect of medical tourism on provider side is of, more transparent approach to match developed
nations, best practices and processes are put to even better shape, and institutions have started putting proper
descriptions to their services , rates are readily displayed for services provided, and patient rights and charters are
more openly advocated. Patient education standards have improved and more and more emphasis is being put on
keeping patients well informed of their illness and its management. This is a very important aspect to prevent
litigation which has marred the process of health care in developed world, as it has resulted in increasing costs to
set measures before litigations arise and thus escalating the costs of health care provision. Also empowering
patients with education will result in better outcomes in disease prevention and progression and also will reduce
the complications, and thus benefiting the implementation of more strict methods of this trend. Medical tourism
has made it more important for healthcare providers to practice to prevent litigation on the basis of lack of
information provided to patients.

An interesting development taking place is US hospitals, is their self venturing in opening their offices overseas to
develop patient base and bring them to USA for further treatment. More over they are sending their own patients
over seas to their own locations for low cost treatment, still keeping intact their health consumer base. These US
hospitals are venturing to get some portion of medical tourism, offering procedures at over seas hospitals running
under their care and command. The University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, created the University of
Miami International Medicine Institute, to focus on Latin America and the Caribbeanregions for which the
school already serves as a leading academic medical centre. The International Medicine Institute is looking into
investing in a hospital in Cartagena, Columbia, and seeking associations with hospitals in the Dominican Republic
and the Bahamas. Johns Hopkins has not left itself behind and has invested in the Caribbean and Central America
to setup Johns Hopkins Medicine International hospital. US-certified physicians perform several operations there
at a fraction of US costs. Elsewhere in the region, Johns Hopkins helped Clinica las Condes in Chile to become the
first hospital in that country to be JCI accredited. And few more examples are also there in which US hospitals and
healthcare providers have worked with their over sees counterparts, to get benefited from US community traveling
abroad.

Insurance companies are not left behind in providing some innovations to medical tourism industry and more and
more customized and tailor made packages are evolving. A leading American Insurance provider has recently
launched a plan for medical tourists from US, which will give them some cover against complications of
procedures once they are back after getting some procedure done at overseas destinations. Same goes with
insurance companies providing variety of contingency plans for medical tourists at overseas destinations.

Its just a beginning of evolution of medical tourism and we are yet to see, some real examples of mass medical
tourism either from or at some over seas destinations. But figures quoted by leading international business
consultants are amazing and it clearly tells of a real big industry in the phase of evolution.

Medical Tourism is fast developing sector in health care industry. A number of developing and developed
nations have their hopes in the system that can provide them some leverage to pay for their healthcare
bills. Certainly increasing bills of healthcare in developed world is a reason of worry for the Governments,
and they are eagerly looking forward if some one can bail them out, some one to share their problem. On
the other hand developing world is relying on earning some quick buck out of this fast growing trend. The
numbers are really amazing and every coming day, alarming reports are published, which is creating some
hope and belief for one side and a business model to improve the standards of healthcare system for
others.

Improving life expectancy resulting in growing number of old age patients, inception of newer
technologies, increasing costs of medicine are few of the most important factors resulting in higher
healthcare costs. Increasingly expensive healthcare costs, expensive healthcare insurance costs, long
waiting time have made people to cross borders to get affordable and low cost healthcare provisions.
Though this is an age old way of seeking treatment but for past one decade it is growing exponentially and
for last two to three years, it has come up to expectations. . Internet is the main driver behind it and has
made it successful. With clear and transparent healthcare provision and patient centered approach at all
levels of delivery systems has cemented the success of medical tourism. More and more countries and
healthcare providers are adopting it and certainly it is coming up, as one of the important sectors of
revenue generation. Thus countries like India, Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia have become the ideal
destinations for Medical Tourism.

Medical Tourism, health tourism is expected to be valued at US$ 40 Billion annually in USA alone, by
year 2010. On the other hand, more than 2.9 million patients visited Malaysia and neighboring countries

market position for medical/ health tourism.

at 30 per cent a year and this is forecast to continue until year 2010. By then, it is expected that a total of

growing, but it has yet to reach its full potential as resources are not used to the utmost. The industry is

Health and medical tourism will boost growth: Datuk Liow Tiong Lai
BEIJING: Malaysia is tapping into the health and medical tourism as part of the latest measures announced by
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak to avert recession.
Health Minister Datuk Liow Tiong Lai said the increasing number of services and medical professionals and wider
range of facilities would enable the country to ride the health and medical tourism boom.

The increase in revenue from health and medical tourism would also boost economic growth and help the country
ride out the global economic crisis, he added.

“In the past, there was a lot of opposition to health tourism due to shortage of doctors as one major problem,” he
said.

It is estimated that the medical tourism in Asia will be worth US$4bil (RM14.2bil) by 2012 and Malaysia, as one
of the top destinations for medical tourists from around the world, expects to earn up to US$590mil (RM2.1bil)
within five years, according to earlier reports.

“With the cooperation of the Tourism Ministry, the Health Ministry is also looking beyond health tourism which
includes wellness programmes like spa, yoga and traditional medicine,” he said at a dinner he hosted for
Malaysian students at the Malaysian Embassy here yesterday.

Liow also said that Malaysia, due to its multiracial society, could offer a wide range of traditional medicine such
as acupuncture (Chinese), Ayurdeva (Indian) and Malay traditional massage.

He added that Malaysia currently recognised traditional medicine degrees from the Beijing University of Chinese
Medicine, Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine.

Two more universities to be recognised later are Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine and
Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine, he said, adding that graduates from these universities need not sit for
any local examination before working at government hospitals.

He said Malaysian universities would be able to offer 12 Traditional and Complementary Medicine courses in
future when the Traditional and Complementary Medicine (TCM) Bill is passed next year.

Number of Egyptian tourists rise by almost 50%
CAIRO: The number of Egyptian tourists visiting Malaysia has increased by more than 48% for the first nine
months of this year, said Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said.

“From January to September, we received 8,550 Egptian tourists compared with 5,163 tourists for the same period
last year,” she said in a press conference on Tuesday.

Azalina, who is on a sales mission to Egypt, said 7,603 Egyptians visited Malaysia last year compared with 5,682
in 2006.

Egypt was a “high potential” tourism market and its tourists were big spenders as they stayed an average of 9.2
days and spent about RM7,000 each, she said.

Malaysia had a lot to offer Egyptian tourists including value-for-money destinations, culture diversity, comfort,
security and an Islamic environment, she said.

“Malaysia is a vacation for families. It is even safe to bring all four wives,” she quipped.

Azalina said political stability was most important for Malaysia next to ensuring a high level of service.

“Tourism is about uniting people. We want Middle Eastern tourists to feel at home here,” she said, adding that
availability of local Arabic cuisine and culture was another plus point.

Niche markets such as wellness and medical tourism, eco-tourism and education were also crowd-pullers with
341,288 medical tourists last year.

“Tourists can come on their own for medical treatment without going through travel agents,” she added.

She said a joint consultative agreement held early this year between the foreign ministers of both countries had
helped boost the number of Egyptian arrivals.

KPJ medical tourism on healthy footing
KPJ Healthcare Bhd expects revenue from medical tourism to increase by 20% this year driven by its high
level of clinical excellence and competitive pricing.

The group recorded a revenue of RM18.3mil from medical tourism last year.

Group managing director Datin Paduka Siti Sa’diah Sheikh Bakir said treatments being sought after by
the tourists were plastic and reconstructive surgery, orthopaedics, cardiac and cancer treatments.

She said KPJ was positive that with the increasing number of services and wider range of facilities, its
health tourism services would continue to grow this year

“The contributing factors to our performance in health tourism is the quality of our services, competitive
costs, regulated professional medical charges, well-trained medical consultants and similarity in culture
and religions,” she said.

Foreign medical tourists who sought treatment at KPJ hospitals were from South East Asia, Australia,
Britain, Japan, Korea and the Middle East. The majority, however, were from Indonesia.

To facilitate the foreign medical tourists, KPJ’s Ampang Puteri Specialist Hospital and Damansara
Specialist Hospital have liaison officers and employees who are able to converse in Japanese, Korean,
Arabic and Mandarin.

Siti Sa’diah added that men and women’s wellness programmes had become popular among health
tourists, including those who were obese and had severe weight management problems.
Siti Sa’diah said KPJ had developed a structured process and systems in management and clinical areas.
“With the appropriate systems and processes in place, we can just replicate them in the different countries
with some adjustments in terms of culture,” she said.

Its nursing college in Nilai, which runs diploma courses in nursing, physiotherapy, pharmacy and also
medical imaging, has trained 3,000 nurses so far.

Siti Sa’diah said KPJ planned to increase the enrolment from 1,200 to 5,000 in two to three years.

“We hope the college can be upgraded to university status so that we can offer more bachelor degrees and
post-graduate programmes,” she said, adding that the nursing college was a strategic fit for the group as it
provided a pool of well-trained staff for the hospitals.
