EXPERIMENT NO.

1 – AMPLITUDE MODULATION
OBJECTIVES:
The purpose of this experiment is to examine the AM signal using the scope and compare it to the
original signal, and to observe the effects of modulating the carrier too much.
Materials:
1. Personal Computer with necessary software installed
2. NI ELVIS II plus USB cable and power pack
3. Emona DATEx experimental add-in module
4. Two (2) BNC to 2mm banana-plug leads
5. Assorted 2mm Banana-plug patch leads
Procedures:
1. Ensure that the NI ELVIS II power switch at the back of the unit is off.
2. Carefully plug the Emona DATEx Experimental add-in module into the NI ELVIS II.
3. Connect the set-up shown below.

4. Connect the NI ELVIS II to the PC using the USB cable.

5. Turn on the NI ELVIS II power switch and then turn on its Prototyping Board Power switch at
the top right near the power indicator.
6. Launch the NI ELVISmx Software and run the NI ELVIS II Oscilloscope
7. Set up the scope with the following changes:
a. Channel 0 coupling control must be DC
b. Channel 0 Scale control must be at 2V/Div
8. Activate the scope’s signal channel 1 input to view the AM signal output as well as the message
signal.
Result:

Analysis
This experiment shows the result of amplitude modulating the carrier with the message. The modulated
carrier’s amplitude varies with the unmodulated amplitude. It also shows that the AM signal’s envelopes
are the same shape as the message.
