WORKSAFE MATTERS
Effective health and safety performance involves more than
just having a management plan and systems. It requires the
commitment and involvement of everyone in the workplace,
and it involves knowledge and practices at all levels and the full
integration of health and safety in everyday behaviour.

Metal Manufacturing Industry
Health and Safety Leadership Initiative
ACC, in partnership with the Ministry of Business, Innovation
and Employment’s Metal Industry Safety Group, has developed
a health and safety leadership initiative to focus on reducing
injuries in the workplace.
WorkSafe Matters targets those leaders responsible for the
implementation of health and safety practices within the
workplace.
The resources and promotions consist of a range of
programmes that includes a combination of coaching and
practical resources that will support the integration of health and
safety into normal day-to-day business management practices.

Metal manufacturing facts
– Did You Know?
Metal manufacturing is recognised as a high-risk industry and
has the second-highest injury rate within the manufacturing
sector. The effects of these injuries have significant impacts
on workplace productivity and individuals and their families.
The greatest losses are human, but injuries also result in
a financial cost – to the business, the individual and all
New Zealanders.
Metal manufacturing employs 3% of the working population
yet is responsible for 6% of all new work claims and 6% of
all entitlement claim costs. Based on injury figures for 2012,
there is an average of 104 injuries reported each month.

Manufacturing Sector Action Plan 2013, implemented through

• Injuries are preventable, and everybody has a role to
ensure that they go home injury free each day.
• The aim is to engage management and those
responsible for health and safety and to support
health and safety in the workplace.
• A range of existing health and safety management
programmes, resources and services is
available to support workplaces to develop and
implement safe workplace practices.
