Andaman

If beauty had a form, then it surely would have been living in Andaman. The cumulative
islands of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, are known for being actual Garden of Eden. The
island of Andaman is bedecked with the best of natural attractions and host of adventure
activities.

Tread along the long sandy beaches that cater to turtle nesting. Some of the popular
islands here are Ross Island, Viper Island, Havelock Island and Corbyn's Cove.

The Radhnagar Beach, Harminder Bay beach, Corbyn’s Cove Tourism Complex and Karmatang Beach are a few where

The best time to visit Andaman is during the months of October to May. Also there are many flights that connect to the
island. Alternatively tourists can enjoy sailing to the island as well. Ship services are available from Chennai and
Vishakhapatnam.

When To Go
Andaman has a moderate temperature all through the year within the range of 23°C to 31°C. It has a tropical climate.
There are no severe climate conditions except for tropical storms and rains in late summers and monsoons. The best time
to visit Andaman is from October to May.
Winters (December to February) are not chilly and pleasant. The period is ideal for sightseeing, water sports and other
tourist activities.
Summers (March to May) are warm but pleasant with sea breeze and have humidity level about 80%. It is suitable for all
kinds of tourist activities.
Monsoons (mid-May to August) and Post Monsoons (September to November) accompany medium to heavy rainfalls. It
is not a good time for visit but the natural environs looks very attractive in monsoon.
June to September is prone to thunder storms and heavy rains, which makes it difficult for tourists to enjoy the sightseeing.
October to May is ideal for sightseeing and also to engage in water sports activities.

Travel within city


The Andaman Islands are an extremely beautiful chain of island that can take away the breath of any tourist setting foot on
them. Travelling between the Andaman Islands is quite easy, as there are many auto rickshaws, taxis, scooters and
motorcycles available for travelling within the island. You can travel between two islands through passenger ferries too.

Ferry
Passenger ferries are the most preferred mode of transport that tourists go for in the Andaman, in order to travel between
the various islands. These are run by the government and are quite cost effective, as the charges hover around Rs 150 to
200 only. Small ferries are available for tourists and large ferries are available for the locals. You can also opt for
catamaran ferries to travel between islands and these are quite expensive, as they cost around Rs 700 to 1000. Ferries
need to be booked in advance and these are a safe mode of travel.

Auto Rickshaw
Auto rickshaws are available in the main islands and you can use these to travel within the island. They do not run on
meter and negotiating a predetermined rate is advisable. There are no night charges involved, and fares may range from
Rs 10 to 40.

Taxi
Taxis, available in the Port, will charge slightly more, around Rs 100 to 200.

Scooter
Scooters can be rented from local dealers for a deposit of around Rs 750 to 1000.

Attractions

Chatham Saw Mill mustsee

Chatham Saw Mill, owned by Forest department, is credited as one of the biggest and oldest saw mills all through Asia and
is located at the north tip of Andaman. A bridge connects this saw mill to Port Blair. The mill, dating back to 1836, is a big
store house for different varieties of wood including Marble, Padauk, Gurjan and Satin wood.

The mill cuts massive wood into different sizes and shapes of timber and is functioning as the main source of timber for
government and private agencies at a moderate price. This mill processes many types of ornamental wood suitable for
making furniture and handicrafts.
Timings: 8.30 am to 2.30 pm (Monday to Saturday). Closed on Sunday, Public holiday & Industrial holidays. Charges:

Viper Island mustsee

Viper Island, named after the ship wreck event of a British trading ship named "Viper" in 19th century, is located near Port
Blair. The ruins of an olden discarded jail, built by British in 1867, with yellow colored bricks and the gallows are seen in
this Island. The Island was considered as the place of penal settlement for the freedom fighters of India. This Island was
part of the great Indian independence history and had witnessed the sufferings and sacrifices of Indian national involved in
freedom struggle.

Viper Island is a serene beautiful tourist destination and can be approached by harbor cruise originating from Phoenix Bay
Jetty in Port Blair. This place is visited by number of tourists as it has multiple attractions with historical importance and
also has mesmerizing picnic spots with natural picturesque environments.
Timings: Harbour Cruise: 3.00 pm to 05.00 pm from Andaman Water Sports Complex jetty daily. Rs 60 per person.

Barren Island popular

Barren, the only active volcano in South Asia, is a small island in eastern location of Andaman group of islands in Indian
territory. This island lies 300 m above the sea level and the volcano in this place erupted last in 2006. The first volcano
eruption was reported in 1787. A deep void land, the face of the volcano, is an attraction to the tourists. This is a barren
region uninhabited by people.

This is a natural habitat for wild goats which live here by drinking the salt water and is a unique feature of this island. The
Barren Land can be approached by broad vessels and one can view the island from the vessel. There is no permission to
get down in the island. The travel to this Island is a breathtaking adventurous experience.

Forest Museum popular

Forest Museum in Andaman is situated at Haddo and is run by the Forest Department of Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
The museum very typical in its contents displays the artifacts made out of timber including peauma, oak, gurjan, paduak
and satin wood. The Museum helps the visitor to get some insight in the forestry and related activities. One can see many
attractive models in timber showcased here.

The major attractions near by this Museum include a beautiful zoological garden and a mini zoo.

Indira Point
A part of great Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Indira point simply represents the southernmost point of land in India’s
territory. Named in honour of Indira Gandhi, this point was earlier known by different names such as Pygmalion Point,
Parsons Point, and for a short period of time, India Point. The lighthouse is partly submerged due to the occurrence of
tsunami in 2004.

Jarwa Reserve
Government of India reserved some of the regions of Andaman Islands for the tribes Jarwa in Andaman. This Jarwa
reserve is part of the dense forests in two islands of Andaman. Jarwa, the first inhabitants of the Islands, is one of the four
aborigines of Andaman Islands. The population of Jarwa has dwindled to around 200 and the government is taking special
care in promote the causes of Jarwa tribes.

Jarwa tribal reserve is dynamic with the festivities of tribes including the traditional songs and dances, rituals, indigenous
medicinal practices, unique social order and other ceremonies. This reserve is enriched with rare species of flora and fauna
as well.

Kayaking
Andaman offers many exciting water sports for adventurous travellers and kayaking is one of them. Kayaking is also
another way to explore the beautiful Andaman. One can simply hire a kayak and paddle at the close proximity of Havelock
jetty or even at Radhanagar beach, which is also known as Beach no. 7.

Kayaking while in Andaman give you an opportunity to explore tidal creeks, mangrove lined creeks and a multitude of
uninhabited tropical islands. While kayaking, you can also get a glimpse of rare endemic species like Andaman Teal, Asian

Port Blair

Port Blair is the capital and the largest township of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The city
lies on the eastern coast in the southern region of the Andaman Island. Port Blair houses
many museums and serves as an important base for the Indian Coast Guard and Indian
Navy.

Port Blair is a small quaint city that has a calm and relaxed feel to it. You can find people
from all parts of India residing there. The languages widely spoken in the city are Tamil,
Hindi, Bengali and Telugu.

The Cellular Jail is a popular tourist attraction in the city. The picturesque and laid back Barren Island is the perfect place to
spend a weekend. The Island also is home to the only active volcano. Places near Port Blair such as Ross Island and
Wandoor are also frequently visited destinations. Corbyn’s Cove is a decent beach in the city. However, most of the beach
was devastated during the 2004 Tsunami and hence be careful if you decide on swimming. A Mini Zoo is located at Chidiya
Tapu, which houses species belonging to the island.

If you visit Corbyn Cove, do not miss the Japanese Bunkers, which were built during The World War II by the Japanese
army. A Chatam Saw Mill, which is the oldest of its kind in Asia and an Anthropological Museum, can also be found in the
city.

Taking boat tours from the city to the Islands nearby such as North Bay and Ross is a good option. However, if you are an
adventure sports enthusiast, you can go for snorkeling at Jolly Buoy. It offers you a better view of the fishes and corals than
that at the Havelock Island.

Finding resorts or hotels to stay at the Island is not a problem as there are a range of such places which would suit your
budget. Tourists can opt for accommodation options at Corbyn’s Cove, which is almost 7 km away. Peerless Resort and
Hornbill Nest Guest house are two of the popular options here. Avoid entering restricted tribal areas while exploring the
Island.

You can take a flight from Chennai or Kolkota to Port Blair, which the main entry point that is located on the east coast of
South Andamans. If you wish to travel by sea, then you can sail from Chennai, Kolkota or Vishakapatnam. The climate is

Andaman Water Sports Complex mustsee

Andaman Water Sports Complex is a renowned sports complex in India and is a unique sports complex offering many
adventurous water sports activities. It is located close to the Cellular Jail in the north-west Port Blair.

This sports complex offers all kinds of water sports facilities for comfortable, safe and enjoyable experiences. Sail boats,
para sailing, water scooters, rowing boats, kayaks, paddle boats, and water skiing facilities are available in plenty here in
this complex. Boating up to Ross Islands from this complex is an exciting experience.

A marvelous monument, built to honor the historical fight Battle of Aberdeen, add to the beauty of this region. There is an
artificial waterfall as well, which is a great attraction among the visitors. A children park nearby is a place for children to
enjoy the serene environment.

Samudrika Marine Museum mustsee

Samudrika Marine Museum, run by the Indian Navy, is located at Delanipur in Andaman. This museum is aimed at
generating awareness among the visitor about the environment in the ocean and the marine life. The Samudrika Marine
Museum has five sections dealing with history of Andaman Islands, Geographical information, people of Andaman,
Archaeology and finally the Marine life.

The museum houses a wide collections of corals, shells and fish fauna. This museum is a real treasure of worthy marine
life, especially that of rare fish species.

Cellular Jail mustsee

Cellular Jail, presently a revered shrine dedicated to great Indian freedom fighters who sacrificed their
lives for the Independence of our Nation, is situated at Aberdeen near Port Blair in Andaman Islands. The
Cellular Jail meant to imprison the freedom fighters of India was built in 14 years beginning in 1886 by the
British rulers.

The original Cellular Jail contains seven regions with the central region having a tower. There were four floors with first
three floors for cells and the fourth floor functioned as the watch tower. One can see here the execution room where the
freedom fighters were hanged by the colonial rulers.

The visitors can see the light and sound show depicting the sacrifice of freedom fighters and also showing up the brutal
history of the Cellular jail. The Martyr’s memorial, a gallery and a museum are also located here, reminiscing Indian
independence struggle.

Corbyn's Cove mustsee

Corbyn's Cove is a serene and unspoiled soft sandy beach in Andaman near to Port Blair. This beach is
set in picturesque backgrounds of lush green coconut palms and pleasant sea. There is a pristine tourism
Complex, which offers all kinds of facilities for an enthusiastic traveler.

This is an ideal spot for sun basking and sea bathing. The main attractions in this beach are the inviting
water sports activities. This beach and the water closed to the beach are perfect location for surfing, scuba diving and
boating. Many pill boxes and bunkers established by Japanese add the attraction of the beach.

Jolly Buoy Island popular

This island is located inside the Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park and flaunts of having almost white sand beach with
canopies and dense bushes. A mixture of both shallow and deep waters, the island is perfect for snorkeling and scuba
diving. Rich in colorful and beautiful fauna, the underwater marine life here is fantastic.

Jolly Buoy can be easily accessed by boats from Wandoor, which is 30 km from Port Blair. It will take around one hour to
reach the island from Wandoor. Due to the fragile ecosystems, the use of plastic is restricted in Jolly Buoy.

Gandhi Park popular

Located at the centre of Port Blair, Gandhi Park is one of the major tourist spots in Andaman & Nicobar Islands. An
integration of natural brilliance, artificial creations and historical monuments, the park draws many tourists from around the
globe.

Recently, a children’s park has also been created within the Gandhi Park, facilitating all types of sporting equipment. It also
has an amusement park and an entertainment park where visitors can have lots of fun & entertainment.

Apart from supporting a bird park, Gandhi Park also hosts artificial but well maintained gardens, restaurants and lakes. At
the lake, one can enjoy water sports such as sailing, snorkeling, surfing & paddle boat rides.

The Gandhi Park of Andaman & Nicobar Islands also possess a Japanese Temple and a bunker, both constructed during
World War II, showing its immense historical significance.

Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park (Wandoor) popular

Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park, also known as Wandoor Marine National Park, is a popular
tourist attraction in Andaman. This is a fantastic National Park for Marine life in Andaman and is unique
all over the world. The pristine beauty Jolly Buoy Island is a part of this National Park.

The National Park encloses a stunning golden beach with soft sands and lush green surroundings dense
with bushes and coconut palms. This renowned marine park encloses part of open sea & a number of small and large
islands and creeks.

This is one of the worlds best known scuba diving location in Andaman. One can get a close look of underwater marine life
in the beaches of this National Park, including corals and sea weeds.

It is advised to take packed lunch and water before proceeding to the Marine National Park. Closed on Mondays. Tourist
Coaches are available from Andaman Teal House to Wandoor. Regular bus services are also operated from Bus Terminus
to Wandoor.

Note: Entry permit (issued by the Forest Department) is required to enter the Park. Facility available between 8.30 am to
11.00 am and 2.30 pm to 4.30 pm, (Sunday closed). Boat to be taken from Wandoor jetty for Jolly Buoy and Red
Skin islands (Rs 300/per person). Tourists are only allowed to spend 2 ½ hours in both these islands (closed on Mondays).

Marina Park and Aquarium popular

Marina Park and Aquarium is a prime attraction in Andaman and Nicobar Islands. It is located in the unspoiled seashore
close proximity to Water Sports Complex. The local inhabitants and the visiting tourists use this park for spending their
valuable evenings by enjoying the nature’s gifts of pristine beauty, stunning sea waves and lush green vegetations.

The Aquarium is a praise worthy place enclosing many marine life including various kinds of sea fishes and turtles. A
children’s park with many facilities for kids enjoyment, a toy train and many other amusement facilities make this park a

Mount Harriet popular

Mount Harriet, stationed at 55 km by road and 15 km by ferry from Port Blair is the highest peak (365 m high) in South
Andaman. Its natural charm and beauty attracts a lot of visitors. From the top of the peak, one can get a magnificent view
of the Port Blair city, the Ross Island and the Havelock Island.

Ferry or taxi service is available from Chatnam wharf to Bamboo flat. From here vehicles can be taken to reach Mt. Harriet.
Trekking up to Madhuban through a natural trail allows you to get a glimpse of rare endemic birds, animals & butterflies.

An overnight stay at the guest house there will be great to experience the beauty of the night in the hilly land. But for
staying overnight, permission of the warden at Port Blair is required.

North Bay (Coral) Island popular

Located in Port Blair, the beach around Coral Island is well known for water corals. The island with pristine sand beaches,
edged by natural beauty is perfect for sea loving human and nature lovers. The coral reefs are beautifully adored by nature
drawing many visitors.

The island is accessible from Port Blair via ferry. Ferry can be taken from Rajiv Gandhi Water Sports Complex jetty and it
will take around 15 to 20 mins to reach the island. Besides, one can also enjoy snorkeling and experience the underwater
world.
Timings: Timings (ferries): Ferries available from 9 am daily. Charges: Ferry cost: Rs 125, Snorkeling - Rs 300 per head,
Glass boat- Rs 200 per head.

Anthropological Museum popular

Anthropological Museum is maintained and managed by ASI, Anthropological Survey of India, and is located at Port Blair,
the capital of Andaman. It is an exquisite small museum showcasing wide collection of tools and weapons used by
Anadamanese tribes. This also encloses many photographs of different tribes and aborigines of Andaman and Nicobar
Islands.

A great treasure of Island history, a well maintained library, functions on the top of the museum. Many films depicting the
life and culture of the Andaman are also preserved here. The Museum authorities arrange few documentary and film shows
for the visitors of the museum.

Science Centre popular

A must see place while visiting Andaman & Nicobar Islands is the Science Centre. Located at Goodwill Estate, Corbyn’s
Cove Road in Port Blair, this science centre reveals the science behind the functioning of Oceans, the maturation of Corals
and behavior of fish with the climatic changes. The Centre itself is the integration of the aspects of Geography and
Science.

Science Centre also has an amphibian seaplane, operating in the region and a host of outdoor exhibits. At this centre,
visitors can gain knowledge on science of oceans while creating waves of different parameters and exploring their features.

One can get a glimpse of variety of birds and butterflies in the grounds of the Science Centre, in their natural habitats.

Rangat

Rangat of Andaman Islands is sited at a distance of 210 km from Port Blair. This hilly island edged with beautiful coconut
palms is an ideal place to enjoy the serenity of the virgin nature. The population here is a mixed of Bengali and Tamil. Its
eco-friendly and unpolluted atmosphere draws a large number of tourists.

Situated 20 km from Rangat Bazaar, the Cutbert Bay beach is a nesting ground for turtles (December to February), offering
a unique experience to tourists visiting Rangat. Some of the major attractions include Panchavati waterfall/beach, Amkunj
beach and Betapur beach.

Cutbert Bay Beach popular

Situated at a distance of 20 km from Rangat Bazaar/jetty, Cutbert Bay Beach is nesting ground for turtles. One can get a
glimpse of turtles nesting here during the months of December to February. Located close to the beach is the Hawksbill
Nest, guest house of the Directorate of Tourism, which is well known for its quality service and other modern amenities.
There is also a turtle sanctuary nearby which one can also visit.

Amkunj Beach
This sandy beach is located 8 km from Rangat on the way to Cutbert Bay. An ideal spot to swim, sun bath and relax, the

About 20 km on the way to Mayabunder is the Betapur beach. The beach can be easily accessed by bus and is the closest
nice beach in Rangat which should not be missed during your visit to Rangat of Andaman Island.

Panchavati Water Fall


Located on the way to Cutbert Bay Beach, this waterfall is one of the attractions of Rangat. One should not miss this
beautiful, gentle waterfall during their visit to Rangat in Andaman. Amkunj beach is a close by attraction that can be visited
too.

Diglipur Island

Situated in North Andaman, Diglipur Island is a land of natural wonders, a perfect place for
eco-friendly tourists. From Port Blair, the island is 290 km by road and 185 km by sea.
Visiting this island means experiencing the joy of natural beauties and the amazing
underwater world. The sounds of the sea and pristine white sands of the beaches are

Kalipur beach is sited at a distance of around 18 km from Diglipur. An ideal turtle nesting ground, the beach is the home of
four species of Sea turtles including Olive Ridley, Leather Back, Hawks Bill and Green turtles. Offering a combination of
sand & rock shores along with fishing village nearby, one can have a great time here.

Ramnagar Beach
Situated to the north of Diglipur, this beach is an ideal spot to enjoy the serene environment. Popular for its widely
scattered grains of sand, the beach can be accessed through water or road. Tourists can enjoy trekking, scuba diving and
snorkeling while visiting this beach. The beach can be visited throughout the year, but it is best to visit during the months of
December and early April.

Saddle Peak National Park


Situated 5 km from Diglipur, this national park is situated in the Saddle Peak area, which is at an altitude of about 2400 ft.
The park houses variety of wildlife including Andaman wild pig, water monitor lizards, whales, saltwater crocodile, dolphins
and Andaman imperial pigeon. The vegetation here is characterized by humid, warm and wet tropical climate. November to
April months is best time to visit this park.

Havelock Island

Havelock Island, mostly inhabited by Bengalis, is situated nearby Port Blair. The villages in
this imposing picturesque Island are identified with the numbers. The Main bazaar is in
Village No 3 and the boat dock is in village No 1.

referred to as Beach no. 7. The beach is extremely gorgeous with its brilliant, pristine and blue water.
Walking on the pristine sands along the shore, one can hear the sound of waves gently splashing against
the beach.

It is a perfect place to enjoy the beautiful sunset. Besides, tourists can indulge swimming and snorkeling to experience the
wonderful world of underwater.

Lying on one corner of Havelock Island, Kalapathar Beach is a worth visiting beach on the Island. This
serene beach gets its name from the surrounding village, known as Kalapathar village and the black
rocks embellishing the coastline. Unexplored and untouched, the beach is a great place to relax. An
elephant training camp is located nearby and is sometimes open for visitors.

Vijay Nagar Beach


Situated around 4.5 km from Havelock Island is the beautiful Vijay Nagar beach. It is an ideal place where one can relax
and enjoy a long walk along the sea shore. It’s nice and calm water makes it suitable to enjoy swimming.

Baratang Island

Blessed with natural beauty, Baratang Island is one of the main islands of Andaman. It is
situated at a distance of around 90 km from Port Blair on the NH 223, also referred to as
Andaman Trunk Road towards Diglipur. The island covers an area of about 238 square km
and totally separated by Creeks on both side. Connected through roadway with Port Blair
city, the island is accessible all year around.

Rich in marine life, the island is also well forested. The presence of Mud Volcano and

The site is reachable by sea within 50 mins. Regular boat services are available from Baratang and the boat trip through
the middle of the mangrove forest is simply awesome. It is dark inside the caves, so one needs to carry torchlight.

Located at a distance of about 4 km from Baratang jetty, Mud Volcano is a main attraction for tourists visiting Baratang

Baludera Beach
On the eastern side of Baratang Island, about 9 km from Nilambur is the beautiful empty beach of Baludera. This
unpolluted shallow and isolated beach is perfect for swimming. During low tide one can even splash through a kilometer.

Roglachang Beach
