Epi means above, and gastrium means stomach.

Epigastrium is that area of the abdomen, just below


where lower ribs from both sides meet. It is located below the sternum, in the midline. If you go tracing
down the bony part in the middle of your chest, the moment you feel the soft musculature of the
abdomen, you enter epigastrium. This area lies above the level of the stomach. In duodenal/gastric ulcer
and several other conditions, pain (and tenderness) is felt here.
