ENGINEERING MECHANICS II BONUS HELP

Superposition
#10-2 (mod) The bracket shown in Figure P10-2 has a rectangular cross section of
18mm wide x 75 mm high. It is securely attached to the wall. Compute
the maximum stress in the bracket if the load is 4400N.
Ans: σA = 80.66 MPa, σB = 1.629 MPa, σC = -77.4 MPa

Deflection in Beams
#9-9.E An Aluminum Association Standard I-Beam, I8 x 6.181, carries a
uniformly distributed load of 1125 lb/ft over a 10 foot span. Compute the
deflection at the centre of the beam.
Ans: - 0.424 inches

Columns and Buckling

#11-6 For a PIPE 25STD (A 1 inch diameter schedule 40) steel pipe used
as a column, determine the critical load if it is 2.05 m long. The material
is similar to AISI 1020 hot rolled steel. Compute the practical critical load
for EACH of the four end configurations as described in Figure 11-3
Ans: Pcr pinned = 17673 N, Pcr fixed-pinned = 27615.26 N, Pcr fixed =
41831.19 N, Pcr free = 4007.66 N

#11-17 A piston rod on a shock absorber is 12mm in diameter and has a

maximum length of 190mm outside the shock absorber body. The rod is
made out of 1141 OQT 1300. Consider one end to be pinned and the
other end fixed. What axial compressive load on the rod would be one
third of the critical buckling load?
Ans: 15.1 kN

Pressure Vessels
Ex 5 A spherical gas container made of steel has a 6 m outer diameter
and a wall thickness of 6 mm. If the internal pressure is 600 kPa,
determine the stress in the container.
hoop = 149.85 MPa

#12-11M Oxygen on a spacecraft is carried at a pressure of 70.0 MPa in order to

minimize the volume required. The spherical vessel has an outside
diameter of 250mm and a wall thickness of 18 mm. Compute the
maximum tangential and radial stresses in the sphere.
Ans: 2 = 212.0 MPa, 3 = -70.0 MPa
