Effect of Classroom Scarcity to Selected ANHS Junior High School Students

Learning environment is thought to play an important and valuable role in student’s


focus, memory, motivation and overall academic performance. According to U.S. Department of
Education (2004), every student deserves to go to a school with a positive environment which
consists of conditions (such as heathy air to breathe, peaceful and quiet environment, etc.) that
promotes learning. However, this immediate need is often neglected and ignored.

Classrooms are where majority of learning processes and activities happen. A place
supposedly should be conducive to development of student’s cognitive abilities, mental as well
as social skills, however in majority of school in the Philippines this isn’t the case. Lack of
classrooms and learning facilities had long been a problem and yet had been often overlooked.
As a result, it is a natural occurrence that in overcrowded schools, a large number of students are
stationed inside a small classroom therefore limiting the quality and the quantity of interaction
between teachers and students affecting learning efficiency. In worst cases, some classrooms are
even divided into two classes creating an unhealthy noisy environment which has an overall
negative impact to student’s learning and academic aspect.
