Task:

1. After actuating control switch S3 (continuous cycle), the piston rod of a double-acting cylinder Z1
extends and after reaching the front end position retracts again. This procedure repeats itself as
long as switch S3 remains “ON”.
2. Additional requirement: after briefly actuating push button S0, the cylinder should extend and
retract once (single cycle).
3. It should be possible to reduce the extension speed.
4. An electrically controlled 5/2 directional control impulse valve is used as an actuator. Cylinder
switches are available as limit switches.
5. The functional diagram is to be drawn up, the pneumatic circuit diagram supplemented; the
electric circuit diagram is to be drawn up using the symbols of electrical equipment according to
DIN/ISO.

Example of application: “Pressing-in device”

Task procedure

1. Two bolts are pressed in by a cylinder in a

pressing-in device. The bolts are put in by
hand.
2. The procedure is fully automated: after
actuating the start button S0, cylinder 1
clamps the workpiece.
3. For safety reasons the clamping cylinder
must clamp the workpiece until the cylinder
that does the pressing-in returns to its back
end position.
4. Electrically controlled impulse valves (bi-
stable) are used as actuators.
5. The signalers are electric cylinder switches
(magnetic field sensors).
6. The extension speed of both cylinders
should be infinitely adjustable.
7. The detached representation of the electric
circuit diagram is to be drawn up using the
symbols of electrical equipment according to
DIN/ISO

Instructions to student

1. Please prepare a lab report based on the guideline provided as in task 3 (Functional diagram,
Pneumatic circuit diagram, Electric circuit diagram).
2. All the results must be acknowledged by the instructor
