1. a) Derive the following Maxwell’s equation

̅
∂D
̅∙𝐷
(i) ∇ ̅ = 𝜌 and (ii) ∇̅ × H
̅ = J̅ +
∂t
b) Prove Coulomb’s law using Maxwell’s relations.
c) Show that the velocity of monochromatic electromagnetic wave in a vacuum is 𝐶 = 1/√∈0 𝜇0 .

2. a) What is Poynting’s vector? Give its physical interpretation, and mention its unit.
b) Deduce Poynting’s theorem and show that it is consequence of energy conservation principle.
c) Show that electromagnetic waves are transverse.

3 a) Derive the wave equation for electromagnetic wave propagating through a conducting media,
and also derive the expressions for phase velocity and refractive index.
b) Define skin depth. Calculate the skin depth of sea water at a frequency of 58.6 KHz. The
conductivity of sea water at that frequency is 4.3 mho/m. (consider μ = μ0).

4. a) What is wave guide? Show + = for an electromagnetic wave propagating between
𝜆2𝑔 𝜆2𝑐 𝜆20
two perfectly conducting parallel plates.
b) What guide wavelength does 10cm radiation (free space wavelength) exhibit in a rectangular
guide whose width is 6cm? Assume the dominant mode. What is the cut off wavelength for the
guide?
