This document describes the procedure for conducting a boiling test, also known as a stripping test, to determine the adhesion of bitumen to aggregates. The procedure involves:
1) Preparing a sample of aggregates between 8-11mm in size.
2) Coating the aggregates with bitumen modified with an anti-stripping agent and mixing thoroughly.
3) Boiling the coated aggregates in water for 10 minutes.
4) Assessing the level of bitumen still adhered to the aggregates after boiling, expressed as a percentage.

12697-11 PROCEDURE FOR BOILING TEST (STRIPPING TEST)
1. Take a homogeneous sample of aggregates through quartering;
2. Divide the aggregates using sieves and take the fraction 8/11mm; 3. Wash 1 Kg of these aggregates to remove the dust and the filler; 4. Put the washed aggregates in oven at 155°C (5°C more than the mixing temperature) for 2 hours (until the aggregates become dry and reach the temperature); 5. Put the bitumen in oven at the same temperature of the aggregates; 6. After 2 hours take out the aggregates from the oven and weigh a sample of 200 g; 7. Take the bitumen from the oven, weigh almost 100g and add 0,3% (or the recommended rate) of the antistripping agent on the bitumen weight (0,3g if the bitumen weight is 100g); 8. Add 4,2g (2,1% on the aggregates weight) of the bitumen modified at the aggregates; (use the same quantity also for the bitumen without antistripping agent); 9. Mix energically until the aggregates become completely covered by the bitumen. 10. Put the mix on a piece of oiled paper and wait until it becomes cold; 11. Take a beaker of about 1 liter;
12. Fill the beaker with water (800 ml), put it on a
hot plate and wait until the water boils; 13. Put the mix inside a net that should have the dimension as in the picture and put it inside the beaker when the water is boiling; 14. Lay the mix inside the boiling water for 10 minutes; 15. After 10 minutes take out the mix, and put it on a piece of oiled paper; 16. When the mix will be dry, make a visual analysis about the covering of the aggregates; 17. Express the covering in percent, using step of about 5%;
