The Moon

A
The moon is a very different place from the Earth. Its gravity is only about 17 percent of Earth’s gravity. 100
grammes on Earth would weigh just 17 grammes on the Moon. Temperatures on the moon vary from highs
of nearly 129°C to lows of about 76°C. The moon is only a little more than one percent of the Earth’s mass.

B
After a careful analysis of those phases, scientists believe the moon’s orbit time has increased. About a
billion years ago, it took the moon only 20 days to orbit the Earth. The moon’s gravitational attraction, which
is much stronger than the sun’s gravitational attraction, causes ocean levels (tides) to rise and fall twice each
day.

C
The moon is the only Earth’s satellite. It is located about 238,900 miles from the Earth, though it can be as
close as 221,000 miles and as far as 252,000 miles. The moon orbits the Earth (actually, the moon and Earth
orbit the sun together in a system). It takes 27.8 days for the moon to make a complete orbit. At various
times during its orbit, different amounts of the moon are visible on Earth (known as moon phases), though
the same side of the moon always faces the Earth.

D
On July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong became the first human being to walk on the surface of the moon as part
of the Apollo 11 mission. His phrase, “That’s one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind,” is one
of the most famous quotes in recent history. Twelve people have walked on the moon. Today, scientists are
searching for evidence of the current or past existence of water on the moon.

Task A: Number the paragraphs in the correct order

Task B Circle T for true and F for false. Correct the false statement/s on the blank line/s below.

4 The distance between the Earth and the moon is always the same. T F

5 In the past the moon took less time to make a complete orbit around the Earth. T F
