The purpose of this experiment was to study the effect the temperature of water
has on the masculinization and growth of tilapia. Because male tilapia have a faster
growth rate and their metabolic energy is channeled toward growing, they are more
economically attractive than female tilapia. Two experiments were conducted to
determine the effects temperature has on these factors. The first experiment used three
temperatures(25 °C, 30°C, 35°C) and four periods of times(1 week, 2 weeks, 3 weeks,
and 4 weeks) to study the effect of water temperature on the male ratio, mortality rate,
and weight of Nile Tilapia fry. The second experiment used the data from the first
experiment to evaluate the growth and survival rate of sex reversed tilapia. After the
experiments were done, it was found that the weight of the Nile fry increased from
0.16-1.51 g at 25℃, 0.30-2.67 g at 30℃, and .27-2.05 g at 35℃ after 1,2,3,& 4 weeks of
rearing. The highest value of male ratio and male mortality rate (91.50% and 17.13%)
was seen at 35℃ and 4 weeks of rearing.
Keywords: Nile tilapia, temperature, male ratio, sex ratio, weight gain, specific growth
rate, feed conversion rate.
