PURPOSE
This is to inform operators about the existence of a fly-away kit for repair of hydraulic leaks to
avoid or minimize operational interruption if an external hydraulic leak exceeds maximum
permissible leak rates as per AMM 29-00-00. A temporary or permanent repair can be
performed according to instructions and components listed in this article.

This article takes into account latest standards and in-service experience such as:

- repair of titanium tube (used on latest developed A/C but not on A300/A300-600/A310)
- reported leak due to seal damage
- only standard tools (spanner, torque wrench) are required to perform the repairs.

The content of this article has been incorporated in AMM 20-23 for A330/340 and A320 Family
Aircraft.

RECOMMENDATION
Pipe and hose repair:
Pipe repair:
Pipe repair methods are listed in AMM 20-23-l1 and summarized in ISI article 29.00.00151.

“H-Fittings” repair method and the use of flexible hoses have been chosen as it allows repair
with standard tools of all pipe materials (stainless steel, titanium and aluminium).

H-Fitting repair on titanium pipes as on stainless steel and aluminium pipes is considered as
permanent repair.
A temporary repair of rigid pipes with a flexible hose must be:

- replaced by a permanent one (ISI article Ref.: 29.00.00151 or installation of new

pipe) at first opportunity not exceeding 20 takeoffs*.
- inspected daily to make sure that it is in the correct condition.

* can be extended to 1000 flight hours or 750 flight cycles, whichever comes first, if there is
no other hydraulic line temporary-repair on the three hydraulic systems, with an inspection
as follows:

- first inspection after first flight,

- further inspections at weekly intervals.

The temporary repair of rigid pipes with a flexible hose is not authorized for:

- hydraulic lines in engine area

- hydraulic lines in the pylon box structure
- hydraulic lines in the pylon forward secondary structure
- hydraulic lines in fuel tanks
- coiled flexible pipes
- hydraulic lines installed on the landing gear legs.

Hose repair:
- A temporary repair of a flexible hose with a flexible hose spare connected to a part or
equipment with a fixed position must be:
o replaced by the specified one at first opportunity not exceeding 20 takeoffs*.
o inspected daily to make sure that it is in the correct condition.

*can be extended to 1000 flight hours or 750 flight cycles, whichever occurs first, if there is
no other line temporary-repair on the three hydraulic systems, with an inspection as
follows:

o first inspection after first flight,

o subsequent inspections at one-week intervals.

- A temporary repair of a flexible hose with a flexible hose spare connected to a part or
equipment, which can have different positions must be:
o replaced by the specified one at first opportunity not exceeding 20 takeoffs.
o inspected after first flight to make sure that it is in the correct condition. If there
are no findings after first flight, do a daily inspection afterwards.

The temporary repair of a flexible hose with a flexible hose spare for the two above cases is not
authorized for:

- hydraulic hoses in engine area

- hydraulic hoses in the pylon box structure
- hydraulic hoses in the pylon forward secondary structure
- hydraulic hoses installed on the landing gear legs.

Temporary installation of hoses:

If a hose is used as temporary repair it should be attached to an adjacent pipe or another
hose by means of tie-wraps to avoid chafing with the surrounding structure as far as
possible.

If contact with the structure or a component cannot be avoided, the relevant section of the
hose shall be protected by means of a chafe guard.

Avoid sharp bends and torsion of hoses. Examples of pipe repairs: See pages 5 and 6.
Sealing repair
Sealing of hydraulic systems is generally ensured by O-rings (found under plug-in unions on
components and manifolds) and bobbins (found between components and manifolds). Refer
to AMM 20-29-00 for details and replacement instructions.

The set of O-rings and bobbins will permit to perform permanent repair by replacing them as
necessary.

Equipment deactivation
In-situ repair is not allowed. Equipment needs to be overhauled in workshop. Due to good
access, equipment replacement should be quickly achieved. However delays are experienced
when a spare part is not available, this can be particularly experienced when the aircraft is at
an outstation.

However, in some cases the aircraft could be dispatched under MMEL or TA agreement with
the related component hydraulically isolated. For that purpose blanking caps may be useful
and will be part of the proposed kit.

Fitting replacement
The correction of various kinds of fitting leakage due to crack or thread damage can be easily
and quickly repaired by replacement of the standard fitting.

Note: Replacement of aluminum fittings can be done with stainless steel types (small weight
penalty) but possible change of tightening torque values have to be taken into account.

Conclusion
Airbus suggests the use of components listed in the appended guide. This list includes a large
range of parts, which enables operators to perform repairs in many areas of the hydraulic
system. It is up to the operator to delete or add items to the list, based on individual
requirements and experience.

Operators are reminded that Chapter 20 of the AMM remains the reference documentation
concerning maintenance and repair of hydraulic systems.

The final choice of components and method of repair is under the responsibility of the
operator, who should ensure compliance with their respective airworthiness authorities’
directives.
