Sept 10, 2010 Activity: Vocabulary Bingo.
Friday I give the students strips of paper with words written on it that they have to arrange in alphabetical
order. I then mix up the strips and ask each student to pick 16 strips and write on the Post‐It notes,
one word per note. Afterwards, they arrange the Post‐It notes, 16 words, four rows of four, for John
and Rebecca while 25 words, five rows of five, for Jason and Harry. Finally, they put back the strips
of paper and I shuffle them. Each student picks on paper and reads the word aloud. Students mark
their matching Post‐It note with a colored pen. They continue in this manner until a player has
marked an entire row on their Bingo “board”
재현/영환: Unit 3‐2: My Big Brother
주현/예원: Unit 10: Letter; Unit 11: Dance Party
Sept 15, 2010 Activity: Pairworks Exercise to practice speaking.
Wednesday The two students sit facing each other rather than side by side. One side of the paper contains the
answer, while the other side contains the clue. In these, one student lacks information held by their
partner. So student A should find out the answer by asking questions to student B. For instance, “is
it a dog?” Student B should respond with a “Yes it is”, or “No it’s not”.
Oftentimes, all 4 kids just respond with yes or no and have to reminded to answer in complete
sentences.

Oct 1, 2010 Activity: Brought a voice recorder with me and let the kids play with it.
Friday 재현/영환:
Jason and Harry got really excited when I showed them how the recorder works. I start with
recording myself asking them simple questions. I play back the recording and let them listen to it.
Then I told them to start interviewing each other by letting them take turns holding the recorder
and acting as the interviewer. Jason and Harry talked for about 30 minutes. This was a great activity
since the kids had to speak English continuously. Otherwise, they would just talk to each other in
Korean all the time.
주현/예원: Unit 14: Twenty‐one Sheep; Unit 15: Traffic Lights
John and Rebecca are still very shy at speaking and don’t speak very much. John’s listening skills are
very good and I can tell that he understands majority of what I’m saying because sometimes I can
hear him explaining it to Rebecca in Korean.
Oct 6, 2010 Activity: Pictures Games
Wednesday Practice listening skills and saying declarative statements. I start by showing them a paper with 16
pictures (e.g. 16 cats, 16 monsters, 16 girls, 16 houses, Harder pictures for Harry and Jason, while
easier pictures for John and Rebecca). I say four sentences to describe the picture they have to find.
The first to guess correctly then takes a turn at being the leader.
재현/영환: Unit 4‐2: Pet Show
Harry and Jason have a tendency to speak in incomplete sentences during this practice and have to
be reminded constantly.
주현/예원: Unit 16: Jerry the Painter
John and Rebecca need more practice in correct grammatical structures during the speaking
practice.

Oct 13, 2010 Spelling Practice: Days of the Week (Monday, Tuesday,… Sunday) and Numerical Spelling (one, two,
Wednesday three,…. twenty)
All four kids still have a hard time spelling “Wednesday”.
Rebecca and John still have a hard time spelling “three”
재현/영환: Unit 5‐1: Here Comes Bus Driver Pete!
주현/예원: Unit 17: Glasses
Oct 15, 2010 Art day: Students use recycled cup sleeve and stirrer to make their own art. I
Friday showed them an example of what I did with my own. I also brought old
magazines that they can use to cut pictures and letters from. They will make 3
pieces, one for Mom, one for Dad, and one as their own.
재현/영환: Jason was very diligent in his project. He was proud of his work
and right after he finished, he asked me if could go out and give it to his mom.
Harry needed a little encouragement but completed his project well.
주현/예원: Rebecca really got creative with her piece and even started to put
a message like “Mom, I love you” and “Dad is great”. She showed a lot of
enthusiasm over the project and even continued to cut out all the pictures that she liked from the
magazine after she finished her work. She also showed some innovation by sticking the pictures on
the stirrer itself, which is something I didn’t show her. John was less enthusiastic, but he followed
instructions very well and completed his project very well.
Oct 20, 2010 Quiz day.
Wednesday 재현/영환: Quiz from Unit 1 to 4
Harry finished very quickly and only made a few mistakes with arranging the words in the sentence.
Jason kept complaining that the test was hard and needed to be guided through but nevertheless
performed very well. Jason also listened intently when I corrected his mistakes.
주현/예원: Quiz from Unit 1 to 10
Rebecca was the first one to finish. I asked her to sit by herself on one side of the room and she was
very diligent in answering the quiz. I checked her paper and marked the correct answers. I gave it
back to her and she corrected the mistakes by herself. John however lacked focus. But when I sat
with him one on one and guided him through the quiz by reading the questions together with him,
he was able to pay more attention and finish the quiz.
