“Our designs aren’t just beautiful and

world in 1986 to find inspiration and skilled
artisans to make the high-quality designs he
dreamed of.
“Our aim is to bring happiness into people’s
lives by creating for them light, bright, vibrant
and happy interiors where they can find
refuge from the busy world of markets and

AUJOURD’HUI

Though the company

is of British origin, their
designs are growing on
a global level and they
now have a large presence
in Paris. Their intricate
Chinoiserie designs, painted
on silk, Xuan and gilded
paper and even 22ct gold
leaf, encompass the luxury
and glamour of French
style. The designs pull from
Chinese, Japanese and
Korean influence, but some
of their scenic vistas are
inspired by 19th-century
French Papiers Peints
Panoramiques.
From traditional 18th-
century techniques and
designs to contemporary
preferences, de Gournay has
the ability to customize any
of its patterns as everything
is hand-painted to order.

to realism or abstract design,
this wallpaper will bring

California, proving that all you need
is some good food and natural
accents to throw a winter get-together
to remember.
France is one of the largest producers
of wine in the world, so a vineyard
theme is an appropriate way to bring
French entertaining to your home. “An
intimate backyard setting is my favorite
way to entertain guests,” Janet says.
Plain white china plates on braided
placemats are adorned with linen
napkins and fresh garlands of rosemary,
hand-tied with a blush velvet ribbon for
a dainty accent.
“Dressing up your dinner napkins
with fresh flowers or greenery will make
your table smell amazing,” Janet says.
It’s also a simple way to add color and
texture to plain dishes.
The centerpiece is a simple yet
stunning arrangement of eucalyptus
and olive branches and figs, with some
white garden roses incorporated for an
effortless and whimsical look.
“Avoid placing flowers symmetrically

made from empty wine bottles add
height to the centerpiece and denote
the table’s winery theme.
“You can purchase clear bottles

Janet created a wine and cheese

An assortment of cheeses, sultana

She placed fresh figs among the

NO MATTER IF YOU ARE A
MEMBER OF AN ARISTOCRATIC
FAMILY OR SIMPLY A DESIGN
LOVER with a panache for French
style, the opulent stylings of Parisian
apartments and southern châteaux
aren’t just the things of dreams. Bring
home the drama of French design
with moody hues and rich accents for
one-of-a-kind beauty.

STATELY APROPOS
To create a sense of grandeur, rethink
what it takes for an element to stand
as the focal point of a room. Opt for
impressive scale and err on the side
of luxe. Architectural ornamental
moldings in the form of cornices,
crowns, ceiling medallions and layers
of trim work set the stage for a room
that is anything but ordinary. Even
a seemingly simple element such as
a curtain rod can be used to convey
beauty and elegance. Hung high
to allow for draperies to cascade
gracefully to the floorboards, use the
rod to make a statement by opting for
eye-catching finials.

GILDED GLAMOUR
The glisten of hand-painted accents
on an antique table, the gleam of
leafing on a chaise or nail head trim
on dining room chairs—a little gold
can go a long way. Along with the
high contrast of black and white, gold
accents elevate deep-hued designs by
adding elegance.
It is the fine details—sparkling trays,
intricately designed folding screens,
carefully chosen upholstery—that
make these designs truly come to life.

CUISINE

NEVER
OUTDATED A CLASSICALLY INSPIRED FRENCH-STYLE
KITCHEN STANDS THE TEST OF TIME.
BY MICHELLE MASTRO
PHOTOGRAPHY BY AMY BARTLAM PHOTOGRAPHY

FRENCH STYLE IS ALWAYS IN

FASHION. Its seemingly effortless
elegance combines natural features with
Old World charm, making the look
timeless. Distressed cabinets, provincial
dining tables and marble countertops—
all hallmarks of French style—embrace
functionality while mixing materials found
in nature to construct a space that feels
collected rather than designed.

SMALL SPACES
“Our ultimate goal for this space was to
create a luxurious yet livable kitchen that
would surpass trends and feel classic and
chic for years to come,” says Kate Lester,
interior designer and owner of Kate Lester
Interiors, Los Angeles, California.
The homeowners hired Kate to assist
in giving their kitchen French flair with
modern functionality, as the original
kitchen was true to the French era in all
the wrong ways. Purchased in the 1970s,
the Los Angeles home reflected that era’s
style with its small galley kitchen, closed-
off spaces and lack of light. Kate knew she
had to create “an open-concept floor plan

where our clients could cook, dine and FRENCH STYLE, but a few hints of gingham,

the classic look. Auburn floral rugs run along both
sides of the room, adding a delicate touch to the
rich tone of the stained wood island.

and functionality while still appealing to
French taste. Kate loves to use traditional
plumbing fixtures and fireclay farmhouse
sinks in her kitchen designs. Turning to
the classics helps keep kitchen designs
fresh well into the future.

THE PATINA of the antiqued cabinetry

adds to the warmth of the kitchen's wood

and beautiful pendants keep the design
feeling fresh and welcoming.

AUTHENTIC MATERIALS
The kitchen appears to have evolved
over time. The tumbled limestone was
not a part of the original home, but after
it was added, Kate says it felt like it had
always been there and had simply been
re-exposed.
“Going to the classics for inspiration
will always ensure longevity of design,”
Kate says. Anyone can aspire to the
look and feel of a French-style kitchen.
Farmhouse sinks and bridge faucets—
essentials of the look—are now available
at many different price points, she says.
To get the look, Kate suggests paneling
all your appliances. “There is a massive
refrigerator, freezer, dishwater and trash
area in this kitchen, but the paneling
creates the illusion they aren’t there,”
she says. Visual distractions like stainless
steel are not found in French design.
The French-style kitchen is ideal for

CHÂTEAU DES BRIOTTIÈRES,
NESTLED IN THE ANJOU REGION
OF FRANCE, has belonged to the same
family for six generations. The castle’s
history spans nearly six centuries—
stretching out like an Alexandre Dumas
novel, spanning revolution and loss, and
with a character list as complex as that
of “The Count of Monte Cristo.”

FAMILY HISTORY
The story of the Château des
Briottières dates back to the early 15th
century, when it belonged to the Mergot
family. The wife of the castle’s second
owner added a chapel dedicated to
Saint Bonaventure. The estate was later
handed to Guillaume Lesrat, a general
lieutenant, who kept the property
until the revolution. Sons and cousins
continuously passed down the home until
it was eventually given to Monique de
Mieulle. Only after this did the castle fall
into the hands of its current landlords—
Monique’s son, François de Valbray and
his wife, Hedwige, who moved to the
castle in 1979.

Most of the furnishings at
Château des Briottières are pieces
that have long been in the family’s
possession. Over the years,
many of the pieces have been
restructured by expert cabinet
makers and craftsmen. To ensure
the heirlooms would be intact for
future generations, François and
Hedwige continued this work.
However, when it came to making
certain style choices, the couple
erred ever-so-slightly on the side
of modern livability.
“We live in the castle; we
did not want the dwelling to
appear as a hotel, but to have
a family atmosphere,” François
says. This desire is shown in the
couple’s choice of fabrics for
their reupholstering projects, for
which they turned to high-quality
materials and designs from Pierre
Frey, Rubelli and Lelievre.

PRESERVATION AND
PERSONALITY
To put their personal touch
on the castle’s interior design,
François and Hedwige were
inspired by the 18th century—
but with a contemporary touch.
They added a slight twist to the
traditional design through their
selection of accessories such as
lamps, pillows and canapés (sofas).
The rooms are furnished as
private apartments, each with a

Cabell Design Studio, it was a
chance to explore the intersection
of functionality and aesthetics—
all with French flair.
“The client desired an interior

style and the importance of accommo-

dating family life, Elizabeth transformed
a four-story Charlotte, North Carolina,
estate into an artful, grounded home
that reflects the spirit of the family that
inhabits it.

GRACIOUS LIVING
To start, the living room was an empty
shell with glorious ceilings and wood
floors, and lots of doors. “This room
was loaded with doors,” Elizabeth says.
“Doors to the family room, doors to the
entrance and doors to the exterior poor-
house.” In order to balance these entries
and exits, Elizabeth knew all the furni-
ture would have to be floated, and she
decided to permanently close off one of
the arches leading into the family room
with a pair of French pharmacy doors
that she and the homeowners discovered
on an antiquing trip in Pennsylvania.
“Closing off this opening allowed for the

fabricated for the room,” Elizabeth says. “They
are a traditional silk design with butterflies
and flowers on a pale blue background.”
She had them lined with a heavy fringe
and double interlining to add weight
and protect them against the sun.
“They are simply gorgeous,” she says.

PRINCESS BLUE
Elizabeth particularly loves the blue
bedroom. “It is a true reflection of
my design aesthetic,” she says. “I
was given free reign here and was
simply told to work with the Aubus-
son rug, which came to this project
via another home of the owners.
From there, it was all go, go, go!”
An ash bed made by French
Heritage, with its simple carvings
on the head and footboard, adds a
touch of French country style to the
room, balancing the other luxurious
details, like the ornate canopy. “The
room is decidedly feminine in its
expression,” Elizabeth says. “We
fabricated the canopy for the bed,
to the delight of the homeowner
wife. The boys and husband weren’t
as excited, but she and I were just
in fits over it. After all, who doesn’t
want to be a princess—if even for
one day?”
To complete the room, Elizabeth
added in a chair and screen found
at an antiques store. The screen
features a whitewash finish and
beautiful, old carved wood, while
the chair, with its original velvet
damask covering worn through in
several places, emanates a sense of
history and romance. A tapestry
with a light aesthetic and just the
right colors was styled in a beauti-
ful tableau with two antique cane
chairs purchased in Italy, creating a
small sitting area for guests to enjoy.
With her own appreciation of the
French aesthetic and understanding
of a family’s need for functionality,
Elizabeth created the perfect blend
of the two.

UPON FIRST LOOKING AT CANTERBURY,

constructed in stately brick and residing in Richmond,
Virginia’s Windsor Farms neighborhood, it’s apparent that
the Colonial-style home belongs on the Eastern seaboard.
Designed by renowned architect William Bottomley
in the early 1930s, it was recently in need of care and
restoration to repair over eight decades of wear and tear.
That’s when interior designer Suzanne Kasler was brought
in to work her magic.
Suzanne started her interior design firm 20 years ago,
focusing on residential design in Atlanta, Georgia,
and beyond. “I found that in the South there is such an
influence of amazing architects and designers who focus
on classical design,” she says. “What I brought was a
modern aesthetic with a foundation of tradition that really
seems to resonate.”

William was commissioned

which was not an easy task.
The interiors were decidedly

that they didn’t display his

alongside Madison Spencer

homage to the history of the
interiors, but made them even
more glorious through stunning

“It was a two-year project.

helped furnish the refined dining room.
Antiques, contemporary pieces with classic
sensibilities and custom creations combine
for a luxurious space. A longtime favorite
paint of Suzanne’s, Limoges Blue from Dulux,
graces the walls. “It was applied in five coats
with a strie technique,” she says.

served as the creative director
at Oscar de la Renta Home for
10 years.
“I grew up in the South and
have a nod to traditionalism
in my work, but I have been
working in New York for the
last 20-odd years.” Miles says
his mentors inspired his style,
which he describes as “tradi-
tionalism with some fantasy
and drama mixed in.”

MODERN AND
HISTORIC
The Boxwood project, which
took three years to complete,
maintained many of the
aspects that were unmistakably
Shutze. The signature details
are the perfect proportions—
grand yet cozy. But this
house is unique in his oeuvre,
which is mostly Italianate,
a Neo-Renaissance form
of architecture.
While staying true to the
home’s historic features, the
designer provided much-
needed updates to it.
“The bathrooms and kitchen
were all gutted and redone to
come up to modern times,”
Miles says.
WINTER 2017

ALL THE CURTAINS IN THE HOME were custom-made,

including these floral curtains in Robert Kime fabric that add a pop of
pattern to the library. They pair well with the sophisticated color palette
and traditional chairs.

“The original bathrooms felt a
little dated,” he says. “Bathrooms
have come a long way since 1929,
and while nice for a house of
this quality, they did not hold up
to today’s standards. We tried
to make them look like they
had been there since the house
was built.”
The designer relied upon
several sources when sourcing the
décor: a mix of antiques shops,
auctions and custom-made pieces.
“Christie’s, Sotheby’s, Gerald
Bland, John Rosselli and Nial
Smith, to name a few,” Miles says.

A TOUCH OF CHINA
In the home, Miles married
classic and clever through tradi-
tional touches and inspirations
from the East.
“Chinese works with every-
thing, and we wanted to reference
the Chinese motifs inside that are
used outside, like the zinc pagoda
over the side door, so that the
interior had the same pastiche as
the exterior.” Miles enjoys work-
ing with Chinese themes because
of the style’s versatility. “It is very
clean and simple usually, and
has a modern feel. That is why it
works with a lot.”
Although there are several
design approaches represented
throughout the estate, many traits
are intrinsically French. “French
design is in the attitude of interi-
[opposite] ors, which is really a mix that the

FOR THE LADIES’ ROOM, designer Courtnay Tartt Elias was inspired
by the fact that the homeowner loves to drink champagne with her friends.
“I thought this was the perfect place for them, off of the kitchen,” she says.
All the furniture was in a warehouse the owner had, so Courtnay was able to

WHEN COURTNAY TARTT ELIAS,
PRINCIPAL DESIGNER AND OWNER
OF CREATIVE TONIC, was selected
to design a remodel of a classic Georgian
1939 Broadacres home in Houston, Texas,
she was presented with an exciting—and
unique—project: to utilize an extensive
collection of antique French and French-
inspired furnishings and lighting. These
items had originally been purchased for a
new home that was still in the architectural
planning phase; the Broadacres home was
intended to be a provisional residence
while another home was completed.
However, once Courtnay presented her
vision for the “temporary” home’s design,
things changed.

“The Francophile homeowner fell
so in love that the new construction
project was soon abandoned,”
Courtnay says. She embarked on a
creative journey steeped in history,
finding places for the beloved antiques
in rooms inspired by their rich origins.

A DRESSING EXPERIENCE
Marie Antoinette’s Petit Trianon
château inspired the ‘hers’ custom
master-closet suite (a series of halls
and small rooms were transformed
into separate ‘his’ and ‘hers’ bath
and closet areas). Courtnay took
three rooms and a small closet,
and opened everything up to
accommodate a gracious dressing
room and bathing space.
“I renovated the entire space so
the homeowner could have the full
dressing experience here,” Courtnay
says. “She loves to drink champagne,
so the room is designed in champagne
tones.” Custom-mixed Sherwin-
Williams paint was used to create an
ethereal feel, while hand-glazed and

was entirely resurfaced, giving it a new twist. New
Waterstone faucets were added and cabinets were
hand-painted with floral motifs. A pewter island

unique, unlacquered brass faucet.

gilded details by Segreto Finishes added
romantic beauty to the dressing-room walls,
bathing area and closet. Since no dressing
area is complete without a vanity, Courtnay
designed one complete with a small
Herbeau faucet.
“I love to put little makeup sinks in
vanities,” she says. “You don’t have to get
up and rinse your hands across the room
when you have makeup on your fingers.
It’s all part of the dressing experience.”
Antiqued-gold mirrors, Sheryl Wagner

DINING IN OPULENCE
Dining is an opulent affair in the luxuriously
appointed dining room. Natural light
reflects off a variety of exquisite textiles and
finishes from an expansive bay window that
was original to the home. “It’s one of my
favorite rooms,” Courtnay says.
To start, the floors were torn out and
replaced with a new Versailles-patterned

and the tiny Herbeau sink to wash her hands,
the homeowner has everything she needs for
flawless makeup application at her vanity. Courtnay
envisioned this area as being a feminine place
for bonding. “I wanted the homeowner to have a
beautiful vanity where she could sit with her friends
and young daughter,” she says.

TO VISIT ELWAY HALL IN
VIRGINIA IS TO TAKE A STEP
BACK IN TIME, to a place where
people gathered in excitement before
heading out for the hunt, formal dinners
were set with countless fine dishes, and
opulence was ever in vogue.
When interior designer Barry Dixon
and his partner Michael Schmidt, who
has since passed, made the leap from
city life in Washington, DC, to the
stunning Virginia hunt countryside
in 1999, they fell in love with Elway
Hall. The 1907 Edwardian-style house
boasts 10 bedrooms and 17 fireplaces,
and a history the couple desired to see
preserved. As they settled into their new
home, the couple sought to celebrate its
rich ancestry while still enjoying it as the
setting for modern life.

LEARNING FROM THE PAST

Barry considers it an honor to be
Elway Hall’s current custodian.
“I felt I needed to listen to the house
as so much has happened here over the
years,” he says. “It is in the heart of the
Virginia hunt country, so there have
been huge parties here—hunt breakfasts,
weddings and massive family gatherings.
Each room had a purpose and a name,
and I wanted to acknowledge this, but at
the same time modernize it and make it
a livable space for us.”
Barry’s passion for the house, its
history and its community is apparent in
the stunning attention to detail in each
room, passageway and hidden nook.
Since arriving, Barry has been

CREATIVE
THINKING
WITH PRESERVATION IN MIND, THESE CLEVER
TRICKS RENOVATED THE HOME’S FLOOR
PLAN WITHOUT MAKING ANY PERMANENT
ALTERATIONS.

When Barry and Michael moved into Elway Hall,

they were keenly aware of the hierarchy in which
the home was originally designed. Looking to meet
their more modern needs, they didn’t want any room
to be more important than another. So, the couple
made the decision to remove some of the home’s
interior doors to open up the space.

“We wrapped each of the doors up carefully to store

them for future owners to use if they wanted to
restore the space to its original form,” Barry says.

They also changed the intended use of some of the

rooms, swapping the furniture in the dining room
and small parlor to create a more intimate dining
area, which, in turn, gave them more space for their
lounge and offered more convenient access to the
butler’s pantry and kitchen.

considerations in design, always, is
a sense of place,” they write. But
in order to successfully mix new
with old, it’s important to identify
characteristics that make up the
space’s identity.
This historic Houston home boasts
grand, formal architecture—a soft
palette enables less décor to do more.
A modern-art canvas reinvents the
room’s regal air; an objet d’art serves
as a contemporary accent.
Lavish décor can easily overwhelm,
but this home shifts classic to
current by focusing on traditional
furnishings—straight, linear design
for a more modern style. This
contemporary twist on classic French
design proves that antiques should
be as free of clutter as the floor plan.
“We embrace a suave historicism
with exciting new takes on tradition,”
the authors write. The key to giving
traditional fixtures and furniture
a modern touch is maintaining a
minimalist tone.

A COLONIAL-ST YLE HOME IN VIRGINIA

is not likely to come to mind as a prime example
of French design, but thanks to the work of
interior designer Suzanne Kasler,
Canterbury, in Richmond’s Windsor Farms
neighborhood, is just that.
Distinctly baroque, Canterbury’s drawing
room showcases an opulent Louis XVI giltwood
mirror set above an equally sophisticated table.
Suzanne infused the home with the owner’s
collection of continental and antique paintings,
but brought their appreciation for French design
to life through carefully curated additions.
According to Suzanne, the design came
together by layering the pieces from the client’s
collections with French influences, such as
“gilded Parisian tables, dressmaker details and a
very French color palette.”
