The Forest Research Institute of Malaysia (FRIM) is an interesting spot which gives us an insight into
the country’s tropical forests. Genting Highlands Resort offers fun and excitement for the whole family.
Fraser’s Hill is an ideal retreat for weary travelers. Then there is Port Dickson for those who love waters.
Kuala Selangor and Kampung Kuantan are famous for bird watching and seeing fireflies.
If Malacca is loved for its historical importance, thus the royal town of Seri Menanti in Kuala Pilah
district should interest folks the same. The royal town of Seri Menanti, Negeri Sembilan is located at the
foothills of a mountain range about 35 kilometers from Seremban and 11 kilometers from Kuala Pilah
Town.
A famous attraction is the Seri Menanti Palace built in 1905 without the use of a single nail. It is now
known as the Muzium Di Raja (Istana Lama) Seri Menanti. The four-storey building is the work of two
local carpenters namely Kahar and Taib. This palace once housed the Sekolah Menengah Agama Tinggi
until 1964 and thereafter was left vacant until 1992.

You had received a letter from your cousin. Read the letter and answer the questions below.
Dear Julia,
I received your letter a fortnight ago. Sorry for the late reply. Nice to hear that you had a great holiday in
Sabah.
As for me, I enjoyed my holidays in Pangkor Island with my family. Dad drove the car to Lumut. Then we
boarded a ferry to the island. We loved every minute of the ride as the scenery was breathtaking. Upon
reaching our destination, we checked into the Royal Casuarina Hotel. We rested for a while before dinner.
The next day, Dad rented a van. We visited Sungai Pinang Kecil, a fishing village. We saw fishermen
mending their nets and stopped to watch several women drying seafood delicacies like cuttlefish, shrimp and
anchovies. Mother took this opportunity to buy some salted fish.
Later, we went to Sungai Pinang Besar. Here, the villagers were repairing and cleaning their boats. I must
say that watching boats being painted was an interesting experience.
The following day, we made a trip to the Dutch Fort at Telok Gadung. We spent hours there taking
photographs. Then, we went to the beach where my brother and I collected seashells.
All in all, it was a tiring journey but we had a wonderful time. I must say that it was fun to do things
together as a family and I hope to visit Pangkor again.
Your cousin,
Fauziah

Last week, my family and I spent an enjoyable holiday in Langkawi Island. We left for Kuala Perlis jetty
immediately after breakfast and took a ferry to reach Kuah jetty. The whole one-hour trip was really an
exciting journey as it was my first time travelling on a ferry.
We had a three-day and two-night stay at a chalet which was booked earlier by my father. The
accommodation was reasonable and affordable. This two-room chalet was located nearby the beach. The
chalet was very cozy and comfortable for it was equipped with all the basic necessities such as the air
conditioner, water heater, a microwave and a flat-screen TV.
Upon our arrival, we pampered ourselves at the white sandy beach which was just a stone throw
away from our chalet. We swam happily and we were excited to see colourful school of fish through the
crystal-clear water. During dinner, we enjoyed scrumptious seafood at the Mesra Restaurant. Although the
seafood was costly, it was really satisfying.
On the following day, we took a ride on cable car. The scenery from the peak of Mat Cincang Mount
was breathtaking. It was quite thrilling to see scenic panoramic seaview. After lunch, my father brought us to
the legendary Mahsuri Tomb and followed by a visit to Beras Terbakar. We went back to the chalet before
dusk.
On the last day of our trip, we went to Kuah town for shopping. My mother bought a few sets of
exclusive dining ware while we spent the money on chocolates, t-shirts and not forgotten souvenirs for the
loved ones. The shopping was really pleasing. Around noon, we took a ferry back to Kuala Perlis before
heading home. The trip was really exhausting but for sure, it was one of the most enjoyable and memorable
moments for me.

Last Saturday, my family and I went to the seaside. We left home at 7 a.m. and reached Port Dickson
at about 8 a.m. As soon as we reached there, my sister and I changed into our swimsuit. When we got into the
water, we screamed because the water was very cold. Soon, the water got warmer and we enjoyed ourselves
swimming and playing happily in the water.
My younger sister could not swim very well, so after awhile, she decided to collect beautifulseashells.
She needed seashells because she wanted to make a picture with them. My father helped her to collect a lot
of pretty seashells.
When it was time for lunch, we spread a mat under the shady tree and helped mother to put out all
the delicious food. Mother had made fried rice, fried chicken and sandwiches. We even had cake for dessert.
We also had canned drinks which were niceandcold.
After lunch, we rested for awhile and listened to music. My father and father had a short nap. When it
was not sohot, we decided to have a swim in the sea before leaving. Soon, it was time to pack and go home.
Although we were tired, we had enjoyed ourselvess. We hoped to go there again soon.

Water is the most valuable gift Mother Nature has given to mankind. Unfortunately, the world’s
natural water supply is becoming more and more polluted. The main causes of water pollution
are oil spills, farming wastes, industrial wastes and acid rain.
Oil spills occur when huge oil tankers have leaks. The oil destroys many forms of marine
life. All the fish, whales, dolphins, plankton and coral depend on clean water to survive. Many
fish and plants die after such accidents as the oil spill may take years to clean up. If the spill
occurs near land, the oil will be washed up onto the beach affecting sea birds and animals on the
land. When a sea bird is covered with oil, its feathers become heavy and sticky. It may lose its
ability to fly and survive.
Nowadays, many kinds of pesticides are used in farming. The rain washes pesticides and
fertilizer from the fields to the rivers and oceans. Some farmers dump their animal wastes in the
river as they do not know how to get rid of the waste properly. Industrial wastes are even more
dangerous. They are acidic and very harmful to humans. Factories often dump their industrial
wastes straight into the sea. The fish drink this polluted water which in turn will affect humans.
Some people even transport drums of industrial wastes and dump them into rivers although this
is against the law.
Gases and fumes from cars, factories and power stations are dissolved in the rain drops to
produce a weak acid. This acid rain pollutes the oceans and destroys forests. Acid rain can be
carried from one country to another by wind.

Georgetown
Georgetown, the capital of Pulau Pinang (also known as Penang Island), is located at the north-
eastern tip of the island. Skyscrapers, single-storeyed residential houses, modern apartment buildings and
slums are found in this city. Its population of more than one million is made up of the major ethnic groups in
Malaysia. The island is linked to the mainland by the famous Penang Bridge which is 13 kilometres long. There
is also a ferry service between the main and the island.
Pulau Pinang is a small island and because of its rapid development, there are many environmental
problems. There is not enough land and so land has to be reclaimed from the sea. Much of the reclaimed land
is just a few feet above sea level.
Georgetown itself is located in one of the lowest lying areas on the island. Many parts of the city
experience flash floods after a downpour. Flooding in Pulau Pinang is a serious problem now, especially in
areas such as Jalan P.Ramlee in the city centre. Traffic comes to a standstill and there are long queues for
buses and taxis.
Another major problem is traffic congestion. Traffic congestion in the city is also caused by:
Pulau Pinang needs to take care of its environment and pay more attention to these problems.

Sample Answer:
A survey was carried out among 200 students of SMK Kupang on how they
spent their last school holidays. They had carried out a number of activities.
About 70 students spent their time watching movies or television. This shows
that they enjoyed watching movies or television as a form of entertainment.
Another 50 students loved reading during the school break especially novels
as they did not have much time to spend on reading on other days. Some of them
also spent time surfing the internet for suitable books and reading materials online.
35 students went camping and hiking either with their families or friends.
These students love the outdoors and some of them have been found to be actively
involved in camping activities organised by the school.
Working part time also seemed to be a choice for 25 students who wanted to
make some pocket money in order to buy new school uniforms and shoes without
burdening their parents.
Some of the students went for picnics with their families. About 15 of them
spent time with their families at beaches or waterfalls nearby. Another 5 students
were lucky enough to go on holidays overseas like Perth and Ontario.
In conclusion, some of the students had spent their holidays wisely like
reading books and working part time. Those who spent time watching movies or
television may want a break from books after working hard for almost a year.
Nevertheless, it is advisable for all students to do some revision so they do not forget
what they had studied.

A very good morning to our beloved English teacher, En. Salim and fellow friends, I am here to give a
speech on the Teachers’ Day celebration held last week. First and foremost, I would like to thank En.Salim, for
giving me this opportunity to address all of you present here.
Last Monday our school celebrated Teachers’ Day. The students came early and gathered for an
official assembly at 7.30 a.m in the school hall. The teacher on duty, Pn. Leela made sure all the students lined
up in their respective forms. First, we sang the national anthem followed by our school song. The teachers also
sang a song entitled “ Kami Guru Malaysia”.
After that, the principal En. Salim was called upon on the stage to deliver his speech. During his
speech, he advised the students to respect and appreciate teachers’ contributions. He also stated that the aim
of the celebration was to show appreciation to their teachers.
Next, the school head prefect, Kumar from 5 Marikh gave a speech. He thanked all the teachers for
their dedication and hard work. This was followed by giving away tokens of appreciation to all the teachers by
the school prefects. It was given in the form of fresh flowers and gift boxes.
Later, some activities were carried out among teachers and students. These activities included games
like football for men teachers and netball for the lady teachers. It was an exciting event for both the teachers
and students. Soon after that, class parties were held in the respective classrooms. Some of the students
brought food from home.
In short, it was really an unforgettable and meaningful day for the teachers and students. That’s all, thank you
for lending me your ears.

A very good morning to our lovely English teacher Puan Lily, and my fellow friends. Today, I would like
to talk about ‘Open Day’. Open Day is a special event which involves the teachers, students and parents at
large. It is a spectacular event for there are numerous activities and sales going on throughout the day.
As for my school, the Open Day came to pass on 7 October 2012. As early as 7.30 in the morning, the
teachers and students set up the stalls around the school field. The school hall was decorated to the finest for
the closing ceremony. Around 8 in the morning, parents, family members and guardians of the students
swarmed all over the school areas.
There were many activities held such as karaoke competition, road safety exhibition, songs
dedication, martial arts demonstration, cooking competition and not forgotten indoor games competition.
The activities were opened to all, including the visitors. Most parents spent their times taking part in the
cooking competition for they could spend quality time together along with their children.
Besides the happening activities, booths and stalls were crowded too. There were various types of
foodstuff and merchandise sold at reasonable prices. Food stalls were the most visited stand for the vendors
were selling scrumptious and mouth-watering food, snacks and desserts. People had to queue up for quite a
long time to fill their stomachs.
Since each family brought along family members to the Open Day, the school was packed with
children and teenagers. They spent their times by joining the karaoke and indoor games competitions for the
prizes awaited were quite tempting. When noon was approaching, the number of visitors was decreased and
approximately at 3 o’clock in the afternoon, the prize-giving ceremony took place at the school hall.
Once the ceremony ended, most parents and family members left for home. There were only a few
teachers and students left to ensure that the rubbish was littered properly.

Your school celebrated Merdeka Day with a variety of activities. Write a recount on the celebration. Use
the pictures and notes below to help you write the recount.
ANSWER:
Last week, I had a wonderful time celebrating Merdeka Day with many friends in school. As usual,
my school held our yearly celebrations. However, this year the show of patriotism among the students
gained pace with a three-day event. Being purely a student initiative, the Merdeka celebration aimed to
spark the awareness of unity among the students and I think we succeeded to a certain extent.
The carnival kicked off with a food sale where tempting traditional delights like bubur cha cha,
vadai and yau cha kuih were sold by the English Language Society. Delicious cupcakes and brownies
added variety. Dishes like nasi lemak, nyonya laksa, Indian chicken curry with nasi biryani and Devil’s
Curry were popular items with the students and teachers.
After lunch, we adjourned to the Hall for the much anticipated cultural performance. The
students from the Drama Club performed a very graceful multiracial dance. Besides that, they wore
colorful traditional costumes. Apart from this, a short sketch highlighted the varied and wonderful
Malaysia way of life. A mixture of Malay, Chinese, Indian, Iban and Kadazan dances caught our
imagination with their magnificent performance.
Other that that, a patriotic contest was held in the basketball court. Participants shouted,
Merdeka! Merdeka! in the most creative way and then answered questions on Malaysian history. An arts
and crafts competition was also held in the Art Room. Many students participated in this competition.
Handicrafts made from local materials with the most interesting and innovative designs were selected
and put on display.
We had a lot of fun and it was educational too. The spirit of Merdeka was definitely in the air.

When he was well, he returned to school, but he was no longer the quiet Zahid he had

Every few minutes, one of Mr. Jamal’s pupils would cry out, in despair, “Teacher, Zahid
won’t let me do my work”, “Teacher, Zahid pulled my hair”, “Teacher, Zahid smeared ink on my
nose”, “Teacher, Zahid hit me”, “Teacher, Zahid this…Zahid that…”
Once or twice Mr. Jamal warned him, “Zahid, stay in your seat,” and then tried to
ignore him. But after having his ears pounded by dozens of complaints, Mr. Jamal became angry and
instructed Zahid to come up to his desk.
“Zahid, you’ve turned into a little monster!”
In reply Zahid merely lifted his eyebrows and gazed off into space. He was really putting

Based on the short story ‘One is One and All Alone’ that you have learnt and the synopsis of the short stories
below, explain the difference between you and the character in the short story.
‘One is One and All Alone’ is set in 2045. Trish is an 11-year old girl who is the only child on a spaceship
on a spaceship to Trion. Her father is the Executive Officer of the spaceship. Her mother is in Trion helping to
set up a space station. Trish will meet her mother in mid January 2047.
After three months in the spaceship, Trish feels lonely and bored because she does not have any real
friends. She only has her intelligent computer: the VoicePrinter(VP) which keeps Trish entertained with its
ability to perform many functions.
Through VP, Trish learns about clones and the cloning process. Trish is fascinated by the idea and soon
decides to create a clone to keep her company in the spaceship’s Biolab without her father’s knowledge. She
names her new identical twin ‘Clo’, short form of Clone. Initially, Clo becomes Trish’s perfect friend and
companion. They have fun playing and sharing their time together.
However, after a while, Trish becomes irritated with Clo because Clo behaves and thinks like her. Soon,
Trish and Clo start to argue and disagree with each other over unimportant matters – Clo’s habit of picking
bits of skin around a fingernail, Clo repeats whatever Trish said exactly the same time, Clo wearing the same
clothes or telling the same joke. The last straw happens one night when Clo starts referring to Trish’s mother
as her mother. This really upsets Trish because she feels her privacy is being invaded. The next day, Trish
confides in VP that she does not like being ‘swarmed, invaded and taken over’ by Clo. At that instant, she
decides to dispose Clo forever through the ‘DISPOSAL’ hatch near her cabin.
The story ends with a twist because it is Clo who disposed Trish, not, Trish who disposed Clo. This
happens because Trish forgets that Clo knows what Trish thinks, so Clo knew about Trish’s plan. Clo then
assumes Trish’s Identity and Trish’s dad is not aware of the change at all. Clo then enjoys being one and all
alone and her new life as Trish in the spaceship.

Sample Answer
There are some similarities and differences between me and the character Trish in the short story
‘One is One and All Alone. I think Trish and I have a similarity in which we are both resourceful. Trish is
resourceful because to help overcome her boredom in the spaceship, she created a clone of herself after
learning about cloning from VoicePrinter. She did it on her own in the Biolab without anyone’s help. As for
me, when I have problems or obstacles in my life, I would find ways to find solutions on my own. I try to be
resourceful because I know I have to depend on myself in whatever I do.
However, the difference between Trish and I are firstly, I am not so hasty in making my decision,
unlike Trish. Before I make any decision, I will think long and hard about the consequences and the effects of
my decision because they affect my life. As for Trish, she made a hasty decision in creating Clo after she
learnt about cloning and because of her loneliness. She should have thought of the consequences and the
effects before she made any decision.
Another difference is Trish is not grateful with what she had, while I try to be thankful with what I
have. Trish is not grateful that she had a father who still made time for her even though he was busy because
he was the Executive Officer of the spaceship. Trish is not grateful that she had Clo as a friend because Trish
decided to get rid of Clo. I am not like Trish because I appreciate what I have and I try not to ask for things
that are not within my reach.

Sample answer:
The differences between the life of the grandparents and I are many. Firstly, we live without many sacrifices.
We use better mode of transportation to move from one place to another. But, the grandparents didn’t have
to face the air pollution that we are facing at the moment. Secondly, there are also many hospitals available
now to save one’s life. However, then, people can only pray or wait for him to recover.
The similarities between the grandchild and I are we cannot live without modern inventions
such as mobile phones and computers. We too are now facing the polluted environment. We need the
modern invention because we are used to having them. Probably without it we will suffer and do not enjoy
our life. In short, modern inventions are beneficial but are indirectly giving us problems because their
production and use cause environmental problem, for example, the air conditioner.

An Act of Kindness
An old lady was walking along the road. She was moving slowly as her right leg was painful
and she limped with the help of a cane. Suddenly, she slipped and fell. There was an excruciating pain
as her ankle broke. She moaned in pain. Many people passed by without even looking at her. They
were unwilling to help.
A young motorcyclist was passing by saw the old lady sitting on the roadside. He was
concerned and stopped to help the lady. He hailed a taxi. But, the taxi did not stop. The driver
pretended he had not seen the man waving down. A policeman who was on patrol came to see what
was wrong. He was helpful. He stopped a car that was driven by a young lady.
Three kind gentlemen carried out the old lady into the car. At the hospital the young lady
phoned to inform the old lady’s family. The family was grateful to the good Samaritans who had
helped their mother. They wrote to the newspaper to thank the motorcyclist, the lady driver, the
policeman and the three men. They did their duty as all good citizens should.
